Recommendation for password encryption?

Hi guys. Some time ago I asked about the best way to encrypt a password. Some of the recommendations I got was: 1) Generally for passwords you do not write a decrypt method for security purposes (eg you do not want people to be able to reverse engineer the encrypted password easily) 2) put a little salt 3) There is http://www.squeaksource.com/Cryptography/PasswordHashingFFI 4) I should not decrypt password but instead I should compare both encrypted versions to see if they are equal. My scenario is the following. I need to store database passwords in text files. So I don't want to let them as plain text. And while I understand 4), I think it's a different scenario than mine. I know that some database driver may allow you to directly send the encrypted password. But still...I have another similar scenario in which I have to store a password and then send it (unencrypted)...so I kind of really need a bi-directional encryption. Now..I would try to avoid having an external library + FFI. Any ideas what is the best thing I can do? And how could I solve 1) if I want bidirectional like in my case? Some test where Spur more slow than Cog

Hi. I found case where Spur more slow than Cog. Not much but. prototype := BorderedMorph new. result := [prototype veryDeepCopy ] benchFor: 2 seconds. In my computer I got: Cog: a BenchmarkResult(16,982 iterations in 2 seconds 1 millisecond. 8,487 per second) Spur: a BenchmarkResult(12,507 iterations in 2 seconds 33 milliseconds. 6,152 per second). Is it expected behavior for such case?

error "please insert disk" (windows vm)

we have the following bug report 16928 <https://pharo.fogbugz.com/f/cases/16928/no-disk-in-the-drive-reply-to-World…> "no disk in the drive" reply to World | Save As (and other places) "On a clean Pharo4.0 #40618 image, on Windows 7 World Menu | Save As brings up a modal alert window, "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive <etc>" On my system, it does this 4 times. I'm assuming that each instance refers to one of the card-reader drives which are attached, but without a card inserted. This is a pain to deal with every single time a File Browser or World | Save As dialog is opened. Could the alerts either be - only raised when that specific drive is requested by a user action or, less preferably - given by a non-modal window, and fading away after a period" I was able to reproduce this error on squeaks and pharos window vm. (insert a usb card reader, with card, wait some time , remove only the card, every access on this drive, for example open a FileList and scroll to the drive letter). The solution I found is to call SetErrorMode( *SEM_FAILCRITICALERRORS)* I would like to propose the following change to sqwin32directory.c wrap the call to FindFirstFileW/FindNextFileW with UINT prevMode = SetErrorMode(SEM_FAILCRITICALERRORS); call FindFirstFileW/FindNextFileW SetErrorMode(prevMode); ... and call this functions in at least dir_lookup() (the other file/directory methods are save). Alternative solution, we could call the SetErrorMode function once at program start but I don't know if there are other "useful" errors message that we don't want to disable. I tested both solution, both seems to work fine. What do you think?

Reacting to multi-selection changes in ListModel

Hi, maybe someone can help me out with this. Iâm working with ListModel that supports multiple selection and has autoDeselect turned off. Now Iâve tried to use #whenSelectionChanged: but it doesnât give any data, #whenMultiSelectionChanged: is not triggered at all, #whenSelectedItemChanged: works as for single selection list. Iâd be very thankful for any help. Uko

moving to Rubric in Glamour

Hi, I moved Glamour to Rubric, deprecated those presentations that use PluggableTextMorph and moved almost all usages of presentations that rely on PluggableTextMorph. These changes are still only in the Moose branch to see if there are any ugly bugs. The changes to the glamour API are the following: - deprecated #smalltalkCode, #pharoPlayground and #rubricText - added #pharoScript If you use #smalltalkCode replace it with either #pharoMethod or #pharoScript If you use #rubricTest replace those usages with #text If you use #pharoPlayground replace those usages with #pharoScript (we changed this as the glamour playground is not the same at the GTPlayground and this was causing some confusion) For this I also renamed GLMPharoPlaygroundPresentation to GLMPharoScriptPresentation and GLMMorphicPharoPlaygroundRenderer to GLMMorphicPharoScriptRenderer. If you are using the latest moose let me know if you run into any problems or have questions. Cheers, Andrei

Smalltalk Hub on Chrome
