Pharo 6.0 and 6.1 64 bit freeze on MacMini

Hi, I reverted to 5.0 because Pharo 6.0 and 6.1 64 bit hangs on my Mac Mini with UDH 4K screen (may that has to do with?) with its maiden image (at first start after download when: I resize or go to full screen. Maybe VM problem? my mac Mini metrics: Hardware Overview: Model Name: Mac mini Model Identifier: Macmini6,2 Processor Name: Intel Core i7 Processor Speed: 2,6 GHz Number of Processors: 1 Total Number of Cores: 4 L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB L3 Cache: 6 MB Memory: 4 GB Boot ROM Version: MM61.0106.B1F SMC Version (system): 2.8f0 maybe this problem was already reported, but could find it. Hi Pablo, At work I managed to remote control Internet Explorer with Excel VBA like this... [1] http://www.automateexcel.com/vba/automate-internet-explorer and went looking for how similar might be achieved from Pharo. IIUC I discovered this would be done via Microsoft's Component Object Model, and then I bumped into your repo... [2] https://github.com/tesonep/pharo-com Could you advise the status and your plans for this? Since I see its only a few months old I've probably stumbled onto it prematurely, but I see no documentation or tests to discover how to use it. So I'll curious whether it makes something like [1] possible? And could you show how that would be done? cheers -ben P.S. For context, at work I automated IE since the intranet document management system (OpenText) does authentication via a javascript function in the browser, which doesn't compute with Microsoft's MSXML.DOMDocument component. So I use IE to do the authentication and grab the raw XML from IE to then stuff it into MSXML.DOMDocument from which I pull the data I need. But I'd love to do it with Pharo instead (if I can get IT to white list it) cheers -ben

Pharo 6 snap package

Hi Everyone, I've updated the Pharo 6 snap package for Ubuntu. The major advantages of using the snap package are: - No need to install all the 32 bit dependencies on a 64 bit system, they're all contained and isolated within the snap package. - Automagically distinguish between 32 bit and 64 bit images and run the appropriate VM (as with the ZeroConf package, the 64 bit VM still needs more testing). To get Pharo up and running on Ubuntu 16.04 or later: # Install Pharo $ sudo snap install --candidate pharo --classic # If your system isn't configured for threaded heartbeat: $ sudo pharo.config # Download the latest Pharo 6 image $ pharo.getimage # Go... $ pharo.ui Pharo.image # or: $ pharo Pharo.image eval 4+3 To get a list of available commands: $ snap info pharo If you're on Debian or Ubuntu 14.04 you'll need to install snapd, see https://snapcraft.io/docs/core/install The VM is the threaded heartbeat, dated 201705310241. The installation flags are: --candidate - The edge and beta channels are for development versions. It progresses to candidate and then stable. --classic - Snap packages are normally sandboxed for security reasons. Since Pharo is a development environment in which we want to be able to run any executable, or load any library, it is installed with access to the entire system (as the running user). Why use snap packages? - They include all dependencies. In particular, for the 32 bit versions, this means that it isn't necessary to install all the 32 bit architecture and associated dependencies. - Including dependencies means that there shouldn't be any problems with incompatible library versions when upgrading. Why not use snap packages? - It's a relatively new technology, with a number of rough edges. - There may still be issues with its sandboxing that I haven't discovered yet. - Because the package uses classic confinement, it isn't cross-distribution in practice (unfortunately). Please let me know of any other advantages or disadvantages you think should be listed here. Porting Transducers to Pharo

Hi, I am the developer of the library 'Transducers' for VisualWorks. It was formerly known as 'Reducers', but this name was a poor choice. I'd like to port it to Pharo, if there is any interest on your side. I hope to learn more about Pharo in this process, since I am mainly a VW guy. And most likely, I will come up with a bunch of questions. :-) Meanwhile, I'll cross-post the introduction from VWnc below. I'd be very happy to hear your optinions, questions and I hope we can start a fruitful discussion - even if there is not Pharo port yet. Best, Steffen Transducers are building blocks that encapsulate how to process elements of a data sequence independently of the underlying input and output source. # Overview ## Encapsulate Implementations of enumeration methods, such as #collect:, have the logic how to process a single element in common. However, that logic is reimplemented each and every time. Transducers make it explicit and facilitate re-use and coherent behavior. For example: - #collect: requires mapping: (aBlock1 map) - #select: requires filtering: (aBlock2 filter) ## Compose In practice, algorithms often require multiple processing steps, e.g., mapping only a filtered set of elements. Transducers are inherently composable, and hereby, allow to make the combination of steps explicit. Since transducers do not build intermediate collections, their composition is memory-efficient. For example: - (aBlock1 filter) * (aBlock2 map) "(1.) filter and (2.) map elements" ## Re-Use Transducers are decoupled from the input and output sources, and hence, they can be reused in different contexts. For example: - enumeration of collections - processing of streams - communicating via channels # Usage by Example We build a coin flipping experiment and count the occurrence of heads and tails. First, we associate random numbers with the sides of a coin. scale := [:x | (x * 2 + 1) floor] map. sides := #(heads tails) replace. Scale is a transducer that maps numbers x between 0 and 1 to 1 and 2. Sides is a transducer that replaces the numbers with heads an tails by lookup in an array. Next, we choose a number of samples. count := 1000 take. Count is a transducer that takes 1000 elements from a source. We keep track of the occurrences of heads an tails using a bag. collect := [:bag :c | bag add: c; yourself]. Collect is binary block (reducing function) that collects events in a bag. We assemble the experiment by transforming the block using the transducers. experiment := (scale * sides * count) transform: collect. From left to right we see the steps involved: scale, sides, count and collect. Transforming assembles these steps into a binary block (reducing function) we can use to run the experiment. samples := Random new reduce: experiment init: Bag new. Here, we use #reduce:init:, which is mostly similar to #inject:into:. To execute a transformation and a reduction together, we can use #transduce:reduce:init:. samples := Random new transduce: scale * sides * count reduce: collect init: Bag new. We can also express the experiment as data-flow using #<~. This enables us to build objects that can be re-used in other experiments. coin := sides <~ scale <~ Random new. flip := Bag <~ count. Coin is an eduction, i.e., it binds transducers to a source and understands #reduce:init: among others. Flip is a transformed reduction, i.e., it binds transducers to a reducing function and an initial value. By sending #<~, we draw further samples from flipping the coin. samples := flip <~ coin. This yields a new Bag with another 1000 samples. # Basic Concepts ## Reducing Functions A reducing function represents a single step in processing a data sequence. It takes an accumulated result and a value, and returns a new accumulated result. For example: collect := [:col :e | col add: e; yourself]. sum := #+. A reducing function can also be ternary, i.e., it takes an accumulated result, a key and a value. For example: collect := [:dic :k :v | dict at: k put: v; yourself]. Reducing functions may be equipped with an optional completing action. After finishing processing, it is invoked exactly once, e.g., to free resources. stream := [:str :e | str nextPut: each; yourself] completing: #close. absSum := #+ completing: #abs A reducing function can end processing early by signaling Reduced with a result. This mechanism also enables the treatment of infinite sources. nonNil := [:res :e | e ifNil: [Reduced signalWith: res] ifFalse: [res]]. The primary approach to process a data sequence is the reducing protocol with the messages #reduce:init: and #transduce:reduce:init: if transducers are involved. The behavior is similar to #inject:into: but in addition it takes care of: - handling binary and ternary reducing functions, - invoking the completing action after finishing, and - stopping the reduction if Reduced is signaled. The message #transduce:reduce:init: just combines the transformation and the reducing step. However, as reducing functions are step-wise in nature, an application may choose other means to process its data. ## Reducibles A data source is called reducible if it implements the reducing protocol. Default implementations are provided for collections and streams. Additionally, blocks without an argument are reducible, too. This allows to adapt to custom data sources without additional effort. For example: "XStreams adaptor" xstream := filename reading. reducible := [[xstream get] on: Incomplete do: [Reduced signal]]. "natural numbers" n := 0. reducible := [n := n+1]. ## Transducers A transducer is an object that transforms a reducing function into another. Transducers encapsulate common steps in processing data sequences, such as map, filter, concatenate, and flatten. A transducer transforms a reducing function into another via #transform: in order to add those steps. They can be composed using #* which yields a new transducer that does both transformations. Most transducers require an argument, typically blocks, symbols or numbers: square := Map function: #squared. take := Take number: 1000. To facilitate compact notation, the argument types implement corresponding methods: squareAndTake := #squared map * 1000 take. Transducers requiring no argument are singletons and can be accessed by their class name. flattenAndDedupe := Flatten * Dedupe. # Advanced Concepts ## Data flows Processing a sequence of data can often be regarded as a data flow. The operator #<~ allows define a flow from a data source through processing steps to a drain. For example: squares := Set <~ 1000 take <~ #squared map <~ (1 to: 1000). fileOut writeStream <~ #isSeparator filter <~ fileIn readStream. In both examples #<~ is only used to set up the data flow using reducing functions and transducers. In contrast to streams, transducers are completely independent from input and output sources. Hence, we have a clear separation of reading data, writing data and processing elements. - Sources know how to iterate over data with a reducing function, e.g., via #reduce:init:. - Drains know how to collect data using a reducing function. - Transducers know how to process single elements. ## Reductions A reduction binds an initial value or a block yielding an initial value to a reducing function. The idea is to define a ready-to-use process that can be applied in different contexts. Reducibles handle reductions via #reduce: and #transduce:reduce: For example: sum := #+ init: 0. sum1 := #(1 1 1) reduce: sum. sum2 := (1 to: 1000) transduce: #odd filter reduce: sum. asSet := [:set :e | set add: e; yourself] initializer: [Set new]. set1 := #(1 1 1) reduce: asSet. set2 := #(1 to: 1000) transduce: #odd filter reduce: asSet. By combining a transducer with a reduction, a process can be further modified. sumOdds := sum <~ #odd filter setOdds := asSet <~ #odd filter ## Eductions An eduction combines a reducible data sources with a transducer. The idea is to define a transformed (virtual) data source that needs not to be stored in memory. odds1 := #odd filter <~ #(1 2 3) readStream. odds2 := #odd filter <~ (1 to 1000). Depending on the underlying source, eductions can be processed once (streams, e.g., odds1) or multiple times (collections, e.g., odds2). Since no intermediate data is stored, transducers actions are lazy, i.e., they are invoked each time the eduction is processed. # Origins Transducers is based on the same-named Clojure library and its ideas. I loved the idea when I saw it for the first time at Lugano (presentation of Leandro Caniglia). I encourage everybody to read it. Now does anybody implemented in Pharo the SUnit extension? Usability issues with Calypso

I have been keen to use Calypso (I love the way it shows inherited methods) as my browser but I am finding some usability issues. It may be just me but some things I find off-putting. I don't really like the way that adding a new class is done by a new tab that appears now and then in the editing area. To my mind the Nautilus way of launching a dialog to create a class seems more natural - and opens the way in future for a class creation wizard - something that can't be done in a code window. If we have to do it in a code tab then it would be better if the tab remained there all the time - I don't like the way it appears and disappears. It takes a while to learn what to click to do this. Also, all class creation presumes a subclass of Object in Calypso. i miss the ability in Nautilus to select a class and immediately create a subclass of it. Am I missing something here? Is there a way? On the topic of my ignorance - what is a /project /in Calypso? How do you create one? And what does realize do? Also I think that the pop up menus could be subdivided into categories rather than present all the options in an unbroken list. And the order of options seems odd. To my mind/ senders /and /implementers /are two menu options that should always go together - not be separated by/ rename/ and /move to class side/ et cetera. Hi again, this is my last question and the more general one of the day :-) Iâm looking for way of representing and executing simple "business processes" in Pharo and a way of declaring domain ontologies/taxonomies. I didnât find any lib around this subjects except some projects in other smalltalk dialects. I just wander if somebody has done some work in these field. Iâm also interested in (KISS) design discussions around these topics, hence this email. I donât want to do a full fledged business process middleware. I would need : - a way to represent simple business processes (succession of activities with logic gates (and/or/xor) => I might be able to do that by myself). - a way to execute these processes (routines) in a semi-aotumatic manner => This looks more difficult to do to me. => my aim is to execute recurrent routines (my routines) with the help of a Pharo application For such a system, I also need a way to categorize information context. Again, I donât think I need a full fledged ontology implementation like Description Logic (or whatever). I think Iâll be happy with information tagging according to a predefined taxonomy. Instead of flat tags, Iâd like them to implement some sort of multiple inheritance. For instance, I may need a tag #soccer that "inherit" #sport. Any information regarding taxonomy tagging in Pharo ? X11 options on Ubuntu VM / Athens rendering problems

I'm running a fullscreen Pharo application on Ubuntu and I've noticed that Athens rendering gets way worse (maybe 10 updates per second) when I switch to fullscreen mode from inside Pharo. Ideally, I'd love for that to be fixed. In lieu of that, it would be cool if I could just maximize Pharo to the size of the screen to achieve good performance. Two things stop that: the Unity application bar and the title-bar. For the former, I can configure Unity to hide it. I noticed a '-notitle' X11 option when I execute pharo -help. I've tried using these X11 options and neither -notitle or -fullscreen seem to have any effect. Here's the command I run: ./bin/pharo --encoding utf8 -vm-display-X11 -fullscreen PATH_TO_IMAGE & Pharo starts fine but neither option seems to have any effect. I've also tried this in GNOME, thinking that Unity was the problem. Again, no effect. Any suggestions? Jeff

Exchanging information between 2 pharo applications (2 images running on two different computers)

Hi all, I want to connect two applications (1 by image, each one on a different computer) so as as to exchange information (data) between them. So my question is about the best (smalltalk) practices to connect two app/image and exchange data. I imagine either with a direct connection through a network (TCP Socket, Web socket, pure HTTP with Zinc) and/or with a serial connection. At first, without any Â« security Â». But later, information exchanges will be encrypted. Iâve seen some information on how to use SerialPort, or even FileStream. I could do it (or at least simulate it with HTTP). What are the other options ? Socket ? Do we have P2P libs (I couldnât find) with eventually discovery features ? Any comment / suggestion / pointers are greatly welcome. TIA. CÃ©drick

So, now, if you load the development version of Pillar: Gofer new smalltalkhubUser: 'Pier' project: 'Pillar'; configuration; loadDevelopment. You will have an extra presentation when inspecting a .pillar file: The new thing here is that the highlighter is based on the Pillar PetitParser, and it is extensible for highlighting more parts if needed. The highlighting also can support actions. For example, the picture above shows the file to the right after clicking on the reference. Please take a look and let me know what you think. including Pillar in Pharo image by default

Hi, I would like to propose including Pillar in the Pharo image by default. My reasoning: Since we are moving to git, and most people will use github, gitlab, and the likes, it is expected to include a README.md file (or possibly more extensive documentation) alongside the code. Which means that people will (and are) writing the README mostly by hand, which of course is problematic, as e.g. code snippets can get deprecated, screenshots become outdated, etc. As Pillar tries to address these problems, it would make sense to me to include Pillar in the image by default, as anyone using git (which eventually should be everyone) will most likely benefit from writing their documentation in Pillar. Similarly using Pillar would open an avenue to provide the documentation in-image, e.g. one exporter for html/markdown, and another one for Pharo's Help system. I could, of course, install Pillar every time, but considering thats extra effort and in the extra time I can fix the issues by hand, I don't have such an incentive to use Pillar for this. Questions & Problems: I don't know by how much would pillar increase the image size. Perhaps there could be (a) "lightweight Pillar" (that would include just pillar & markdown exporter), or (b) we would have different images for different uses. By different images I mean something along the lines of a) developer image - meant to be directly used by developers to create their software b) production image - as a foundation for running systems / users Does this make sense? Hi, I would like to connect fingerprint reader to pharo - so far I am able to use C library to connect to it using UFFI, however the problem is that I can wait for fingerprint indefinitely ( blocking call to library) or register call-back for moment when fingerprint is available. The registration function returns immediately, so it is clear that the callback will be called from another thread. Is such situation supported by UFFI ? Thanks for any tip, Jan

So thank you guys for keeping this wonderful project running. Unfortunately, it is not easy to always point out why Smalltalk should be employed as "main development language" in a team or for a project. In the last discussion of this sort I was confronted with the question "where are we going to get new smalltalk developers if our startup grows or if you go?". Well, I had no good answer to that. I disabled vatId authorization in version 3, located in SessionOperations>>processIWant | SessionOperations>>processIAm:. I was asked to disseminate my news to Pharo Users, hello there. I was asked to describe ParrotTalk well, provide use cases and adopters of its use. Alright, I will give an attempt. ParrotTalk is an encrypted connection framework. Currently allowing anonymous 2048-bit key negotiation to establish user-provided encryption cipher and user-provided encoding and decoding, both through a provided SessionAgentMap to a starting SessionAgent server. Please look in the test case ThunkHelloWorldTest for building these maps and running a connection iwth data passing after encryption is established. There is a 4-way negotiation, from ProtocolOffered/Accepted to Go/GoToo. In using RSA 2048 signature validation and DH 2048 primes to establish the key used within the selected Cipher. The Cipher and Encoder are selected by name through the negotiation protocol. Currently three Ciphers are selectable, AESede, DESede, and DES. There are two encoders tested, asn1der, and Bytes. This protocol is described here, in this document. https://github.com/ZiroZimbarra/callistohouse/blob/master/docs/ParrotTalkFr… For as to use cases, this encrypted connection has no third party, man-in-the-middle situation by not using Certificates. As such, this is a tight implementation of NSA-proof encryption without explicit authorization beyond knowledge of a host:port. The use cases involve any communication desired to be encrypted with such high encryption. The support will last my lifetime, so we have a settled solution, here in the third version, provided here. It requires version 111 of Cryptography, as a prerequisite. My latest efforts with hubbub are to bring STON as the Layer 6 encoding. I never run these tests until I get a better handle of serialization. Currently, do to a shift in progress to STON, the serialization tests fail, just the way we like it. Fix the tests then the system starts to work right. The shift away from vatId authorization should not adversely affect hubbub, we hope! Hi Holger, thanks for mentioning the Software Exploration Tool Sourcetrail. I use it when I develop in C, it is now free for non commercial using. I already contactedÂ Eberhard GrÃ¤ther to discuss using Sourcetrail for other languages than C, C++ and Java. But this will probably at best take some time. So I am still using the Open Source Software Exploration Tool Moose2Model (www.moose2model.org) I developed. I use it for Smalltalk and SAP ABAP. It can be used in a similar way to Sourcetrail, but gives also the option to build commented and customized maps that can be stored and updated with new coding versions. Sourcetrail on the other hand gives much more details on the analyzed coding. Hi, I would like a choropleth map of Colombian departments [1]. The first approach would be to use Territorial, but loading it is not working on Pharo 6.1 (used on Manjaro Linux): It doesn't appears in the Catalog, Gopher load gives me: "XMLFileException: File does does not exist: /home/offray/Programas/Pharo/6.1a/Dev24/territorial_files/fao/fao_country_names.xml" and loading Monticello bleeding edge gives me "FileDoesNotExist: File @ /home/offray/Programas/Pharo/6.1a/Dev24/territorial_files/opengeocode/wc-ASCII.csv". Hi, I had to find out how to automatically deploy the backend written in Pharo, and so far it uses docker-compose stop to stop the instance (and later docker-compose up -d to get everything up again). I noticed the stop phase takes a while and ends with status code 137. I presume it ended forcefully and not gracefully. What is the idiomatic way to wait on SIGTERM and close the process gracefully? I've just downloaded Pharo 6.1 from pharo.org, unzipped it and started. And i've got an error: "UTF8InvalidText: Invalid utf8 input detected" Whether i save image or not, every time i start it i get the same error. System: win 7 professional x64 on 6-core Athlon Phenom. Locale: russian (cyrillic). Can i fix it by myself or i should forget about 6.1 until global bugfix? Vikenti Potapov

Failure with ZdcPluginSSLSession on latest Pharo 32 bit/Win

Hi Pharo 32 bit/Win users, I'm on the latest stock Pharo 32 bit/Win downloaded from http://files.pharo.org/platform/Pharo6.1-win.zip which contains the latest 60518 image. When evaluating Metacello new smalltalkhubUser: 'Moose' project: 'GToolkit'; configuration: 'GToolkit'; version: #development; load. I get an exception roughly stating: PrimitiveFailed: primitive #primitiveSSLCreate in ZdcPluginSSLSession failed I cross-checked the presence of all the .dlls in the Pharo6.1 folder, they are all there, including SqueakSSL and ssleay32. Anybody experiencing similar problems? Any idea on how to overcome it or on how to dive deeper? Greetings Raffaello

What is convention on linux systems is that if the process is sent a signal then the signal number is added to 128. Â Therefore 137 is SIGKILL (kill -9). Â SIGTERM is 143, SIGABRT is 134, SIGSEGV is 139, and so on. Â I've not seen an exception to this but there could be. Hi all, I've put up the _beginnings_ of a wrapper for OpenSSL on STH: Metacello new baseline: 'OpenSSL'; smalltalkhubUser: 'PierceNg' project: 'OpenSSL-Pharo'; load. Verified on Pharo 6 32- and 64-bit. My near term goal is to wrap enough libcrypto functionality to implement the client-side of Let's Encrypt. I meant to put it up on GH, for the ease of forking and PRs, but I couldn't get Iceberg to work, and gitfiletree also failed to load, so STH it is. Â¯\_(ã)_/Â¯ Collaboration welcome. Pierce

[ANN] Iceberg 0.6.2 backported to Pharo 6.1

Hi, I backported lastest Iceberg version to Pharo 6.1 to allow people to benefit for latest changes. This version has an important amount of tweak and fixes, but most important is the inclusion of tonel file format (this is default for Pharo 7.0, optional for Pharo 6.1) and introduces a file-per-class format. The advantages of this format has everything to do with the speed of access (is easier to reconstruct a package like) and the space on disk (methods are usually small but minimum space in disk is usually 4k so we waste a lot of space). Is also a better format for SSD disks. To backport Iceberg 0.6.2 I also needed to backport latest version of Metacello, so Pharo 6.1 and Pharo7+ users now also have the latest version of it available :) cheers! Esteban

Read-only images / how to deploy new image as fast as possible?

Hi, I came to the phase where I actually deploy the small backend written in Pharo, and I wonder about two things: 1. Is it possible to make .image / .changes read-only? Will Pharo just work (not writing the image, but that is not needed, all data are in sqlite file)? 2. How to "switch" images as fast as possible? I presume there is no way to tell vm to "stop doing this and reload different image" or something like that? I need to stop the runninng one and then start the new one? Or is it possible to "swap" the read-only image for new one and tell VM to reload (just wanting to minimize the off-time). Thanks, Herby

I confuse easily, as you say freeipa works wonderfully well, then point out sun support to the api is hidden and itâs tricky to use. Do you mean Hadoopâs use is iffy? If freeipa works wonderfully can we find the right api and sequence of calls, building our own model in image side? Then that model we compute on and it makes the right calls. Modeling is our strength, I have always thought. What is achievable? [GT] moldable tools for non-developers

Hi all! There is this strong movement within Pharo now, that allows developers to expand the individual development process with the help of moldable dev tools based on GlamourToolkit (GT). This allows for a much more effective communication between stakeholders and developers resulting in a more cost effective development. While the ambitions behind GT seem to be developer centric, I wonder if there is also research or development done to support non-developer pharo users. Are there projects that try to integrate/interface "modeling" into/with GT? (e.g. likeÂ STELLA [1]) I am also wondering if aspect oriented programming could help closing the full cycle of an adaptive development/management process. Anybody researching on something like this? Cryptography and hashing in Pharo

Hi again, Concerning cryptography in Pharo, there are to my knowledge : => a package developed in squeak [1] that was I think ported/forked for Pharo. I cannot find the Pharo version => a binding to the sodium library (NaCl) [2] With one would you recommend ? Maybe another option ? Concerning hashing (Iâd like to hash information content a bit like this is done in ifs with their multihash lib [3]) => I found a keccak implication with I think would do the [4]. Any feedback ? I am using a DictionaryMapping in my code, and I wanted to use #includesKey: in #where: clause (something akin each tools includesKey: aToolId ) to select only rows for which DictionaryMapping uses certain key. It failed with the error in the lines of "#tools does not resolve to field". I had to come up with each tools anySatisfy: [ :tool | tool id = aToolId ] Is it the bug / feature / problem in my approach? If bug, is it planned to add #includesKey: translation to DictionaryMapping? Thanks, Herby

With DictionaryMapping, you map a set of (key, value) pairs into appropriate fields in a table. In essence, it does not differ at all to mapping any other collection containing objects with fields (actually, from what I understood, it does internal tricks to do just that - create internal "class mapping" for an association of that particular dictionary mapping). In case of primitive value dictionaries, it even _is_ the same: key is mapped to one field, value is mapped to different field. If I want to create subquery using value, I can freely use things like #anySatisfy: to filter on that value (which I did in my case, but I come to that later). Since Dictionary enumerates values in do:, select:, collect: (and anySatisfy:), writing each tools anySatisfy: [...] is the same as writing each tools values anySatisfy: [...] but what if I wanted to write each tools keys anySatisfy: [...] ? I cannot, Glorp fails on 'keys' (I tried to use `keys includes:` instead of `includesKey:`, to no avail). So what I want to point here is, that in DictionaryMapping I map keys and values to different fields in table (values can be complex, in which keys they are mapped to more fields, but that is not important distinction here), but Glorp only allows me to use values (and only implicitly) in where clauses; I have no way to use keys at all there. So I assert here that "resolving that to SQL would be more complex" is not true. Key is mapped the same way value is; if I can use where clause that uses value in certain way, I should be able to use key as well - SQL generating from one or the other have same level of difficulty (in fact, I think key is easier, as you do not actually need to join the foreign table); the generated SQL could be something like SELECT * FROM AGENT a WHERE a.tool_id = <toolId asDbValue> The fact that I found a each tools anySatisfy: [ :tool | tool id = aToolId ] is in fact only because non-primitive mappings are processed differently in DictionaryMapping, a non-primitive values are _required_ to have a field defined (not in table, that is understandable, I need to be able to make a join, but in descriptor) a mapping that contains the key. So in essence, that could be represented as SELECT * FROM AGENT a WHERE a.tool_id IN (SELECT * FROM TOOL t WHERE t.agent_id = a.id AND t.id = a.tool_id AND t.id = <aToolId asDbValue>) which is basically same as above, as actually, "a.tool_id = <aToolId asDbValue>" is executed here as well (plus checking that such dictionary actually exists at all; maybe that should be present in previous case as well, but Glorp can generate the join, that's not the question here). It is actually interesting question what SQL Glorp actually generated for "TgAgent readOneOf: [:a|a tools anySatisfy: [:t|t id = toolId]]". Point here is: 1. Why do I need to work it around via [:tool | tool id = aToolId] when I am only interested on "which tools the agent uses" (in fact, give me all agents using this tool). 2. Should this be key -> primitive value mapping, I have simple _no way_ to ask the equivalent of #includesKey: at all (as the value is, for example, a String or an Integer, so no `tool id` is available). > bug. I've been able to load it in Pharo 5, but it get an error when select the "City" tag in GTInspector. It seems that NBOpenGL does not work in Linux. Do you know any way to make it work in Linux? This is a great question, Abdelghani. It comes down to the meaning of the phrase "everything is an object". When you wrote "currentBloc value", that caused the block *[ 1 to:50 do: [:index |Transcript show: index. 100 milliSeconds asDelay wait]. Transcript cr. 1000 milliSeconds asDelay wait ]* to evaluate. The fact that you hold a reference to that block elsewhere and change what object is referenced at some point does not change the fact that the block itself is executing. Until your code executes *currentBloc value* again, it won't start the new block executing. Imagine if I were to hand you a loaf of bread and tell you to feed it to the dog. If I were then to hand you another loaf of bread, the dog would continue eating the first loaf. We never told the dog to do anything else. Multi-core Software Concurrency

With todayâs powerful multi-core processors, the demand for efficient software concurrency is high. We find strong support for such concurrency in the latest crop of âmodernâ languages such as Clojure, Elixir, Go, Haskell, and Scala. Whenever I present Smalltalk (Pharo) as a great language option, inevitably someone asks me about multi-core software concurrency. I have no response for them. Do I just say that if you need concurrency, Pharo is the wrong choice? After all, no programming language can be good at everything. You must always choose the right tool for the job. Do I say that doing concurrency right is very, very tough, even for the most experienced of developers? Let's focus on Pharo's strengths, instead. Sounds like an excuse. I donât know... we maintained SeasideTesting at http://smalltalkhub.com/#!/~Seaside/SeasideTesting/ until we developed Parasol because it just covers some bare-bones html page testing. Forget about JavaScript and css influence on your tests in seaside testing. I think we prefer a slower but accurate testing proces, using Parasol. So I will do it manually but I found sad that ZTimestampFormat cannot handle just handling days. I could then pass also a date and it would not ask for nanoseconds. Stef

If you have a String (or a Symbol), and you sent it the message #asSet, what do you expect to get as an answer? A set of characters, one would think. But do you care what class is used to implement that set of characters? -- One argument says that it should be a Set, because thatâs what asSet answers when it is sent to other collections. Itâs conceivable that you might initially populate the set with Characters, but then add other kinds of object. -- Another argument says that it should be a CharacterSet (or a WideCharacterSet), because you know that the receiver contains characters. The expression 'abcd' asSet is a convenient way to create a CharacterSet with: $a with: $b with: $c with: $d -- A third argument says that you shouldnât care. If you really want a specific class, then you should use (aString as: Set) rather than aString asSet. Right now, in Pharo 7, there is a test in TConvertAsSetForMultiplinessTest that insists that the class of the result of asSet is actually Set. This test is already overridden once, in IdentityBagTest, because the result of sending asSet to an IdentityBag is not a Set â itâs an IdentitySet. So, indeed, there is already a precedent for asSet returning a set object that is not an instance of Set. I think that the test is bad, and should be changed. But this raises the larger question: if you want to know whether or not a collection has set-like behaviour, what is the right way of finding out? (aCollection isKindOf: Set) reads OK, but is actually wrong, because itâs testing the implementation, and not the behaviour. A predicate on all collections (isSet would be the obvious name) would seem to be indicated. And thatâs what the test should be using. (You might ask why CharacterSet and WideCharacterSet are not subclasses of Set. This answer is that subclassing Set implies inheriting a hash table, and the raison dâÃªtre for CharacterSet is that it does not use a hash table.)

Pharo/Win on a HiDPI display

Hi, not sure if this has already been discussed. I'm using Pharo/Win on a HiDPI (aka "retina") display scaled at 200%. Everything shows correctly scaled (widgets, fonts, icons, etc.), except for the cursor, which is not scaled at all in Pharo, so it is rendered half the expected size. Outside Pharo the cursor appears correctly. Is there something configurable in Pharo itself to overcome the tininess of the cursor with respect to the rest of the GUI elements? (BTW, kudos for the otherwise excellent HiDPI support in Pharo. Nice work.) Greetings Raffaello

Of all the responses here, I like this one the best because it's right on the money. In my long career, I've been dropped into many software projects where I had to quickly ramp up with a new programming language. The employer didn't hire me for my language expertise; they hired me for my programming skill and ability to deliver good quality software on time. The programming tool used was a mere technicality, and hardly an obstacle. There is not a software developer alive who can coast through their entire career without ever needing to pick up another programming language. This is simply not an issue except for the most myopic of employers. Hi, i am trying to set the font size of a BlTextElement, and i do not have much success. I use the following code to add the text element, where 'model' is a string. First, if the string is '0.0' then the font size is correct (see screenshot). But, if for example the value is '21.0' then the font size is wrong (see the other screenshot). I don't understand, i've tried variants but it seems to me that this code was the right way to do it. Sometimes, a '9' would be displayed at the correct font size, sometimes not. Hi everyone, I have started a new blog to discuss the "Smalltalk Express" framework. https://smalltalkexpress.quora.com/ Smalltalk Express is web development framework using a Smalltalk interpreter written in the "Go" language. The first blog post provides some details and a video. A few months ago, I built an experimental framework called "Rails Express" which had an interactive interpreter based on Ruby. The feedback that I have received has been fantastic. "Smalltalk Express" uses all the same UI techniques and is designed to be capable of production deployment. I am intending to offer "Smalltalk Express" initially as a service based on Google's App Engine, but I would be happy to hear any ideas of how to market the product. It allows embedded, headless software running on typical raspberry pi class hardware to be developed and debugged in an interactive way. It allows programmers to explore and change running headless embedded programs from their desktop development machine. The next step will be to extend this infrastructure to cover the use case of industrial use: Deployment. We want to build a middle-ware to manage, authenticate and script deployed Pharo embedded installations. When you insert a jpeg from a file, for some reason the file descriptor (stream) is kept open (at least in the Windows end of things). Then, if a second page is to be generated, the following error is shown: 'MessageNotUnderstood: receiver of "reset" is nil PDFJpegElement>>stream: JPEGReadWriter aJPEGReadWriter JPEGReadWriter(ImageReadWriter)>>on: nil Sample code: aPage := PDFPage new. imageStream := FileStream fileNamed: 'lsi-tec.jpg'. aPage add: ((PDFJpegElement fromStream: imageStream) from: 15 mm @ 20 mm; dimension: 40 mm @ 40 mm). imageStream close. Generated report is in annex The only way to recover is to close pharo, start it again. Then the file descriptor (stream) is released and it is possible to go on. Has anyone faced this problem? Hello Pharo Users, I'm wondering about instance variables for support in Redline Smalltalk and want to get my understanding straight. Are instance variables only accessible (without using #instVarNamed:) inside the method with the same name as the instance variable? eg: myInstVar ^ myInstVar. Or can you reference an instance variable from a method that doesn't have the same name ? anotherMethod ^ myInstVar. iceberg - changing non-code files in the same commit as code

Hi, this is maybe a bit advanced use case from Iceberg perspective, but quite basic from git perspective. Use case: In the same commit where code has changed I want to update text file CHANGELOG.md. Right now I need to modify the file after the commit and then amend it (so it is in the same commit), but it would be nice to do everything from within Pharo. Thanks, Peter

Hello. I'm using the Desktop Manager add on in my Pharo 6, but I really dislike the fact that its key shortcuts start with Ctrl-D because it hides the Do-It command. So I looked into the code and changed in the class method DesktopManager >> desktopMenuCommandOn:, to use Ctrl-M instead of Ctrl-D. After saving the new key shortcuts are working now. Nevertheless the old Ctrl-D based are still functional. The question is, how do I disable them? In other words, I do I make the system reset its key short-cuts? Is there a tool where I can see all the active key short-cuts of the system and manage them? Thanks a lot. Hello, IÂ´m using seaside & have some trouble regarding dates (displayed in English). WhatÂ´s the easy way to display dates in other languages? Particularly dateInput shows dates in English format (month, day, year) and months in English.
