[Pharo-project] sending messages through inspector menus

Hi Could we have a way to send message to objects in the inspectors through the mouse menu. The way to do now is to access the object and them write message and accept them I find that could be useful to authorize some messages to be directly accessible. For instance we have an history object having a collection inst var to store its commands. To empty it we need to assign an empty collection to the var. But if accessible in the menu, it will be easier to do and feel more secure. The history object (parent) could have authorized the emptyCollection message. Maybe we could use pragma for that. Any tips or directions ? I think I'll try on OBTools. CÃ©drick

Hi, I'd like to get your opinion about how we could improve the GUI. I believe that even a few small changes will make a significant difference, especially for new people that come to Pharo. Just the cleaned up world menu is such a relief... Here a three suggestions: Better fonts ---------------- I think the current code font is not a good one and it is too small (for today's screen resolutions). I like for example the font used in TextMate, which is Monaco 12, a monotype font. The page http://www.lowing.org/fonts/ gives some samples for good code fonts. I've tried out the other fonts in the Pharo image like the BitstreamVeraSansMono but they are all very blurry. Just not good enough. I'm not a font expert, so I don't know what the options for a better font are. Better menus ------------------------------- Current problems: - bad organization menus only work when you have learned where something is located - duplicated entries e.g., Appearance is both in the top level world menu and in the submenu Help - useless entries e.g., set font, set style etc. in the context menu are useless since code is never styled - defective entries: e.g., "Make project link" in the context menu does not work Larger windows ------------------------------- The default size of windows is usually too small. Often, after opening a window I have to resize it. For example the hierarchy browser shows only the 5 first classes. Any other ideas what could be improved in the short term? Keyboard navigation would be great, but (unless I am missing something) tab already has a full calendar. As crazy as all the control/shift-tab, control-enter behavior might be, it's what users expect for moving between fields. Note the exceptions for multi-line edit fields, where tab and enter are of interest to the field itself (hence control-, etc.). I recommend grabbing a copy of Dolphin CE to see how its keyboard shortcuts work. Bill Wilhelm K. Hi, as here everithing seems possible, Ihave three points to discuss 1) would people like to have shortcut for accessing the different pane of the browser ? Here is a mapping proposal: Esc to enter leave the mercury panel F1 Category/Package F2 Classes F3 method categories F4 methods ... tab to change the swith (instances ? class for instance) Enter to go to the code pane. What do you think ? Not sure easily feasible though 2) more simple What about having "browse class" (alt + shift + b) and "browse protocol" for an object (alt+shift+p) creates a link to a project but... 3) I think autoparens should go away and shiftEnclose:promoted ParagraphEditor>>shiftEnclose: These are far better, as it allows to remove properly enclosing characters. The only problem Ihad with that is it doesn't work properlyon AZERTY keybords (I had to make some small changes). But maybe Safaraa willreplace ParagraphEditor so... CÃ©drick

CÃ©drick, There is at least use for halos with browsers: figuring out how they were made. At times, I have resorted to see the types of morphs that were ignoring a customization I was trying to enforce. I would not suppress halos unless we have a tool along the lines of the following: http://www.idb.me.uk/idbsnoop.html Of course, one could compromise by toggling halos, perhaps based on the type of system window. Note that since SystemWindow is quite generic, we would either need to add sub-classes, or perhaps better some state to allow the test to work. Does that make any sense? Hi Damien I worked a bit more on this and did the following: in addition to previous version by Damien - remove #command: senders and implementors - remove method references to deleted methods in MessageFinder - remove String>>asHtml, which in turn required to... - remove an etoys related mail message class (FancyMailComposition), which required to - remove some code in EToys (tell a friend feature) Do you want to have a look what I did?
