[Pharo-project] iPhone squeak VM goes to latest Pharo image

On Friday after ESUG I migrated the iPhone VM source code to use the Closure VM logic, this is squeak.app V2.x for the iPHone. I also updated the January era Pharo image to the latest image. If you have a copy of the squeak VM that I build for you and would like to upgrade you need to download the Squeak.2.0.0.app.zip from ftp://ftp.smalltalkconsulting.com/experimental/iPhoneAdHoc/ I note if you have made your VM image writtable via the setting's panel we will launch the new VM with the old writable image versus the new one. If you want to launch the new image you must first delete Squeak from your iPhone, beware that would erase any changes, so use MC to preserve that work. After deleting Squeak.app 1.x from your phone please install the new 2.0.0 version. As always ensure you sync and backup your device before deleting applications. Hello, I am new to Pharo, and so have been perusing the bug database, and reading the recent posts in this list in order to investigate how to become involved in this community.  So far, I am very impressed! and encouraged that such a technically expert and friendly, supportive group is coelescing on this work effort! I have found a report that seems quite interesting, and have done some digging into the issue described here: http://code.google.com/p/pharo/issues/detail?id=207 ( ImageSegment discoverActiveClasses strange error ) and now I have a few questions I was hoping to get feedback on. It seems that, after using this method, some follow-up is required in order to reset the image back to a usable state.  And there are several options as to how to do that: 1) ImageSegment discoverActiveClasses. ImageSegment activeClasses size printString , ' classes were active out of ' , Smalltalk allClasses size printString. - this type of statment order will reset things ok.         2) ImageSegment discoverActiveClasses. ImageSegment  recoverFromMDFault. ImageSegment activeClasses. - it appears you still need the activeClasses method to reset the image (which wasn't entirely clear from the method comments - further comments may be useful here), otherwise there are classes with methodDictionaries that are set to nil. 3) ImageSegment discoverActiveClasses. Smalltalk at: #MDFaultDict put: Dictionary new. ImageSegment  recoverFromMDFaultWithTrace. Smalltalk at: #MDFaultDict. - this sequence of statments will give the user a report of active classes along with a description of how they came to be used. Similar to above o/w. 4)ImageSegment discoverActiveClasses. ImageSegment swapOutInactiveClasses. - there are at least 2 problems with this sequence - a)  initial result is a DNU - ThreadSafeTranscript(Object)>>doesNotUnderstand: #print    b) when you comment out the Transcript print statements to avoid the DNUs you get: ByteString(Object)>errorImproperStore I will be looking further into this issue, but was just wondering, firstly, is this a useful area to be spending time, and secondly, would it be appropriate to start a new bug, or update the old one?  Many thanks for your comments, Sheridan Mahoney

Hello all, I might be having a problem querying a MySQL bit field, and want to try the latest ODBC package; it's been updated once since I built my current image, and there was mention of numeric mishaps, so it might go away. Is there a preferred way to get Monticello to update the package? I am specifically thinking of load vs. merge, but if there is anything else I should be asking, please let me know. Bill

Hi - I have done something to my image and don't know how to fix it. When it opens it maximizes one of the processors and allocates a large amount of RAM to itself. When I attempt to run the Debug > Start profiling all Processes it crashes the vm after I move the mouse to the top of the screen. When I run Process allInstancesDo: [ :p | | rules | rules := ProcessBrowser nameAndRulesFor: p. rules second ifTrue: [ p terminate ] "1=name, 2=safe-to-kill, 3=safe-to-debug" ]. from here: http://wiki.squeak.org/squeak/1799 nothing changes. Printing 'ProcessBrowser new processList' in a workspace gives: a WeakArray(a Process in Delay class>>handleTimerEvent a Process in SystemDictionary>>lowSpaceWatcher a Process in [] in Delay>>wait a Process in WeakArray class>>finalizationProcess a Process in nil a Process in ByteString(String)>>encodeOn: a Process in [] in BlockClosure>>newProcess) And the VM statistics are: uptime 0h8m53s memory 1,055,051,120 bytes old 1,050,497,028 bytes (99.6%) young 83,708 bytes (0.0%) used 1,050,580,736 bytes (99.6%) free 4,470,384 bytes (0.4%) GCs 4,999 (107ms between GCs) full 3 totalling 18,400ms (3.0% uptime), avg 6133.0ms incr 4996 totalling 120,999ms (23.0% uptime), avg 24.0ms tenures 112 (avg 44 GCs/tenure) Are there other things I can do to get it back under control or should I just save everything in some MC repositories and set up a new image? I'm reluctant to do that now because I don't know what I did to create the situation I'm in. Thanks for your help Paul
