Oh, Chris I am just a dumb developer and I don't know much about the tools, I just know it is a pain to get MC 1.5 working. I am cc to Pharo firends with a small recall of the situation, may be they have some tips Chris is working on new beta version of Magma which I am testing with him. As far as I can understand, Chris use Monticello configuration to be able to load in one click several Magma mcz packages. This requires Monticello 1.5, but this ones does not work equally on the different version of Squeak nor with Pharo. Which tools could be suggested to Chris ? [Pharo-project] how to save a package in a repository

Hi all I have a working copy of a package and I would like to be able to save it into another repository. Does any of you know how to do that? I found repo storeVersion: (but I do not know how to get a version from a working copy). May be with an UML diagram I could find my way, but so far after 25 min nothing besides trying in the dark I'm really sad that there is not a single comment on MC. This is exactly what pharo should pay attention to: documentation, simple design, ... stef

With the last Magma beta (41beta3, 41beta4), I have noted a strange problem when I start a Magma server instance. The image got lock up by a semaphore at the initialization phase of the Magma server. The morph interface is locked, I can get control with [Alt]+. See screenshot >From the debugger, clicking Proceed resumes normally the execution, and the Magma server is finally started. This happens with 3.9.1, but not with 3.9, nor last pharo will all update. Is it related to fix applied to 3.9.1 as http://bugs.squeak.org/view.php?id=6588 or http://bugs.squeak.org/view.php?id=6581 I was beliving pharo was based on 3.9.1,so I am curious why Magma server works with it. Damien, You asked (some time ago) for examples, and I just enountered a concrete situation of auto-completion making it (AFAICT) impossible to edit text the way I wanted. Having downloaded a fresh developer image, I am trying to install the Pinesoft enhancements, and tried to comment out some progress blocks - autocompletion insisted on "completing" the quotes for me, and I finally gave up. In fairness, the fonts could be better, so I might be missing a visual clue. For me, I type fast enough that I basically want the machine to do what I ask, and not try to help. You asked :) Please note that the answer to your question, "are the developer images useful?" appears to be yes. Our tastes on settings differ, but as I learn how to make my desired changes, I am finding the RB, Seaside, etc. very useful. Thanks, Bill Wilhelm K. Just to say that my investigation is almost complete. Having completed most of our work on the various Pinesoft Sprints I should have a bit more time for it... Obviously there is some overlap with MVC/Nebraska/ScriptLoader removal (and a bit of UI Enhancements modifications) though. Just a concern, forgiving a quote from Alain's email, "Stephane seems to prefer that I work on Etoy removing". I'm wondering the best way forward with this now. Regards, Gary.

Every now and then someone tries to improve the way to go by introducing new processes. Most of time nobody likes them and they fail :) We have several types of changes that we want to integrate in pharo: ï»¿- enhancements to the platform - fixes for reported defects - fixes from another squeak release (e.g. 3.10) - fixes from other bug databases like mantis The type of an issue you open on google is pretty near to that. Just think about it as a source where the change has its origin. For this purpose I created a Type-Mantis in the tracker to assign to tickets from mantis we like to integrate. It might be a step more to do when opening a ticket but the outcome is that we track a list of things already done. if you look at http://code.google.com/p/pharo/issues/list?can=1&q=label%3AType-Mantis you can see what I mean. I think this way it is easier to track things. What do you think? Norbert

This bug against Networking is longstanding, and has a fix: http://bugs.squeak.org/view.php?id=6768 Should I try to get it into Pharo? Is there a list of Mantis issues that have been folded into Pharo? Is there a process to determine which mantis bugs apply to Pharo? I ask because Pharo is currently, de facto, the only work being done on Squeak core, and I don't see a good reason to really push a separate effort and call it 3.11. I thought once more about this test. I'm reluctant to have this test removed. On the other hand is Adrien right. He states that a lot of test classes are doing calls to methods they created while the test runs. One solution would be to change the test to use perform: to invoke those methods. But that would making tests a bit tedious. So this is not my preferred solution. [Pharo-project] ObjectFinalizerTests understanding problems

Before I recognized that Adrian fixed the ObjectFinalizerTests>>testFinalizationOfEquals I gave it try myself. I came to the same conclusion as Adrian how to fix. But now after knowing how it works I do not know why the test succeeds :) The test uses 1 to: 5 do: [:n | o := Object new. bag add: n. o toFinalizeSend: #remove: to: bag with: n]. 1 to: 5 do: [:n | o := Object new. bag add: n. o toFinalizeSend: #remove: to: bag with: n]. My problem is that toFinalizeSend:to:with adds an Objectfinalizer to the finalizationRegistry of the instance. But Object>>finalizationRegistry "Answer the finalization registry associated with the receiver." ^WeakRegistry default returns a global object which is WeakKeyDictionary. And | d | d := WeakKeyDictionary new. d at: (1 asString copy) put: $a. d at: (1 asString copy) put: $b. d size prints 1. To me that would exchange every entry from the first run by the second run (because the objects are equal). So I would assume that if there does not happen a run of the garbagecollector between the two loops the objects of the first loop should be still contained in the bag. But the test is named finalizationOfEquals so I have to assume: self doesNotUnderstand Can someone explain it to me, please? Norbert

Hi all, asking the unmentionable ;-) Are there any plans for (simple) name spaces in Pharo? Reason I'm asking is that it would make moving code between e.g. VW and Pharo easier IMHO. Michael

Hi all if somebody wants to add a really cool feature to the debugger.... in VW we can see as intermediary variable the results of subsets of expression so we we step thru the execution we do not have to select the expression and print it all the time we can simply see the results in the variable. Hi guys I send to this list the email I sent to the great omnibrowser developer list...... Really cool features but seems to forget the basic. if it takes me more than 5 min to find something may be the interface is BAD. Stef how with the new browser can I get class Variable refs? I ask this question for OB-Shittynamebrowser and OB- shittynamepackagebrowser. Do you expect that a newbie can find his way with browser named like that? this question quite stupid question reveals that the command if there exist are far from readable for a normal programmer. Of course feel free to think that I'm an idiot. When somebody instead of inventing new features will do a real usability analysis? Stef
