Sockets not working under heavy VM load?

Hi, we have some performance issues with Glorp over P3 and, after some investigation, I have a theory that could explain it. And I would like to know your opinion if it is correct. To reproduce this issue, you can try something easy. Just create a process with normal or higher priority that will try to read something from a socket. And, in parallel, do in a separate thread an operation that takes all the processor time for several seconds. ```` [ 5 seconds wait. Time now traceCr. ZnClient new url: 'https://www.google.com'; get. Time now traceCr. ] forkAt: 60. [1000 timesRepeat: [ 10000 factorial ] ] timeToRun ```` (you may try a different safe server address) The processes run in parallel until the time when the first process tries to obtain data from the socket. Then it hangs and waits until finishing of the second process. My theory is that the VM socket plugin is able to receive incoming data from the connection and save it into the buffer. In the meantime, the reading process is waiting on the socket semaphore. But it looks like the plugin is not able to release the semaphore while the VM is actually doing something. It needs to wait until the VM has nothing useful to do, and then it is finally able to release the semaphores so Pharo processes are resumed and can start to read. Is my theory right? hello, this paper : "An Empirical Comparison of Pre-Trained Models of Source Code" https://arxiv.org/pdf/2302.04026.pdf studied "19 recently-developed pre-trained models of source code" I am a complete noob in this domain, but wouldn't it be possible to use one of these to train it on smalltalk code and get an advanced code completion tool from that ? nicolas

[Pharo12] Simplify CompiledMethod trailer: just support fixed sourcePointers

Hi, We did (im Pharo12) a simplification of how method trailers are handled. Below is the class comment of the now Deprecated and empty class CompiledMethodTrailer. The issue https://github.com/pharo-project/pharo/issues/13512 has a list of all the intermediate steps done. ========== CompiledMethodTrailer was removed in Pharo12 It was responsible for encoding and decoding various kinds of compiled method trailer data, but that had many downsides: â¢ variable length trailers forced often called methods like CompiledMethod>>#endPC to instantiate an instance â¢ setting a sourcePointer that required a different length trailer (e.g embedding sources) needed to create a new compiled method and do a become â¢ to avoid that, the compiler supported to use an existing trailer and delegated instance creation of CompiledMethod to it. â¢ using 1 byte for the trailer kind lead to the need use Variable length encoding already for our ~40MB source file for some methods. All in all, the CompiledMethodTrailer added a lot of complexity for nothing. What do we do now? â¢ use use a fixed-length trailer (see #trailerSize) â¢ writing and reading that is not that complex (see #setSourcePointer, #sourcePointer:) Q: I used to hand a trailer to the compiler, what should I do now? The compiler now creates always CompiledMethods with a fixed, but empty trailer. Just use #sourcePointer to set it after. Q: I used to clear the trailer using #copyWithTrailerBytes:, what should I do now? There is now #cearSourcePointer. Just use #copy before if you want a copy. Q: I want to have a non-installed method, but with source code. The compiler now sets a #source property (and setting a source pointer via #sourcePointer: removes it). If you use the compiler, you need to do nothing special anymore! All methods come with source via the property by default.

Hi, Pharo11 us now frozen for a while, it seems we are on a good way to release soon. This is always a good time to clean up the issue tracker. Please check especially the issues you opend https://github.com/pharo-project/pharo/issues Github often fails to close the isssue even though it is correctly set as to be closed in the PR. And often bugs are fixed due to a duplicate issue tracker entry or as part of other work. As we do not timeout issues anymore, we rely on everyone to help to keep this in a somewhat sane stateâ¦ Marcus

Hi, Sometimes it is a bit hard to understand the status of the PRs. e.g. - âI just want to help and review oneâ - Why is my PR not yet merged? There is now a Board with all the PRs: https://github.com/orgs/pharo-project/projects/34 Everyone who is in the âIssue Trackerâ group in the github Pharo-Project can help to keep this up to date. There are some automatisatiins defined (e.g. merging or closing moves to DONE), but new PRs have to be added manually for now and the CI test passing does not change the state. Marcus
