Pharo 6 snap package

Hi Everyone, I've updated the Pharo 6 snap package for Ubuntu. The major advantages of using the snap package are: - No need to install all the 32 bit dependencies on a 64 bit system, they're all contained and isolated within the snap package. - Automagically distinguish between 32 bit and 64 bit images and run the appropriate VM (as with the ZeroConf package, the 64 bit VM still needs more testing). To get Pharo up and running on Ubuntu 16.04 or later: # Install Pharo $ sudo snap install --candidate pharo --classic # If your system isn't configured for threaded heartbeat: $ sudo pharo.config # Download the latest Pharo 6 image $ pharo.getimage # Go... $ pharo.ui Pharo.image # or: $ pharo Pharo.image eval 4+3 To get a list of available commands: $ snap info pharo If you're on Debian or Ubuntu 14.04 you'll need to install snapd, see https://snapcraft.io/docs/core/install The VM is the threaded heartbeat, dated 201705310241. The installation flags are: --candidate - The edge and beta channels are for development versions. It progresses to candidate and then stable. --classic - Snap packages are normally sandboxed for security reasons. Since Pharo is a development environment in which we want to be able to run any executable, or load any library, it is installed with access to the entire system (as the running user). Why use snap packages? - They include all dependencies. In particular, for the 32 bit versions, this means that it isn't necessary to install all the 32 bit architecture and associated dependencies. - Including dependencies means that there shouldn't be any problems with incompatible library versions when upgrading. Why not use snap packages? - It's a relatively new technology, with a number of rough edges. - There may still be issues with its sandboxing that I haven't discovered yet. - Because the package uses classic confinement, it isn't cross-distribution in practice (unfortunately). Please let me know of any other advantages or disadvantages you think should be listed here. Hi, I'm getting this error while trying to prototype some interface with Spec on Moose 6.0: MessageNotUnderstood: ToolDockingBarMorph>>popUpOwner it happens anytime that I'm using displaying a MenuModel and I go to the menu items. I imagine that the menu item is complaining about a lacking pop up message. How can I solve this? Thanks, Offray

Porting Transducers to Pharo

Hi, I am the developer of the library 'Transducers' for VisualWorks. It was formerly known as 'Reducers', but this name was a poor choice. I'd like to port it to Pharo, if there is any interest on your side. I hope to learn more about Pharo in this process, since I am mainly a VW guy. And most likely, I will come up with a bunch of questions. :-) Meanwhile, I'll cross-post the introduction from VWnc below. I'd be very happy to hear your optinions, questions and I hope we can start a fruitful discussion - even if there is not Pharo port yet. Best, Steffen Transducers are building blocks that encapsulate how to process elements of a data sequence independently of the underlying input and output source. # Overview ## Encapsulate Implementations of enumeration methods, such as #collect:, have the logic how to process a single element in common. However, that logic is reimplemented each and every time. Transducers make it explicit and facilitate re-use and coherent behavior. For example: - #collect: requires mapping: (aBlock1 map) - #select: requires filtering: (aBlock2 filter) ## Compose In practice, algorithms often require multiple processing steps, e.g., mapping only a filtered set of elements. Transducers are inherently composable, and hereby, allow to make the combination of steps explicit. Since transducers do not build intermediate collections, their composition is memory-efficient. For example: - (aBlock1 filter) * (aBlock2 map) "(1.) filter and (2.) map elements" ## Re-Use Transducers are decoupled from the input and output sources, and hence, they can be reused in different contexts. For example: - enumeration of collections - processing of streams - communicating via channels # Usage by Example We build a coin flipping experiment and count the occurrence of heads and tails. First, we associate random numbers with the sides of a coin. scale := [:x | (x * 2 + 1) floor] map. sides := #(heads tails) replace. Scale is a transducer that maps numbers x between 0 and 1 to 1 and 2. Sides is a transducer that replaces the numbers with heads an tails by lookup in an array. Next, we choose a number of samples. count := 1000 take. Count is a transducer that takes 1000 elements from a source. We keep track of the occurrences of heads an tails using a bag. collect := [:bag :c | bag add: c; yourself]. Collect is binary block (reducing function) that collects events in a bag. We assemble the experiment by transforming the block using the transducers. experiment := (scale * sides * count) transform: collect. From left to right we see the steps involved: scale, sides, count and collect. Transforming assembles these steps into a binary block (reducing function) we can use to run the experiment. samples := Random new reduce: experiment init: Bag new. Here, we use #reduce:init:, which is mostly similar to #inject:into:. To execute a transformation and a reduction together, we can use #transduce:reduce:init:. samples := Random new transduce: scale * sides * count reduce: collect init: Bag new. We can also express the experiment as data-flow using #<~. This enables us to build objects that can be re-used in other experiments. coin := sides <~ scale <~ Random new. flip := Bag <~ count. Coin is an eduction, i.e., it binds transducers to a source and understands #reduce:init: among others. Flip is a transformed reduction, i.e., it binds transducers to a reducing function and an initial value. By sending #<~, we draw further samples from flipping the coin. samples := flip <~ coin. This yields a new Bag with another 1000 samples. # Basic Concepts ## Reducing Functions A reducing function represents a single step in processing a data sequence. It takes an accumulated result and a value, and returns a new accumulated result. For example: collect := [:col :e | col add: e; yourself]. sum := #+. A reducing function can also be ternary, i.e., it takes an accumulated result, a key and a value. For example: collect := [:dic :k :v | dict at: k put: v; yourself]. Reducing functions may be equipped with an optional completing action. After finishing processing, it is invoked exactly once, e.g., to free resources. stream := [:str :e | str nextPut: each; yourself] completing: #close. absSum := #+ completing: #abs A reducing function can end processing early by signaling Reduced with a result. This mechanism also enables the treatment of infinite sources. nonNil := [:res :e | e ifNil: [Reduced signalWith: res] ifFalse: [res]]. The primary approach to process a data sequence is the reducing protocol with the messages #reduce:init: and #transduce:reduce:init: if transducers are involved. The behavior is similar to #inject:into: but in addition it takes care of: - handling binary and ternary reducing functions, - invoking the completing action after finishing, and - stopping the reduction if Reduced is signaled. The message #transduce:reduce:init: just combines the transformation and the reducing step. However, as reducing functions are step-wise in nature, an application may choose other means to process its data. ## Reducibles A data source is called reducible if it implements the reducing protocol. Default implementations are provided for collections and streams. Additionally, blocks without an argument are reducible, too. This allows to adapt to custom data sources without additional effort. For example: "XStreams adaptor" xstream := filename reading. reducible := [[xstream get] on: Incomplete do: [Reduced signal]]. "natural numbers" n := 0. reducible := [n := n+1]. ## Transducers A transducer is an object that transforms a reducing function into another. Transducers encapsulate common steps in processing data sequences, such as map, filter, concatenate, and flatten. A transducer transforms a reducing function into another via #transform: in order to add those steps. They can be composed using #* which yields a new transducer that does both transformations. Most transducers require an argument, typically blocks, symbols or numbers: square := Map function: #squared. take := Take number: 1000. To facilitate compact notation, the argument types implement corresponding methods: squareAndTake := #squared map * 1000 take. Transducers requiring no argument are singletons and can be accessed by their class name. flattenAndDedupe := Flatten * Dedupe. # Advanced Concepts ## Data flows Processing a sequence of data can often be regarded as a data flow. The operator #<~ allows define a flow from a data source through processing steps to a drain. For example: squares := Set <~ 1000 take <~ #squared map <~ (1 to: 1000). fileOut writeStream <~ #isSeparator filter <~ fileIn readStream. In both examples #<~ is only used to set up the data flow using reducing functions and transducers. In contrast to streams, transducers are completely independent from input and output sources. Hence, we have a clear separation of reading data, writing data and processing elements. - Sources know how to iterate over data with a reducing function, e.g., via #reduce:init:. - Drains know how to collect data using a reducing function. - Transducers know how to process single elements. ## Reductions A reduction binds an initial value or a block yielding an initial value to a reducing function. The idea is to define a ready-to-use process that can be applied in different contexts. Reducibles handle reductions via #reduce: and #transduce:reduce: For example: sum := #+ init: 0. sum1 := #(1 1 1) reduce: sum. sum2 := (1 to: 1000) transduce: #odd filter reduce: sum. asSet := [:set :e | set add: e; yourself] initializer: [Set new]. set1 := #(1 1 1) reduce: asSet. set2 := #(1 to: 1000) transduce: #odd filter reduce: asSet. By combining a transducer with a reduction, a process can be further modified. sumOdds := sum <~ #odd filter setOdds := asSet <~ #odd filter ## Eductions An eduction combines a reducible data sources with a transducer. The idea is to define a transformed (virtual) data source that needs not to be stored in memory. odds1 := #odd filter <~ #(1 2 3) readStream. odds2 := #odd filter <~ (1 to 1000). Depending on the underlying source, eductions can be processed once (streams, e.g., odds1) or multiple times (collections, e.g., odds2). Since no intermediate data is stored, transducers actions are lazy, i.e., they are invoked each time the eduction is processed. # Origins Transducers is based on the same-named Clojure library and its ideas. Hi I read the chapter on validation of the mentoring course book of andres valloud. http://www.lulu.com/fr/fr/shop/andres-valloud/a-mentoring-course-on-smallta… And I love this extension of SUnit. I loved the idea when I saw it for the first time at Lugano (presentation of Leandro Caniglia). I encourage everybody to read it. Now does anybody implemented in Pharo the SUnit extension? I would like to play with it and eventually write a chapter on it for the next book. The idea is so good. Stef

OSProcess lock image

Hello, On Pharo4, when I type the command: OSProcess waitForCommand: 'ls' it locks the image, I can get back control with [Alt]-. With the same image and VM, this command was previously working, even called from a Seaside component. Any idea? Thanks Hilaire -- Dr. Geo http://drgeo.eu

Hi, Pillar now ships with a text editor that also features a syntax highlighter. So, now, if you load the development version of Pillar: Gofer new smalltalkhubUser: 'Pier' project: 'Pillar'; configuration; loadDevelopment. You will have an extra presentation when inspecting a .pillar file: The new thing here is that the highlighter is based on the Pillar PetitParser, and it is extensible for highlighting more parts if needed. The highlighting also can support actions. For example, the picture above shows the file to the right after clicking on the reference. Please take a look and let me know what you think. Hi, A Dr. Geo user asked me about copying a DrGeo canvas view in the system clipboard, to past it in other tools as a text writer or any other editing tool. I looked in Pharo3 and Pharo6, I found text clipboard operation but it is not clear if there is support for other format? YAML parser (2017)

Hi, do we have a working parser for YAML? There's PPYAMLGrammar (in PetitParser), however it doesn't seem to work in Pharo 6 at all (not even tests pass). In Pharo 5 the tests are green, but using it on YAML content still fails... with small fix I managed it to "pass", however the output seems to be a very fine-grained AST decomposition and not the expected output (dictionaries/arrays). So do we have some else/working? YAML specs have BNF descriptions, so maybe SmaCC can generate it? (I don't know SmaCC, so maybe this is not how it works.) Thanks, Peter

I was wondering: a) I'm assuming PharoJS would be much like Amber but inside the Pharo VM. b) How much of the Amber codebase could be re-used for it? I'm interested on the one hand, mainly due to the demand for Angular code in the browser (jQuery is great in Seaside, but many clients are looking for Angular recently), and my distaste for debugging JavaScript. Amber is ok but lacks the depth of tooling in Pharo, and isn't keeping up with the (constant) breaking changes in node and NPM. (Not that I blame the developers of Amber, it's a problem with the mindset of the developers in the JavaScript ecosystem - the way that Angular2 is almost completely different from Angular is an example of the lack of interest in the existing user base). The problem I see is that PharoJS would have the same issues. As a result it would not only be a fair amount of work to accomplish, it would be far more to maintain. The Pharo ecosystem is based on an entirely opposite mindset to the JS ecosystem - a few very good frameworks and a reasonable number of very good libraries, resulting in highly maintainable code even on projects with only one or two developers. On top of that it would have to deal with the issues with JS itself that make writing decent tools virtually impossible. How do you develop for gemstone in open source tools (pharo)?

Hello, I'm curious how _comfortably_ develop software for Gemstone, which is the preferred/best way (and future)? 1) tODE - OK, a decent amount of work was inserted to it to make it work somehow. Decent tools with git support, a lot of windows (autolayouting required), very basic inspector, based on obsolete Pharo3, no autocomplete, weird auto code formating etc. :( Will the development continue (better inspectors, autocomplete, etc)? 2) gt4gemstone - new project based on GT tools, great playground/workspace/inspectors, running in latest Pharo, but again, just basic browser, no autocompletion, no syntax coloring (so far), but modern way What is the plan? Write proper class browser and code editor again from scratch? There is amazing new browser for Pharo, Calypso, which has remote browsing capabilities (but probably different remoting/proxy layer than gt tools) - is possible to utilize this project for remote Gemstone browsing in future? 3) develop in Pharo, then deploy to Gemstone With some compatibility layers, there is possibility to develop application/business logic in Pharo (with bare collections, dicts, containers etc.) and then deploy code to Gemstone and test. Nice scenario, latest modern dev tools (browsers, inspectors, versioning) from Pharo, but on the dev side in Pharo, no transaction logic (test transaction logic with junit impossible/not available etc.), also not compatible class library - so also with drawbacks with different Smalltalk implementation chaos :( I would very much like to get involved with Gemstone dev, but it scratches a bit now. How to view hierarchy of multiple classes in a package?

Hi guys - I'm trying to get back into pharo, and check out the advances in v5. Anyway, if I look at a package in the system browser, it shows me classes in that package (i think my terminology is right here?). What confuses me, is his I can see the hire hybrid the classes in relation to each other? The hier button just shows the hierarchy of the selected class and not in relation to the others? I'm sure at some point pharo and squeak let you see the related hierarchies of all the classes in the package didn't it? This is really useful to help understand the relationship between classes and pure risky identify useful refactorings. I can't see how to do this in pharo anymore? Is this functionality that has been lost (which seems a shame)? Or am I missing another useful browsers? Tim Sent from my iPhone

Are we able to run pharo images in a read only environment?

Hi - I am trying to run a pharo image in lambda (as an experiment) - however I get an error from Pharo about not being able to write to the changes file? As I am just evaluating some code - Iâm not really coding, so donât need a changes file - is there a command line option to not require it? Also, am I running pharo the most efficient way - Iâm using eval on the command line and referencing a class with a class method - but is this the best way? Pharo command line, stdout and integrating with other tools?

Hi - I've been playing with using Pharo with Aws lambda and have got an image to launch in that environment. However now I need to better integrate Pharo with its calling environment - and I know there was a concerted effort to make Pharo play better which I should be able to leverage. So I am calling Pharo from a NodeJS wrapper (the suggested aws method for integrating alternative languages like Ruby, Go etc). I got this to work - however as an observation, it is rather awkward passing parameters to Pharo using the "eval" mechanism as other languages and environments frequently use the " character (particularly with Json) and this causes Pharo to fail if you don't \" this. I'm wondering if others have noted this and whether we can do this better somehow? For now a little nodeJS regex fu gets me past it. However my next question is about passing information back to the calling application. I can see that there is a stdout method on Fikestream that I can write to (great), however in my ./pharo eval call, which sends to a class method doing this - it also returns the result of that method or yourself? I guess this convention is great for the "eval 42 factorial" example but not so great of you just want to return some Json via stdout in a format of the calling environment? Is there something simple trick I can do to stop this extra result and just let me use stdout myself? Or do I have to return a Smalltalk string and then regex convert it to a new format in my calling language? I'm wondering if others have done this, or if anyone has some advice? I would like to understand in more detail what data are serialized, if I can somehow alter it (filter it) explicitly, and how can I handle errors on materialization. I was playing a bit with it and in some case, during the materialization, it complained that there is a missing class, but I was pretty sure that the class has nothing to do with the serialized objects. So, I will appreciate any documentation that helps to understand how I can analyze what is serialized and how to handle materialization errors. Thanks! Juraj

Francis, You're using an empty salt when creating the hash. Just prepending a random number does not add much security. Anyone knowing your solution will just prepend a random number. And creating only a few accounts in your system will probably reveal that information as well. A wrong-doer will just use a fake salt and will still be able to try a rainbow table attack. Please use a real random value for the salt. And easiest would be to give it a fixed size. (Don't have an image and/or code available, so this might lead to some pseudo code ;-) To generate a safe password hash which you can store in your db, the following method. It creates a random number (your example of a UUID of 16 bytes) and uses that as a salt for the password hash. Both values are then concatenated and returned as a 'safe' password. This can be stored in your db. To validate a user's password you retrieve the safePasswordHash from your db (based on the user's id) and validate the given password against it. For this the salt is retrieved from the safePasswordHash (first 16 bytes because UUID is 16 bytes) and it is then used to calculate the hash of the given password. It should match the second part of the safePasswordHash. Hope this helps. For real safety, please add some checks for valid values. Did we receive a valid password? Is the safePasswordHash the correct length (in this case 32 bytes)? You might consider using another salt generator than UUID. Francis, The hashpw function returns a hash with the salt prepended. So it contains both elements. (See for example explanation at: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/27413248/why-can-bcrypt-hashpw-be-used-…) You can do the same thing here. Assuming you have a fixed size salt, just prepend it before the hash value. Since the salt is (should be) random, returning it's value does not weaken the security. Using a salt prevents against rainbow table attacks: pre-generated hash values for many possible passwords. Pharo6 playground saving semantics and .changes?

Hi - I really like the playground metaphor, it really is such a nice way to experiment. However I've noticed that unlike older versions of Smalltalk, it seems that DoIt operations in playground don't end up in the .changes file anymore (which I guess is a mixed blessing when you want to recover). It seems that the new metaphor is that work you do is saved as a page and you can see versions of your page in the upper right menu? Well sort of - as I haven't quite understood when it saves or doesn't? Often I get duplicate looking pages in that menu and often I make a change and want to keep it but find it doesn't save and if I accidentally close my playground my changes in a page are lost? What are the semantics of page saving? An example - if you do a few gofer loads of utilities and the put a comment on the first line of the page (which gives it a nice title in the page dropdown), sometimes that comment will be saved other times not? I also think it might be nice to remove page versions to help tidy things up. Hi, Thanks Sven. This solves the problem. The issue was the 32 bit library. I don't know if this should be added as some kind of annotation or footnode to [1], because the chapter suposse a 32-bit Ubuntu Gnu/Linux deployment, but some of us are going to try similar stuff in similar environment, forgetting to install the 32 bits libraries. Anyway, if there is any room for this, I would be happy to make the edition with the respective pull request. Hi, I'm trying to deploy a small web app in Teapot, following the Enterprise Pharo documentation and so, using Pharo 4 in the server. Installation went fine, but when I try to actually use the app and I get this error: ZdcPluginMissing: SSL/TLS plugin initailization failed (VM plugin missing ? OS libraries missing ?) Looking at [1] I see that this is because Pharo VM is expecting to found libssl at some place. My server is a virtual Debian 6 64 bits, as provided by Digital Ocean. When I locate the missing library and make a symbolic link using: ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libssl.so.1.0.0 /usr/lib/libssl.so.1.0.0 I still get this behavior: ldd libSqueakSSL.so linux-gate.so.1 (0xf7747000) libssl.so.1.0.0 => not found libc.so.6 => /lib32/libc.so.6 (0xf758b000) /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0xf774a000) So, still is not finding the libssl.so. [1] https://stackoverflow.com/questions/12293670/zodiac-mail-sending-in-pharo-s… I don't know if this is related with running a 32 VM inside a Debian 64 bits distro, but running the chapter 2 example of the Enterprise Pharo, I have not any problem like this one, on the same virtual server while deploying the web app. How can I solve this? ZnConstants missing 511 in default Pharo 6.0 32 image?

Hi - I have been slowly working my way through some of the pharo components and tutorials and when trying out ZnEasy with a password protected api, I got a talkback when I mistyped a password. It looks like ZnConstants in a fresh Pharo 6.0 32 image excludes 511 from its constants. The code looks correct (and its defined in the initialize method - ) but when I tried a ZnEasy call which returned 511 I got a walkback showing it as an unrecognized code? (The walkback is looking for 511 in ZnConstants httpStatusCodes). Is there some problem in the build process, or is this some type of user error? Tim

Using Iceberg to edit regular text files ?

Is it possible to use Iceberg to edit regular text files directly in Pharo ? Specifically I would like to be able to edit README.md and similar files. Especially when using a all-in-one, the repo on file becomes quite hidden, and the whole idea is to hide the command line anyway, so it feels as if that should have to be possible. Maybe just open a File Browser on the right directory ? Sven PS: I also had the impression that class comment changes did not show up in the diff browser.

The core system is pharo4 and voyage (using mongo). The user interface is done with seaside. It interfaces with a legacy patient information system, microsoft exchange and other stuff in order to orchestrate the arrangement of surgery dates. The tool automates planning (which doctor works on which day and has still time to do the operation,â¦.). Finalized plans are produced in PDF an printed by the staff. This as a short info. Okay, so I have my nice little Teapot app, but I'd like to run it as HTTPS. As far as I can understand, to do this I must go through Zinc. However, the docs on the web seem rather out of date. For example, I do not have ZnZincServerAdapter (in Pharo 5.0). In the simplest terms, how do I support HTTPS? (I've created my self-signed cert.) Hi, I have a code like this: FastTableModel new displayBlock: [ :node | node name ]; items: Collection withAllSubclasses; openWithSpec. Which works fine. But I would like to define row height for each item. FTTableMorph has a method rowHeight:. Is it possible? One possible use case could be: FastTableModel new displayBlock: [ :node | node name, String cr, â number of methods: ', node methods size asString ]; items: Collection withAllSubclasses; "rowHeight: 50;â âdoes not work" openWithSpec In that case, each list item is composed by a class name on the first line, and the number of methods on the second line. Spect TextModel with transparent background

Hi, is it possible to set a transparent color to the TextModel? I want a text information that may take a few lines, that is able to wrap according to a window size. So, using LabelModel does not fit, because it does not wrap lines. But it looks like TextModel always looks like text editing area. Any idea how to do it? I have tried this: TextModel new text: 'any very very very long text that does not fit to one line'; color: Color transparent; disable; openWithSpec. And it does not work. Ideally it should look like the label model, but with wrapped text: LabelModel new label: 'any very very very long text that does not fit to one line'; openWithSpec Also, executing this: TextModel new text: 'any very very very long text that does not fit to one line'; color: Color transparent; borderColor: Color blue; borderWidth: 50; disable; openWithSpec. I think it has a huge potential because it brings the browser runtime and many libraries and online services from the JS world to us Smalltalkers while letting us keep our agile development and good CS practices. Dear World, The time has come for Pharo 6.0! Pharo is a pure object-oriented programming language and a powerful environment, focused on simplicity and immediate feedback. P6: How to get focus for mouse wheel event

Hi, With Dr. Geo under P6 I have a usability regression with the GeneralScrollPane of the File thumbnail dialog: This dialog does not have any more the focus when open by default. It is a problem when the user wants to browse with mouse wheel the sketch previews. Indeed he needs to first click on the dialog then he can browser with the mouse wheel. Hello, it's me again still struggeling with the same issue on two different machines: Ubuntu 16.04 and Fedora 25. On all machines the same behaviour, I'm getting the error: "Information Pharo cannot locate the sources file named /home/marc/PharoWorkspace/Pharo/pharo6.0/bin/lib/pharo/5.0-201705310241/PharoV60.sources. Please check that the file is named properly and is in the same directory as this image." I'm wondering why Pharo is looking in this folder, because the source file is present in the shared folder, where also the default Pharo6.0.image and Pharo6.0.changes live in: /home/marc/PharoWorkspace/Pharo/pharo6.0/PharoWorkspace/Pharo/pharo6.0/shared/PharoV60.sources Any ideas? I'm a little helpless... ;-) Btw. this is Pharo 64bit... Cairo related crash with Dr. Geo

Hi guys, Does this error related to Cairo makes sense to you? It is happening on DrGeo 17.07 (based on Pharo3), on a LinuxMint 18.1 64bits based on Ubuntu 16.04. Dr. Geo apparently crash quite quickly All the necessary 32bits libs are installed. It seems LinuxMint18.1 Cairo is 1.14.6-1 and ubuntu 14.04 1.13.0~20140204-0ubuntu1.1 where DrGeo is know to work perfectly. Anonymous classes performances

I have been playing a bit with anonymous subclasses, and instances of anon subclasses seem slower to execute code than "regular" subclasses instances, but sometimes they reach equivalent performances (for code defined in anon-subclasses). I don't understand why. I have a class A with a method m. B is subclass of A with a new method m1. Anon-A is an anonymous class of A which also implements the m1 method. I did various tests of speed and: - when executing m, compiled in A, instances of Anon-A are around 10% slower than instances of B - when executing m1, compiled in B and in Anon-A, performances are equivalent between instances of B and of anon-A Is that a particular behavior of anonymous subclasses, like their instances can easily find behavior defined in their class but have to perform extra-work to find methods defined in their superclass (which is not anonymous) ? Is that vm related ? Other ? Steven.

Hi, as Pharo6 is around the corner I have moved my CI build from tracking Pharo5 to Pharo6 but I run into a problem. Either if $HOME is not set at all or $HOME points to a wrong directory I run into the error below. As this is a server application and I run multiple VMs with the same image and there is no home directory I would prefer that no information is persisted at all. Can this be done? Have there been any changes in Pharo6 in regard to this? It also seems to change from Fuel->Ston for the identifier? Autoformatting in SystemBrowser

Hello, since Pharo6 my method comments in the SystemBrowser gets automatically removed. My arguments get also removed, so when I type: SomeClass >> name: aString "sets the name instance variable" name := aString it gets corrected to: SomeClass >> name: arg1 name := arg1 How can I configure this behaviour? Can not save the source file

Hello, when I open up my Pharo6.0 image and left+click > save as... to save my image, Pharo tells me that it could no save the source file. Loading Dr. Geo in Pharo6

Hi, When I install DrGeo from its configuration file in Pharo6, I got the following VM error. I guess the addStartUpList protocol is obsolete. One option is to modify Dr. Geo code in Pharo3 to remove startup activation, save in the repo, then load newer code in Pharo6, and get it fixed. Zink geo location data reading

Hi, I'm playing around with Zink reading the geo location of any IP-address. Evaluating the code below in a playground works fine. But what is the best way to read the entity data of the ZnResponse instance I get back. About how to benchmark the lookup speed...

Hi, i'm having trouble doing benchmarks in Pharo, at least i don't understand the results (maybe i'm missing something). I want to compare anonymous subclasses lookup speed with standard pharo classes lookup speed. I have a method m and a method m2 that execute the following code: ^ 100 printString. I have implemented these 2 methods in one class then in one anonymous subclass. I thought that measuring the execution speed of the same code in these two different cases would give me different times if the lookup speed was not the same. So I did the following: |o results repetitions | o := theClass new. results := OrderedCollection new. repetitions := 100. repetitions timesRepeat:[ results add: [1000000 timesRepeat:[o m]] timeToRun]. I do the same for m2, and then i compute an average of all the values measured in results. What i don't understand is that, for example, for an average on 100 measurements, m is 1% slower and m2 is 2% faster in the Pharo class case than with anonymous subclasses. But for 1 000 measurements, m is 11% faster but m2 is 3% slower. Results continue to vary as i change the number of measurements, but they do not increase with it (seems not to be linear). I don't have enough knowledge about how to benchmark code, or what will make a difference in Pharo. For now the only explanations i have is that maybe the results are too slow to be significant and then they can vary, or i have done something wrong in how i measure it. How would you measure the lookup speed of a method ? Steven.

Metacello / Iceberg flags

Hi All, I'm sure I saw a message on this list (maybe pharo-dev) that specified a flag that will cause github repositories loaded through Metacello to be automatically added to Iceberg. My memory is that it was on prior to the Pharo 6 release, and turned off just before the release. I've searched through the mailing list archives, but haven't been able to find it. Help in thinking about how to save a "program"

Hi all. Iâm new to Pharo and loving it. As I transition from a text-file based mindset, Iâm a little stuck and would appreciate help in how to think about a situation in a Pharonic (Pharo-ish, Pharoc?) way. Iâm crafting a short program to help me process a large text file (specifically: extract, sorting, and regularizing the âkeywordâ fields of a large BibTex file). Especially since I donât really know what Iâm doing, working in a Playground has been a great development environment. Now that the program is complete (under 30 lines, wonderful), I want to be able to save it for future reference (and perhaps for future use). If Iâd written a shell script, Iâd just save âfixBibDeskKeyWords.shâ to a directory. Iâm not sure what to do in the Pharo environment, thought. At the moment, it just lives in the Playground Iâve developed it on. I could save the image and leave that Playground open, but Iâm just positive thatâs not a best practice. I also worry about what happens if I closed/cleared that Playground by accident. I think I understand that, if I created a new package, I could use Monticello to save it to a local cache and load it into a new image whenever I needed it. But, given that itâs short, highly specialized and fairly linear, the idea of creating a âGHBibDeskStuffâ package with one class (âGBibDeskKeywordFixerâ containing a single âFixFileâ method seems really heavy and awkward. Can one save the contents of a Playground in a Pharonic way? Is there a better approach? Thank you to all involved in this wonderful programming ecosystem. I appreciate any advice. I'm a Pharo newbie. How can I use libraries like SDL2 or GTK+ from Pharo? Should this be done through FFI or a VM plugin? And in either case is there a guide to how to implement things using that technique?
