Sockets not working under heavy VM load?

Hi, we have some performance issues with Glorp over P3 and, after some investigation, I have a theory that could explain it. And I would like to know your opinion if it is correct. To reproduce this issue, you can try something easy. Just create a process with normal or higher priority that will try to read something from a socket. And, in parallel, do in a separate thread an operation that takes all the processor time for several seconds. ```` [ 5 seconds wait. Time now traceCr. ZnClient new url: 'https://www.google.com'; get. Time now traceCr. ] forkAt: 60. [1000 timesRepeat: [ 10000 factorial ] ] timeToRun ```` (you may try a different safe server address) The processes run in parallel until the time when the first process tries to obtain data from the socket. Then it hangs and waits until finishing of the second process. My theory is that the VM socket plugin is able to receive incoming data from the connection and save it into the buffer. In the meantime, the reading process is waiting on the socket semaphore. But it looks like the plugin is not able to release the semaphore while the VM is actually doing something. It needs to wait until the VM has nothing useful to do, and then it is finally able to release the semaphores so Pharo processes are resumed and can start to read. Is my theory right? Recommendation for password encryption?

Hi guys. Some time ago I asked about the best way to encrypt a password. Some of the recommendations I got was: 1) Generally for passwords you do not write a decrypt method for security purposes (eg you do not want people to be able to reverse engineer the encrypted password easily) 2) put a little salt 3) There is http://www.squeaksource.com/Cryptography/PasswordHashingFFI 4) I should not decrypt password but instead I should compare both encrypted versions to see if they are equal. My scenario is the following. I need to store database passwords in text files. So I don't want to let them as plain text. And while I understand 4), I think it's a different scenario than mine. I know that some database driver may allow you to directly send the encrypted password. But still...I have another similar scenario in which I have to store a password and then send it (unencrypted)...so I kind of really need a bi-directional encryption. Now..I would try to avoid having an external library + FFI. Any ideas what is the best thing I can do? And how could I solve 1) if I want bidirectional like in my case? [Compiler] Variables in DoIts

Hi, We finally merged a PR form Denis (Sorry for taking too longâ¦) that enables the use of DoitVariable in DoItIn: methods: Denis: #pharo has finally transparent variables in the debugger doIts. No ThisContext readVariable trick And we could even get rid of #DoItIn:, after merging another small cleanup, both methods now is just #DoIt as a selector. How does it work? Denis: It is the power of first class variables. There is DoItVariable fully integrated now which represents variables from different context Marcus: DoitVariable has the original Variable instance and the context (what used to the ThisContext parameter of DoItIn:). It can be read reflectively by sending #read, compiler delegates code generation to the Variables (#emitValue:)

[Compiler API] unifying isScriping / isForScripting / isWorkspace

This is not directly the compiler API, but the API used by tools (e.g. requestors): There where three methods to test if the requestor operates on whole methods or not. - isWorkspace - isScripting - isForScripting This had lead to odd bugs in the past that something that was tested for one requestor failed if used in another context. (For that, we added both #isScripting and #isForScripting for some cases already). This Issue points to a series of PRs that unifies the situation: unify #isScripting and #isForScripting #9921 https://github.com/pharo-project/pharo/issues/9921 Note: it is not really possible to do this backward compatible in a nice way, but the good news is that this is an API used for tools that should not be used normally outside of the development tools themselves. PHEP: Compile-Time Literal Expression Syntax

Hello all, I have submitted a Pharo Enhancement Proposal <https://github.com/pharo-project/pheps/pull/10> for a new compiler/syntax feature, in collaboration with Marcus Denker. This is also serving as a trial run of the PhEP process itself, being the first PhEP not *about* the process. Abstract: This PhEP describes an extension to the compiler that allows arbitrary expressions to be evaluated at compile time, with the results stored in the method's literal frame. This is inspired by and will be compatible with the implementation in Dolphin Smalltalk. I refer to such expressions interchangeably as "compile-time literals", "compile-time expressions", and "optimized expressions". A large portion of the code can be ported directly from Dolphin Smalltalk, and I should be able to complete this part of the process. Marcus said he could help with the integration with OpalCompiler etc., but we can probably break this into several parts (compiler vs. decompiler, other peripheral things) if others are interested. Compiler API: Simplify #interactive

The compiler has a lot of odd features as we wanted to be 100% backward compatible. One of them is the idea of the âinteractiveâ state. -> a compiler compiled with a requestor or without. -> Interactive use needs a requestor - to print error messages - to lookup variables The requestor can implement #interactive to return false. This is used to hook into error handling by implementing a fake requestor. MethodChunkCompilerRequestor is an example of that. But in addition, the compiler added âinteractiveâ as local state of the compilation context: you could make the compiler without a requestor Interactive, or turn off the compiler interactive even though the requestor was interactive. This makes no sense (and I think does not even work). This PR simplifies the idea of #isInteractive: if there is no requestor, we are not interactive. This means we do not need the flag "interactive" on CompilationContext and can simplify. For now we keep the feature that requestors can implement #interactive and return false, to support MethodChunkCompilerRequestor. I think we should simplify that, too, but that is another step. Cheap/free Seaside site hosting (urgent)?

Hello there. Iâve just finished a website which, aside from a simple storage in Mongo/Voyage permanence layer, is otherwise very small and simple. But Seaside Hosting and Pharo Cloud are down, and international transactions are impossible in Digital Ocean. My country doesnât have any of the less complex cloud storages, making it all more difficult. At this point, Iâm willing to pay 17 dollars (max I have now) so that someone sets the image up for me at a DO droplet only once, as the app is technically static. This is urgent because the site is an effort to find a job (as a portfolio), and I donât have any additional money for nothing fancier. If no one can do that, what are the alternatives?
