Hi Bill, thank you for your message. I guess your are talking about automatic closing of quotes and parenthesis. This can be turned of with the #ecompletionSmartCharacters preference.

Please note that the answer to your question, "are the developer images useful?" appears to be yes. Our tastes on settings differ, but as I learn how to make my desired changes, I am finding the RB, Seaside, etc. very useful.
