Hi, In a few weeks I will give a speech in Taiwan at NCHC[1] about Pharo, my intend is to present release 4. I already did speeches there in the past about Pharo, but I have a hard time to raise interest to the point people want to jump in. But I hope to have an angle this time because NCHC recently offers a server and the hosting for an openstreetmap tile server (the first in Asia by the way), and there is high interest here in Taiwan about OSM related stuff. I read here, job has been done with Roassal and OSM, but it is not clear for me how to get in using OSM within Pharo. I am particularly interested in providing an interactive demo where live programming shows its value. I have found these pointers bellow. [ANN] GT presentations now available as a Spec widget

Hi all, thanks to help from the GT guys Andrei and Alexei here at ESUG15 I am now happy to announce that Spec can now play together nicely with GT presentations :-) Concretely: I have implemented a new Spec ComposableModel called GlamourPresentationModel that acts as a small wrapper around any presentation of Glamour (i.e. any subclass of GLMPresentation). With this, you can use as a widget in your Spec UI such cool things like - The GT Inspector - The Playground - The Browser GlamourPresentationModel is a very small class that is easy to use, with just one API method for its configuration. By default it opens a Playground, but you can configure it to open any GLMPresentation subclass. Here are 2 examples: "open a playground" GlamourPresentationModel new openWithSpec. "open an inspector on 42" |ui| ui := GlamourPresentationModel new. ui presentationClass: GTInspector startOn: 42. ui openWithSpec The GlamourPresentationModel is currently in my Playground repository on Smalltalkhub. Is anyone experimenting with PharoJS? I managed to get the page with the core javascript functions to load - as localhost - but I couldn't get any of the actions in the workspace to have any effect on the web browser console. Has anyone had any success? Cheers Andy

(Kind of urgent) Phratch: operators don't work at all on last verion!

Hi all, Today we started to use phratch to a group of people without much of any experience with computer programming. The idea is to have a workshop today and tomorrow start with more symbolic and abstract approach using Pharo and give them a taste of the several levels of programmig and exploration this environment provides. But my main problem is that operators dont work on Phratch. We get a MNU as soon as we select the operators button which is a real stoper for any advance stuff. We're using the currently available package from the download page. Can somebody help me on this? Also: Â¿How can we erase a line drawn with the pencil on the background? Just do a google for Noury and PharoJs I found out about it from Torsten's blog - always worth reading :-) AIUI, what it does is convert Pharo code - in the fly - to JavaScript. I can't say much more because I haven't got it to run. However, it is on small talk hub, so ease give it a go.

Saving image sometimes corrupts it

Hello I come with another probably-only-mine-windows-related problem which I am unable to reproduce from a clean image. I use latest image 50170, latest (9th July 2015) Windows VM, Windows 7 64bit. So there is my vague description: When I load some project, modify it few times and save it, then SOMETIMES (seems random to me) when I try to open this saved image, it immediately crashes VM and does not even produce crash.dmp file (well, it creates it, but empty). For example, I have such image... I save it, do not close it, try to open it, crash, save it again, try to open it, it runs, save it again, close, try to open it, crash. Without any change inside the image by my hand. I tried doing something similar with clean image, but it never corrupted it. I am unable to open such image even on my Linux machine. It at least generates output when segmentation fault happens: http://pastebin.com/KLry40Hu HDD I am saving it to does not show any signs of damage, everything else is working (and saving) just fine. Hi dear all, I am currently taking a couple of tutorials on Pharo and I noticed that cutting and pasting code snippets from the web, pdf, notepad, ... to Pharo 4.0 was not working on my Windows 8.1 installation. I double checked that versions 3.0 and current 5.0 exhibited the same behavior on 8.1.I double-checked this problem does not manifest on Windows 7. Am I the only one to experience it?Thanks in advance,Â Dominique

Hi, I'm experiencing an issue when using whileFalse:, in Pharo 4. I've just looking for opened bugs in pharo.fogbugz.com but I don't see any matching my problem, apparently. In the following example, I get a SubscriptOutOfBounds: 0. Object subclass: #WhileFalseIssue instanceVariableNames: 'myFlag' classVariableNames: '' category: 'MyTests' WhileFalseIssue>>attemptUninitialized [ myFlag ] whileFalse: [myFlag := true ]. ^ myFlag. WhileFalseIssue>>attemptInitialized myFlag := false. [ myFlag ] whileFalse: [myFlag := true ]. ^ myFlag. Calling attempt like this: WhileFalseIssue new attemptUninitialized. launches the debugger with "SubscriptOutOfBounds: 0" (see attached screenshot), whereas WhileFalseIssue new attemptInitialized. works fine. Hi, The default search options that come with GTSpotter are nice, but the power of a moldable tool like GTSpotter stems from how it can be extended by external packages. To get an idea of how this works in practice, you can find an example of how to make GTSpotter to extend the search through files with the ability of diving in an XML file in the XMLParser project. <example> pragmas and example* methods use-cases

Hi, there was a long discussion about the meaning of example* methods and <example> pragmas, however I do not know what was the final resolution. Basically I am interested in two use-cases 1. executable example (the one where Nautilus shows nice play icon) This is as I understand only through example* naming (on class-side). 2. returning examples (example that returns some value that I can reuse) Is this what <example> pragma is for? How would I go about naming it considering that having play icon there would be counter-productive (user would be clicking on it and nothing would happen). Thanks, Peter

Meta repo for pharo 5.0 / pharo catalog

I just added the class side information to my metacello configuration in order to have it displayed better in the pharo catalog. In the pharo catalog it says that my package (mustache) has not been tagged for pharo 5.0. I don't know how this information is derived. And I cannot see a meta repo for pharo 5.0 where I can put the configuration. Has this process changed. Are there any pointers I can get information about. Thanks Norbert

I probably messed up with .changes...

Hello, I would just like to report something that happened to me today. As I was working on a project, I tried inserting an instance variable to one of my classes. Starting from this moment something became very weird. First, some subclasses were not listed as subclasses anymore, then I realised during the execution that allocating my new instance variable was actually modifying another instance variable. I tried digging up a bit and I found out that many of my methods were a complete mess. When browsing with Nautilus the title of the method was for example: "addProperty:key:". However the corpse of the method was totally random with something like that for example: "ient; width: 1. graphic strokeStyle: _strokeStyle" So, reportedly, the name of the method was "ient;" ... Basically I had many methods where the source code was just random chunks of other methods. The funnier thing is that everything worked perfectly fine during execution. I tried to look at different backup images I had to see when everything began to go wrong and I realised I had been working with broken source code for about a week. So if I understand correctly, I probably messed up with the .changes file (I don't remembr how but maybe I copied the .image without the .changes or renamed the .image or i don't know). And now the compiled code is okay but the source code is lost so everything is working fine until the system tries to recompile everything ? Now my question is : is there a way to fix the issue ? I tried exporting the package to a .mcz but I had bugs everywhere. I imported the old working package to an .mcz and tried browsing the differences with the broken one just to manually get back eveything I changed during this week. But I couldn't cause there were bugs everytime I tried to browse the changes. Basically, are all my changes definitely lost or is there a way to get it back somehow (at least the raw source code) ? I know that I fucked up and this is my fault but it would have been nice if something (anything) told me earlier that I did something wrong. I've been adding / modifying lots of methods and even executing the program for a week now and absolutely nothing told me that something was wrong until I tried adding an instance variable. I am in a situation where I actually wrote and "saved" code and now it seems lost... that's frustrating :( Thanks, Matthieu

Clearing objects from .changes

Is it possible to remove all references to a class after it has been removed everywhere? For example I can delete all classes of package 'Roassal2-Builder-Grapher' ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ pkg := RPackageOrganizer default packageNamed: 'Roassal2'. grapherTag := pkg classTags detect: [ :each | each name = #'Builder-Grapher' ]. grapherTag classes do: [ :each | removeClass value: each ]. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ However this leaves the .changes file intact, even after I do "Smalltalk cleanUp: true". The reason why I am doing this is to lower the size of .changes/.images files which are massive just after loading my project... so it takes a lot of space for testing... Thanks, Peter

Athens and radial gradient

Hello, I wanted to use Athens API to define a radial gradient and I saw that the class RadialGradientPaint only had one radius as instance variable and it seemed to me it was passed as the end radius while the start radius was set to 0. Finding error in STON string

Would be possible for STON to report context for error? For example STON fromString: '[ "first", "second", ]' reports "At character 23: invalid input" which is not very useful especially in longer strings. (at: 23 is actually Character cr) Maybe better would be something like 'At character 23: invalid input near "second", ]' so I already see the surrounding text (this is not perfect, but I find it very common for example to forget comma when moving things around in array. Or even better, allow comma after the last item. (Arguably even JSON (unlike JavaScript) doesn't allow this so maybe it would break stuff.) Peter

NeoCSVReader and an empty field at the very end of a file

Hi there, I am on VA Smalltalk and therefor using an older version of NeoCSV (SvenVanCaekenberghe.14). I found a bug in this old version that is somewhat special. It seems NeoCSV cannot handle the situation where the very last field is just empty AND if there is no trailing CRLF at the end of the file. Somethinng like this: SecondLastColumnValue;;<EOF> In that case, readField fails because it tries to do a readQuotedField or readUnquotedField, both of which try to read beyond EOF. So I changed readField to this: readField ^self atEnd "In case the very last field of a file is empty, like '45;56;;'" ifTrue: [''] ifFalse: [self peekQuote ifTrue: [self readQuotedField] ifFalse: [self readUnquotedField]] and all seems fine so far. Side note: My original file has a trailing CrLf but if I upload it via a browser to a Seaside Server, the Browser cuts off the trailing CrLf (I can see this in the Browser's Network debugging tools - both in IE and FF) - so it seems NeoCSV has to be ready for this situation. Phratch: Support for Spanish language in the interface

Hi, Some teachers are considering to make some field work with Phratch on learning physics by modelling simple real world phenomena (uniform accelerated movement, free fall etc). I downloaded it today and try to change the interface to Spanish, but I couldn't find the proper place to do it. Has Phratch support for a Spanish interface. Morphic offers everything needed to create highly interactive applications in Pharo. It is however, difficult to find out how to actually create those applications. Morphic tutorials provide a starting point, and are not very good at showing how the different features interact and are supposed to be used together. Morph has lots of methods, and some of them are not in the method category where you might expect them. The result is that most Morphs in Pharo do not use much of what Morphic has to offer. Wouldn't it be great if there would be some sample code, showing how Morphic can be used to great effect? Well, here is some code that takes a first step towards that goal. DragPanels shows how to create a floating palette, filled with wells that support dragging a property towards a target. It shows how to combine drag-and drop with click: and context menu actions, and show to give UI feedback when over a well and when holding the mouse down over an element that reacts to click:. You can see the code in action here: https://vimeo.com/131889858 The color panel shows some colors. If you don't set the allowDropBlock, it will work with any morph that responds to #color: (like the world). By clicking on the plus, you can add more colors to the panel. The panel has a context menu to restore the default values. ColorPanel withSevenPaleColors allowDropBlock: [ :source :target | target class = CardMorph ]; openInHand The people panel shows avatars belonging to an email addres. By default it uses gravatar for them, and caches the images. Slow compilation on one of my Windows PCs

Hello I have a long-term problem with loading of packages. Compilation takes very long time on my Windows PCs. On desktop it takes "only" double amount of time in comparison with linux, but on notebook, it is more than 10 times slower. Desktop has Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and notebook PC with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, both have somehow similar specs (4-6 years old dual-core processors on 2,9 and 2,4 GHz), similar software, both have magnetic HDDs. I believe it used to take very long time on my notebook too, but I tried opening Pharo there again and it was somehow OK, but I'm not aware of any major change which could have caused it ... I mean... a lot changes on my PCs, but I can't remember anything which could directly affect it. Following "benchmarks" are both on same (copy paste) of VM - Windows VM 453 from 2015-06-18. Both on clean image 50141. All tested in as much as similar conditions as possible with everything else (possible) turned off. However, it used to be slow like that for a long time on multiple previous VMs and images since I can even remember (which is about a year). [ Gofer new configurationOf: 'Roassal2'; url: 'http://smalltalkhub.com/mc/ObjectProfile/Roassal2/main/'; loadDevelopment. ] timeToRun inspect. Desktop: 386 s. Notebook: 48 s. HTTP file logging for Zinc

Hello everyone, I want to record everything that goes in or out from our REST API servers, maybe including HTTP payload (JSON mostly). ZnLogEvent seems to have the basic building blocks for logging, but I want to know if there is a package/project that already provides file logging, so I can not only have the logs, but also if the file format is compatible with other http logs I can run traditional web log tools on them, like Webalizer or AWStats. skipping whole class

Is it possible to skip whole class from testing? I could do "self skip" for individual methods, but the problems arise even in setUp so I would like to stop the whole class from being tested. Is that possbile? Thanks, Peter

Hello All :) I am a newbie in Pharo and have started to build my first application i.e. an offline text search application namely searchQuick. You all are welcome to fork the code (https://github.com/jig08/sQuick_new) , try the infancy application and send in suggestions. Currently, I have built the basic structure of the application using Morphs and have a lot to cover on the GUI part. sQ basically returns the list of file titles from the pre-loaded text files present in the resource folder when a string is searched for. I plan to build an accordion widget (https://jqueryui.com/accordion/) or something similiar to view the results. I seek help on the implementation of this part. loading with gofer without network

Hi, I'm trying to load a package (mcz) from the package cache with Gofer. |gofer| gofer := Gofer new repository: MCCacheRepository uniqueInstance; repository: (MCSmalltalkhubRepository owner: 'Seaside' project: 'Grease11'); version: 'Grease-Core-JohanBrichau.94'; disableRepositoryErrors; load As you see, I gave 2 repositories (the first is local, the second one is remote) to Gofer. If you try to execute this code without the network, it will failed! It shouldn't because the mcz is in the package cache. I think it is a bad behavior of Gofer. It does not have to resolve references for ALL the repositories because, at the end, you only use one. I want to change this behavior to only get the first resolved reference (no need to iterate more). If not acceptable, I could only ignore repositories not reachable (disableRepositoryErrors does not work for this use case). Is it ok to change it? Christophe

Hi Ronie, since we switch here from OS X 10.10.2 to 10.10.3, your OpenCL framework doesn't not work anymore ... We crash Pharo everytime we try to use GPU. pharo looses font settings on linux with retina screen

hi, i am running pharo 40614 on linux on a mac with a retina screen. i have not tested this on a normal laptop yet, so i don't know if the retina resolution is the problem or the pharo version i am using. probably a bit of both. the worst issue is that when i restart an image, the font settings are partially lost and reverted to the original size, which is to small to read on such a screen. and restoring the font size requires me to reopen all the affected windows. there are also issues with some widgets not resizing to the full size of the font, making the text only partially readable. and then there are widgets that have the correct size, but the font remains small. and all that is not consistent, sometimes all sizes are correct, sometimes it is a complete mess. pretty much every time i restart after resetting the font size i get different results. it makes pharo practically unusable on this machine, because i am spending to much time fixing fonts, and am not getting any work done. is there some other setting to adjust to the resolution besides selecting a huge font? greetings, martin. -- eKita - the online platform for your entire academic life -- chief engineer eKita.co pike programmer pike.lysator.liu.se caudium.net societyserver.org secretary beijinglug.org mentor fossasia.org foresight developer foresightlinux.org realss.com unix sysadmin Martin BÃ¤hr working in china http://societyserver.org/mbaehr/
