Recommendation for password encryption?

Hi guys. Some time ago I asked about the best way to encrypt a password. Some of the recommendations I got was: 1) Generally for passwords you do not write a decrypt method for security purposes (eg you do not want people to be able to reverse engineer the encrypted password easily) 2) put a little salt 3) There is http://www.squeaksource.com/Cryptography/PasswordHashingFFI 4) I should not decrypt password but instead I should compare both encrypted versions to see if they are equal. My scenario is the following. I need to store database passwords in text files. So I don't want to let them as plain text. And while I understand 4), I think it's a different scenario than mine. I know that some database driver may allow you to directly send the encrypted password. But still...I have another similar scenario in which I have to store a password and then send it (unencrypted)...so I kind of really need a bi-directional encryption. Now..I would try to avoid having an external library + FFI. Any ideas what is the best thing I can do? And how could I solve 1) if I want bidirectional like in my case? FFIIntegerTypes inheritance hierarchy

I'm looking through the keyhole at something new to me, so maybe this is off base, but looking at the inheritance hierarchy... FFIIntegerType FFIUint16 FFIUint16 FFIUInt32 FFIInt32 FFIUint64 FFIInt64 FFIUint8 FFIInt8 I'm curious... why the all the Ints inherit from the UInts? Each of those classes has the same two methods #basicHandle:at: and #basicHandle:at:put. So the Int subclasses fully override the superclass methods. So there in no inherited behaviour on the instance side. On the class side, I see #externalTypeSize is inherited by the Ints, but evaluating... FFIIntegerType allSubclasses collect: [ :class | class externalType byteSize -> class externalTypeSize ] produces... 4->4 2->2 4->4 8->8 1->1 2->2 4->4 8->8 1->1 So naively the extra inheritance level seems unnecessary and perhaps having... FFIIntegerType class >> externalTypeSize ^ self externalType byteSize would allow the hierarchy to be flattened. Maybe not a great benefit, except to avoid the next person wondering the same thing :P Also, it is surprising that that FFUInt64 uses #signedLongLongAt: rather than #unsignedLongLongAt: . This seems on-purpose rather than accidental since its inherited by FFIInt64, so it seems there is something interesting to learn here that would benefit a method comment. cheers -ben

bloc readiness for a simple mindmap

Hi, I wanted to ask about Bloc: 1) how stable is the API? e.g. if some overhaul changes to unify/whatever are planned 2) I saw in the techtalk that you can align elements (to center, bottom, ...), however is that possible with lines? Lines have to rotate, morph shape, etc. 3) Are non-straight lines possible? (e.g. bezier, arc) The idea for me is to make a simple mindmap - elements with some text, icons, math symbols inside - connectors (non-straight lines) between elements To me (apart from the lines) it seems like it should be already doable. Also either my (Morphic) Pharo is really slow, or Bloc (in the video) is superfast (everything is happening instantly). Thanks, Peter

Catalog statistics (Who know this projects?)

Soâ¦ I took a couple of minutes to do a small list of project description status: >From a total of 379 projects currently in the catalog, just 115 have a description and/or keywords associated. Which means 264 are mysterious projects nobody can guess what are they about. I was thinking most of this projects would be in Unsorted (or Pharo 3), but I found that many are also on Pharo 5 and 4â¦. which is frankly unacceptable :) Even very important projects like Seaside or Garage and Glorp are not documented. Pharo behind ALLSTOCKER marketplace

Hi all, >From Torsten, I've received a request to post about some technical details of ALLSTOCKER (http://pharo.org/success/AllStocker) . I hope these notes will be interesting to Pharo web developers. - Seaside / Teapot We are using Seaside as a main framework for ALLSTOCKER marketplace. Seaside's component architecture is great for extending application in an organized way. ALLSTOCKER prototype was originally composed of only 3 class categories. Now these were gradually grown to 70 categories. But we still feel that they are manageable. We also use Teapot for building Web-based API in a quick way. Recently we've built webhook handlers for integration with other services. - Templating with Mustaside We need a lot of responsive-design web pages for supporting various mobile devices. (It is important especially for Southeast Asian countries, where tablets are popular than PCs). We would like to adopt existing Twitter Bootstrap templates for saving time. So, Mustaside was our choice. http://smalltalkhub.com/#!/~MasashiUmezawa/Mustaside Before Mustaside, there were a lot of noisy #div: sends in our code. Now they are gone. - Localization Our business target is world-wide. So localization is very important topic. Currently ALLSTOCKER supports 4 languages and we will add Chinese languages soon. Translation strings are not only in Smalltalk code, but also in Mustache templates. Although there are mapping costs, we prefer RDB (Postgres). It is reliable for handling precious order-related data. However, for supporting complex search of machines, we use Neo4j - a graph database. It supports very powerful query language called Cypher. We selected Elasticsearch for search-engine. Elasticsearch has elaborated searching facilities and those are easily accessible via REST API. Two back-end Pharo images are running and load-balanced with sticky sessions. It was sort of difficult to find the appropriate simultaneous number of database connections and Pharo processes. Where are the latest Pharo-spur-vms (32bit) are built? I don't see them on the build server, only the buildresults at http://files.pharo.org/vm/pharo-spur32/linux/ The latest builds on the buildserver are from the last year only. nicolai

macOS Sierra support

Hi, Can someone who really knows/understand please describe where to find the necessary Pharo VM's to run on the newly released macOS Sierra (10.12) ? In particular it seems old VM's just stop working and recent VM's that do work either have issues or cannot run older (3.0, 4.0) images. Thanks, Sven PS: I have not yet upgraded, but one of my colleagues did and he got stuck: even after we found a VM that worked, it could only run 5.0 images, not his production 4.0 images. Needless to say, this is not good. PS2: Another really annoying problem is the following: he saved all his (really important) scripts using Script Manager as a FUEL. Moving between 4.0 and 5.0 FUEL stops working (version incompatibility) - this is really not cool, why would a newer FUEL not be able to read older FUEL. He ended up copying string data by opening the binary FUEL file in a text editor.
