Hi Everyone, As far as I can tell, JPEGReadWriter in Pharo 7 doesn't read (or write) the image metadata, e.g. title, keywords, exposure time, etc. Is anyone aware of a package that does? Thanks! Alistair

Pharo 6.0 and 6.1 64 bit freeze on MacMini

Hi, I reverted to 5.0 because Pharo 6.0 and 6.1 64 bit hangs on my Mac Mini with UDH 4K screen (may that has to do with?) with its maiden image (at first start after download when: I resize or go to full screen. Maybe VM problem? my mac Mini metrics: Hardware Overview: Model Name: Mac mini Model Identifier: Macmini6,2 Processor Name: Intel Core i7 Processor Speed: 2,6 GHz Number of Processors: 1 Total Number of Cores: 4 L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB L3 Cache: 6 MB Memory: 4 GB Boot ROM Version: MM61.0106.B1F SMC Version (system): 2.8f0 maybe this problem was already reported, but could find it. Parsing in VW

Microsoft COM

Hi Pablo, At work I managed to remote control Internet Explorer with Excel VBA like this... [1] http://www.automateexcel.com/vba/automate-internet-explorer and went looking for how similar might be achieved from Pharo. IIUC I discovered this would be done via Microsoft's Component Object Model, and then I bumped into your repo... [2] https://github.com/tesonep/pharo-com Could you advise the status and your plans for this? Since I see its only a few months old I've probably stumbled onto it prematurely, but I see no documentation or tests to discover how to use it. So I'll curious whether it makes something like [1] possible? And could you show how that would be done? cheers -ben P.S. For context, at work I automated IE since the intranet document management system (OpenText) does authentication via a javascript function in the browser, which doesn't compute with Microsoft's MSXML.DOMDocument component. So I use IE to do the authentication and grab the raw XML from IE to then stuff it into MSXML.DOMDocument from which I pull the data I need. But I'd love to do it with Pharo instead (if I can get IT to white list it) cheers -ben

Dear community, I am a silent follower of this list. Now, I feel urged to speak up not on a technical, but a community matter. Every village deserves it's fool. And a wise man does not feed the troll (i did, and doing it right now, sorry). But if this fool is about to take over a considerable amount of public control, the community has to stand up against it. So, I put this to you: I frequently research on Smalltalk-related topics (computer scientist, try to devote time to open source dev next to my small enterprise). And more and more, I notice that Google search results show very much on top of the result list contributions by a self-appointed "Mr. Smalltalk" aka R.K.Eng. who excels at SEO and flooding social media. While self-initiatives are a thriving force for open communities, in this case: * one individual is hoging credit and applause, without ever having commited a single line of code, putting himself into focus (without having any profound knowledge; to the contrary: he shows a deep ignorance towards "our" and other languages, throwing around dubious advertisment slogans), * ...is throwing around with wrong claims (pulling off any potentially interested developer), * ...is starting pointless flame wars against other programming languages (again: detrimental to our community) * ...is doing SEO to make Google show his own results before FOSS community or sciences pages. * ...is getting traction (and money) for his own ends (publicity for the self-appointed "Mr. Smalltalk") * ...denies community leadership by merit (Pharo core developers do know, what they have created and where they want to go in the future, and which audience we should target, they don't need a clueless person telling them to "get into TIOBE index", just for example) * is claiming credit for the work, others have done, fostering his own publicity (not the interests of Pharo/VisualWorks etc). Every professional Javascript developer, who is trying Smalltalk the first time, because he/she has read in a post of "Mr. Smalltalk", that it is better, will instantly dismiss Smalltalk and be disappointed. I love Smalltalk (certainly more than JS), but it is detrimental, to throw around with these wrong claims (which in the end are only a self-serving, ego-centric, attention-greedy campaign to promote "Mr. Smalltalk" himself, a total newbie, who claims credit for the work of others). My suggestion: This community is open and inclusive. But we should clarify, that if a single individual repeatedly goes against those, who do the actual work, claims credits, insults people, then this person is not fit to be part of this community. Corrupted fonts in P7 after loading Glamorous Toolkit

Hi - I just noticed that when I loaded the Glamorous toolkit and was playing around, when I went to look in the Pharo menus they are all corrupted (the odd character is some type of glyph). Opening a playground and doing some code completion shows that method names have the same random character glyphed. Anyone else seen this? Is is it something about loading GT? This is on OSX Tim

Pharo 7.0 image size

Ciao, i have a Pharo 7.0 alpha build 1262. I development a Seaside application. The size of the image keeps increasing, without an apparent reason. Starting from 94 MB, now after rebooting and save the image the relative size is 252 MB. How can I understand what is happening? How can I analyze the data to understand who is occupying more and more space? The other day the system generated a warning that in practice said that there was no more space and that image had to be started with a particular value. Some considerations ? Thanks, Dario

I used NautilusClassSelected and NautilusMethodSelected announcements to apply a macro in a given class or method right after the developer clicks on the browser. Something like AbstractNautilusPlugin subclass: #MRNautilusPlugin ... registerTo: aModel aModel announcer weak when: NautilusClassSelected send: #entitySelected: to: self; when: NautilusMethodSelected send: #entitySelected: to: self. Google Protobuf and usage of Slots

Hi, from my point of view the pillars of future services are Google protobuf[1] and gRPC. Protobuf can be used for configuration files[2], tracing/logging[3] and storage[4]. gRPC is built on top-of HTTP2 and is using the protobuf IDL and marshaling. Many projects (etcd, envoy, Google Cloud, ...) provide a gRPC based API (and some automatically map this from REST to gRPC) already and I would like to build clients and servers in Pharo. My plan of action is to start with a protobuf compiler/model and then look into binding the gRPC C implementation to Pharo. I have started with gokr's Protobuf code on Smalltalkhub and defined base types and a Slot and could use some help to structure this more nicely. The code is at: https://github.com/zecke/pharo-protobuf and I could use some comments/review of how to use Slots in a significant way (add "type" validation on write, constraint checks, builder pattern?). Given a definition like: syntax = "proto2"; package foo; enum Color { RED = 0; GREEN = 1; BLUE = 2; } message MyMessage { optional Color color = 1; } And an encoded binary message of #[8 2] the following can: PBTestMessage materializeFrom: #[8 2] readStream decode and set the color field. Proper handling of mandatory and repeated fields are missing and decoding the other values, nested messages... :) Looking forward to have some eyes on the code. holger [1] A simple IDL to define structs/enums with marshaller/materializer for a binary protocol, JSON (and yaml). [2] Without having to write a XML/JSON schema and getting validation from the IDL. [3] Many of us log structured to text, then have something like logstash to re-parse, regexp it and dump it into ElasticSearch. With protobuf we can have plain objects end to end for logging. [4] We have FUEL so this is less interesting for us than others but quite interesting if you are mixing Pharo with other implementation languages.

So the zeroconf image I launched yesterday morning crashed at 10:30pm last night. So I will try leaving the same image open again but not full screen (and see if thats the difference). But this is honestly a trivial example, and Iâm surprised it crashes so easily (5 or 6 times, so every day this week) - As mentioned, Iâm on OSX HighSierra I get a zero conf image (which I believe is the 32 bit version?) curl https://get.pharo.org | bash Then I run: ./pharo-ui Pharo.image eval " Metacello new baseline: 'Exercism'; repository: 'github://macta/pharo-exercism:master/dev/src'; load. How to write out simple Json?

I am stumped about how to write out some simple json (for a config file). I didn't think I need Neo, and STONJSON would be fine but it seems like creating items like: { 'id'-> self id. 'name' -> self name } gives an error about the association. I think you have to do: { ('id'-> self id) asDictionary. ('name' -> self name) asDictionary } everywhereâ¦. But when I switch over to NeoJsonWriter it also complains about Assocations too. I just want a simple output like: { "id" : 12, "name" : "timâ } I thought it was simple to do this? I've just been caught out with Intervals - why can't you do: 5 to: 1 do: [ :i | Transcript show: i printString] (eg a negative interval)? if you want to iterate down a series of numbers do you really have to do: 5 to: 1 by: -1 do: [â¦ I always assumed that if x > y the step was automatically -1 (but its not). I asked on Discord - and someone pointed out that if you use variables it could be ambiguous - but is it really? I donât know if other smalltalks do it this way (I vaguely recall Dolphin going down, but not sure). Either way the Interval comment should mention this - and Iâll correct it when I get the wisdom of the crowd here. Tim

Running Pharo under Ubuntu (Windows Subsystem for Linux)

Thanks to Cyril who told me it was possible, I got Pharo 7 Unix running under the Ubuntu 18 that's part of Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) in Windows 10. It's not a VM VirtualBox. Why is #findString: in accessing?

I always struggle (even after years of casually using smalltalk) to find the String methods that do the heavy lifting (and are comparable to other languages). The methods are normally there, but they often have names that donât compare well with other languages. I think that what doesnât help is the categorisation of methods in String - for example - if I want to do some searching in a String - why is #findString: in âaccessingâ - I totally didnât think to look in there. To be honest, I really wanted a protocol called âsearchingâ - but its not there? I find the protocols in the system to be pretty bad in all honesty. Its a good idea, but I donât think its clear on whether its protocol, or category. And if the former - where are the tools to help ensure things conform to a protocol? If the latter - where are the useful, commonly used categories? Are there any plans to do anything in this area - or is it just a lump it scenario? Tim

If you convert a Dictionary with numbers as keys it will produce not valid JSON [1], since all object keys must be quoted. E.g. NeoJSONWriter toString: (Dictionary with: 1->'foo'). or (Dictionary with: 1->'foo') asJson Should the library generate quoted keys? Seaside's WAJsonCanvas is manual, so it is up to the developer to render the object properly, but NeoJSON does it automatically. In Javascript this will throw a syntax error: > JSON.parse('{1: "foo"}') And this would generate a quoted key when serialized: > JSON.stringify({1: "foo"}) > {"1": "foo"} So my question is: should the library quote whatever you put as key in order to produce valid JSON syntax? Teapot or Zinc adding extra node to JSON POST

Hi, Using Teapot (which uses Zinc) i found something i do not know if it is a standard or done on purpose or a bug. A Teapot service (POST) accept a JSON entry. In the client the 'body' is set with the JSON. In the server the ZnRequest contents insert a JSON node 'body' to the original JSON. The original JSON POST is: {name: "John", age: 31, city: "New York"} At server ZnRequest contents JSON is: {"body":{name: "John", age: 31, city: "New York"}} Is this done on purpose by Zinc ? I try to find if it is a standard in JSON communications but with no luck yet ! NeoJSON mapping question

Hi, How to set a path to JSON value in the mapping definition ? I mean i have a simple object with and instance variable but the value of this inst var is deep inside the JSON. mapping mapInstVar: #locator to: 'locator'. This fail because 'locator' is not in the first JSON level. Is possible to do something like: mapping mapInstVar: #locator to: 'booking.vars.locator'. I already tried and fail. The confusing state of SUnit

Forgive me father, for I have sinnedâ¦ but when I try to right good tests, that fail in a way I can understand them it seems that SUnit doesnât want to help meâ¦ Maybe I am missing something, but in 2019 it should be easy to write tests - particularly when we want people to contribute to adding more? So when I want to right a test to assure that Iâve thrown an exception with the right message, why is it so hard (in the core image)? Am I missing something obvious? My example model is supposed to throw a DomainException with a message indicating that the strings :are of different lengthsâ - I search Sunit and hit: #should: raise: whoseDescriptionDoesNotInclude: description: Awesome, so it fails - but does it make it easy to know what damn string I gotâ¦.. nooooo that would be too easy? Its almost impossible to easily see what happened the way it works. Instead I have to write: self should: [ hammingCalculator distanceStrand1: 'AATG' strand2: 'AAA' ] raise: DomainError withExceptionDo: [ :ex | self assert: ex messageText equals: 'left and right strands must be of equal length' ]. And god forbid if I want to just ensure that the beginning of my error message is correct? Why do we make this so hard? I know we donât want to pollute the image, but testing is important, it should be easy for obvious cases and it should be more built in and less obscure. Is there something built in that makes this easier? Do I really have to load in more libraries for the easy cases? Tim

[Parsing XML] Error calling Shout

Hi, all. I am currently using the AWS S3 plugin to get a list of buckets available. This call sends back a pile of XML.. The XML is coming back valid, but I am getting back something like: XMLDocumentHighlightDefaults errorâ¦. and inside this error, SHTextStylerST80 new <- where ânewâ is being sent to nil.. It looks like SHTextStylerST80 is part of the Shout package, but I cannot get shout to install on 7.01.. anyone have any ideas? Windows 64bit, long filename issue but after a second load, how to categorise and report this?

We noticed a weird problem when testing the pharo exercism project. When loading on Windows10 in a fresh 64bit image with the following evaluate in the playground: Metacello new baseline: 'Exercism'; repository: 'github://exercism/pharo-smalltalk:master/dev/src'; load. The project seemed to load correctly (but we seemed to hit an issue with an http submit giving a 404 error - which weirdly works in 32bit and OSX 64/32). Anyway - the real question here is that when trying to reproduce this in a second fresh 64bit image 2 users now have reported getting the long filename error: LGit_GIT_EEXISTS: Failed to stat file 'C:/Users/sam/Documents/Pharo/images/exercism-test-run-7.0-32...stance/testRaiseUnexpectedMessageWhenTooMuchMessages.st': The filename or extension is too long. And the second user got the same but with a different filename: ruleRBUtlitiesMethodsRuleV1FalsePositve.st I know there is a long standing problem with Windows and file path lengths - but why would it work the first time and then subsequently fail in fresh installs? Is something being cached on windows that isnât on other platforms? (Writing this - Iâm wondering if there is that shared pharo Iceberg setting for Share repos that might be implicated?) Also - given Exercism is in Tonel format and those files arenât in exercism, and in fact Iâm struggling to find where they are defined (my images donât have them) - there is something very weird going on. I wonder if we have another error that is masking all of this? Ultimately my question is - where is the Pharo issue that is tracking this problem? Iâve seen it mentioned lots of times here, but canât see anything in the issues that I can tack the above onto? What does the Package and Sub-Package comment do?

Hi - I notice that you can sort of put comments on packages - but Iâm not sure if this is working or if its supposed to work? When I type something it seems to create and extra Manifest tag, and then the comment that I type seems to be the same for the package and all of its sub tags? Is this a work in progress? Should Calypso even show a comment for the tags (or is it read only for them - as its the parent). Iâm just not clear on what it does, and whether I can programmatically add stuff to it or not? (I was thinking for exercism to store exercise information there - but maybe I will stick to the test class comment) Tim

However, the best way to create an instance of sparta canvas is to send extent: message.'' !! How to test a new Iceberg baseline?

How does one go about testing an Iceberg/metacello baseline? Two parts to this actually - I want to check one under my control - and am wondering if there is a lint checker or some way to tell me what it will load (without having to check it in and try. Or if you do this - can you test loading from a branch? Similarly - if I want to try improving a baseline in another project - is there an easy way to do this (in this case, I canât really check it in - or I suppose I can fork all the dependencies and put them all in branches - but then how do convince each part of the chain to load from my forkâ¦ this sounds like a world of pain). Embedding object properties in NeoJSON mappings

Hi all (again), As part of writing the port (and adaptation to use Zinc and NeoJSON), a CouchDB JSON-REST API, now I find something I don't know how to solve using NeoJSON mappings. All objects you store in CouchDB at a particular URI are saved as "Documents", so if you save a dictionary with keys "name", "height", "c" to "/people/1234" , when you query "people/1234" you get the keys of the saved dictionary PLUS to extra keys called _id and _rev. Then when you query (GET) back the document you get a JSON like this: {"_id": ..., "_rev": ..., "name": ..., "height":...,} My Idea is that I can wrap any object serializable as JSON within aDocument, but then if I define CouchDocument class>>#neoJsonMapping: mapper as: mapper for: self do: [ :mapping | mapping mapAccessor: #id to: '_id'. mapping mapAccessor: #revision to: '_rev'. mapping mapAccessor: #class to: '_class' ]. I have no way to "flatten"/"merge" anObject within aDocument. I would expect something like mapper for: self do: [ :mapping | mapping mapAccessor: #id to: '_id'. mapping mapAccessor: #revision to: '_rev'. mapping mapAccessor: #class to: '_class' mapping embed: [:object | object whatToEmbed] ]. Of course this is awkward, because if I need to read it back, the "extraction" of the embeded properties needs to know which belongs to which and more importantly , what to instantiate! Of course I can do it manually without using NeoJSON (It's already being done [1]) , but I like when different libraries things fit naturally together :) Am I stretching it too much? :) Regards, [1] Currently the writing is done manually and the refresh (which is also a GET) does the following: CouchDocument>>#refresh " Update this Document to the latest revision " | response | response := self information. Streams for FileReference in Pharo 7

Hello everyone I am trying to use Pharo 7 for my project and I noticed that most of my streams related code does not work anymore. Reason is that API for streams received from writeStream of FileReference changed and I think it changed for the worse in my case, because << does not properly handle any other objects than strings anymore. In both Pharo 6 and 7 I can write String streamContents: [ :s | s << 'hello' << 42 << $! ]. and get 'hello42!'. I can write in Pharo 6 but cannot in Pharo 7 'hello.txt' asFileReference writeStreamDo: [ :s | s << 'hello' << 42 << $! ] In Pharo 6, I get same result in both examples (written to the file in second case of course), but in Pharo 7, the second example results in exception because << does not work with anything other than strings, so it seems I have to manually convert everything to strings. This change to streams seems to me like a setback for 2 reasons: 1) API amongst streams is no longer consistent in this case 2) streams for files lost useful functionality and to make my project compatible with Pharo 7, I have to make lots of effort to make my code uglier and longer I would like to ask for the reason of this change and whether is there anything that can be done with it. Partition/Sync ready databases for Pharo?

I have the requirement that an app that I'm prospecting must be able to work offline and synchronize changes once the connection is restored. I want to avoid having to write "sync" logic manually. Is anybody using Pharo with a database that supports automatic synchronization (replicas?) like the one provided by Firebase (Realtime Sync or Firestore)? I rather use PostgreSQL/SQLite locally and sync with a "central" DB, because I'm familiar with SQL/RDBMS, but I'm open to options. Regards, Esteban A. Maringolo

Hey, all.. I found my issue.. I need to be running in daemon mode.. i was running with &, but as soon as my connection lets go, the app dies.. I tried using daemon tools, but it looks like the site stays up for one second, and a new PID is generated.. Anyone have any hints on how people are doing this lately? Iceberg Custom SSH Keys

Hi, Does Iceberg support a pair of key generated with PuTTY as RSA ? I can Push local changes with TortoiseGit client. But inside Pharo i get "Iceberg Authentication Error" when doing a Push. Hi all, I'm doing this and it works ZnClient new method: #PUT; url: 'http://127.0.0.1:5984/baseball/2'; contents: (NeoJSONWriter toString: { 'foo' -> 'baz'} asDictionary); contentType: ZnMimeType applicationJson; execute. But if try to use a contentWriter it fails because it can't determine the contentType of the entity. ZnClient new method: #PUT; url: 'http://127.0.0.1:5984/baseball/2'; "contentType: ZnMimeType applicationJson;" contentWriter: [ :entity | NeoJSONWriter toString: entity ]; contents: { 'foo' -> 'baz'} asDictionary; execute. If I uncomment the "contentType:" message send it complains about setting the content type before setting the entity, which makes sense but baffles me. My Idea is to directly pass the object as contents, and let the content writer deal with how it's going to be serialized on the request (a JSON string, for the most part). Although the first expression works, I know it can be done better, but I can't manage to get it working :) Thanks, ps: I also wonder by there aren't #bePut, #bePost, #beDelete, etc. convenience methods instead of passing the HTTP method as a symbol :) Esteban A. Trying to understand Developing with Pharo, Deploying with Gemstone/s

I have an app that is ready to deploy to alpha. I usually do this by creating a script that builds a minimal pharo image, and run that on a cloud server. I then use TelePharo to make any live tweaks that need to happen, and something like: ./pharo Pharo.image "/run/the/script" to keep run cron jobs, etc. I would like to start using Gemstone/s. I got GsDevKithome up and running, with no problems, but I am having a little bit of trouble figuring out how to proceed. I get what tODE is doing, but I donât get how to do the things I normally do: - I got Seaside installed in the image, but I need several other packages in my install: JSON, Soup, AWS S3, etc. How do I go about installing those? - How do I install my main package? Itâs in an Iceberg project. - How do I update my Iceberg project while itâs live? I think those questions will get me into beta pretty quickly. Hi, We have in our server Gitolite instance running. >From Pharo System browser we commit changes to local path and with TortoiseGit we upload to the remote. So far so good but on Iceberg Repository Status i see "Detached Working Copy". What is the meaning of the message ? The the remote is no been "handle" by Pharo ? I was browsing some of the Pharo issues (always worth doing) - and noticed an interesting one about Test results reporting and pluralisation (https://github.com/pharo-project/pharo/issues/2578) In it, I hadn't noticed String>>asPluralBasedOn: before (and judging from many messages in the image, many others hadn't either). I'm fixing something similar for a refactoring bug and can use this technique there (although from memory, it comes with a health warning as if ever we want to internalise the messages in Pharo, this will need a different approach). However we are probably a distance from doing that - so cleaning up what we have is a good start. Anyway I was curious if there is something to help with messages like: âThere is 1 occurrence of {1}â vs âThere are many occurrences of {1}â, which Iâd like to write something like: âThere â, (âis 1 â, âare many â) pick: result size, âoccurrenceâ asPluralBasedOn: result size, â â, result printString. It is not clear to me what the semantics of such a selector would be. Consider this example: t := [:x | x copy == x]. a := t value: 1.0e38. b := t value: 1.0e308. What do you expect a and b to be? GNU Smalltalk: a=true, b=true. My Smalltalk, 32-bit or 64-bit: a=true, b=true. Squeak/Pharo, 32-bit: a=false, b=false. Squeak/Pharo, 64-bit: a=true, b=false. Squeak/Pharo, after a patch: a=true, b=true. There are two quite different reasons why x copy == x might be true: * x is immutable (including its parts), and can be thought of as a mathematical value, so that there is no need to copy it Examples: every kind of number, characters, booleans, immutable collections, block closures * x is a way of accessing a unique resource, and should not be copied, so making copy the identity is a safety measure. How do you easily re-categorise methods in Calypso?

Hi - Iâm scratching my head over how to easily re-caegorise methods in calypso? Iâve overridden some methods in subclasses and picked up the wrong category (which the critic is slapping me for). But when I click on the method - I canât drag it to the new category, so if I click on the pencil in the status line (or the current category name - not sure why they are independently clickable?) - it shows me a rather unhelpful list of protocols. Iâm not sure where this list comes from as it doesnât seem to include any of the protocols that are already in the class? (and those which I want to use?). So I have to start typing âaccesâ and can click on accessingâ¦ Am I missing a simple trick - or is this an area that needs some work?

Now we have a commercial project and we are going to use Pharo :) So we have some general questions. 1) Which version of Pharo to use in a production deployment 6.1 or 7.0 ? 2) We need a local database to Pharo app, which open source database is better to use with Pharo: mysql, postgree or .... In term of packages for Pharo. There is https://guillep.github.io/DBXTalk/ but i do not know if is up to date. 3) There is any documentation about deployment and maintenance for a Pharo + Seaside app ? Hello, some classes, like Symbols or SmallIntegers, shares identity of value instances in the whole image (I may say it wrong), so: 1 == 1 copy. [true] #aaa == #aaa copy. [true] all other classes not, like Strings, Objects etc., so: 'aaa' == 'aaa' copy. [false] Is there any test method (maybe on the class side) I could ask for this (isXXX)? Thanks! pf

Hi, I'm updating the the baseline of PharoJS to use the zinc websockets from the github repo https://github.com/svenvc/zinc. I want to load package Zinc-WebSocket-Core. So, in BaselineOfPharoJS>>#baseline: I've defined spec baseline: 'ZincHTTPComponents' with: [ spec loads: #('Zinc-WebSocket-Core'); repository: 'github://svenvc/zinc' ]. However, for some reason I get Zinc-WebSocket-Tests loaded. Dale, I tried to test SETT to migrate a Package from Store to our repo. But it fails while initializing the git repository. I set the destination config to `isNewRepository := false`, then it works as expected. I'm testing it against the Cincom Public Repository, which being remote and full of code (and garbage), limiting by date isn't useful if I can't filter by a particular package name/pattern (I couldn't find such option). In any case, it's a helpful tool to ease the migration of code. Regards, Esteban A. Hi, I am looking into the RB pattern language for refactoring and I am having trouble matching and replacing non-trivial pattern. Given the following excerpt, I want to match "b shape <rest>." and replace it with "b shape: [ :x | x <rest> ]" b shape circle size: 15; color: (Color veryLightGray alpha: 0.4); if: [ :value | toBeRed includes: value ] fillColor: Color red. How can I do this? I tried using "b shape ``@messages", but this only matches "b shape circle". Using "b shape `message `;middle; `;last" for some reason then also matches the following, which I think it should not: b edges moveBehind; connectToAll: [ :v | v \\ 20 ~~ 0 ifTrue: [ Array with: v + 1 with: v + 20 ] ifFalse: [ Array with: v + 20 ] ]. There seems not be too much documentation about the pattern language, only found tests, some short help description from RB and Yuriy's MatchTool. How can I match the node correctly? Cheers, Manuel

I have been moving all my external and internal Pharo code to git/tonel/7 and on multiple occasions I have been pleasantly surprised about the functionality and performance of Iceberg. Basically, it just works. Finally, Pharo code lives in standard open source and commercial repositories (git, GitHub, Bitbucket, ...), without losing anything. Iceberg working with forks - can it be easier?

Hi guys - Iâve spent a few hours scratching my head trying to understand why some of my Pull Requests to a project I had forked kept showing my previous commits when I thought I was all caught up. It suddenly dawned on me, that when I had forked, and then done some work and then submitted a PR, and then applied it upstream that my fork is now no longer in sync with its upstream counterpart. Having not done this in ages, it took me a while to then realise I have to do some git stuff to get it back in sync e.g. (and I think Iâve got this right) git fetch upstream (or whatever name you gave it) Git checkout master Git merge upstream/master So I guess my question is - wouldnât it be helpful if this was a command in Iceberg? It seems quite common to fork a project (I think this is still recommended for pharo itself isnât it?) - and then at some point you need to catchup with that origin again? Or am I missing something? I guess lots of stuff can go wrong - but if it does - youâd still get the same problems on the command line. It just seems that for normal situations - it would be handy to run this straight in Pharo. Thoughts from the git experts? Tim

How to uncache Commander menu items

I was going to write this question - but Denis pinged me on Discord - however I thought I would lob this into the list in case someone else hits the problem and is searching for it. (Maybe I should stick this in Calypso or Commander faq). My problem was that I had built a sub menu in Calypso and specified the order of the menu items as described in the docs. packageContextMenuActivation <classAnnotation> ^ CmdContextMenuActivation byItemOf: ClyExercismMenuGroup order: self contextMenuOrder for: ClyTaggedClassGroup asCalypsoItemContext However when I went to add some icons and change the ordering I was finding that my menu wasnât updating. There are 2 solutions (one better than the other). The brute force way is: CmdContextMenuActivation resetCache. How do you avoid loading master code which is indirectly referenced by a version in the baseline?

For test and deployment, I have to be sure that I know exactly which versions I load and I have to be sure to be able to load exactly the same code again. I do not speak from my projects but from the projects I use. I found myself asking people again and again to set tags in their projects and being surprised again and again by changed code even though I am trying to load versions (with versions I mean NOT #stable or #master but like v2.2.2). The reason for this problem I then have, is that often in baselines with version numbers (e.g. v2.2.2) other projects are referenced but as master. So in consequence, I load version but get master from another project which is referenced indirectly. For me, that this is not good at all. I was wondering that this seems not to be a problem for others. I found out that I can put a lock in my baselines preLoadDoIt for those indirectly referenced projects. Examlpe Artefact v1.0.1 https://github.com/pharo-contributions/Artefact/blob/v1.0.1/src/BaselineOfA… loads github://zweidenker/Units/src (which is master). I found a solution for this: In the preLoadDoIt of my baseline I lock Units to a certain commit. preLoadDoIt Metacello new baseline: 'Units'; repository: 'github://zweidenker/Units:98d5a3d/src'; lock. This solves my problem in this example. Disadvantage is that I have to analyze everything which is loaded from the projects I use and create a lock for it. Questions: 1.) Wouldn't it make sense to have some mechanism, perhaps in Rowan then, where I can say that a project which has a number can only reference other projects with numbers? This would avoid the whole problem 2.) How do others solve this problem? addendum: I do not speak about project versions which are in development, here #stable or master are great features. Hi Albrecht, I am sorry that I cannot check it right now, but it may be that ConfigurationOfOSProcess needs to be updated. The #ifNotNilDo: problem was fixed by Thierry Goubier in July 2017, so perhaps you are using an out of date version. I'm asking because I look around to see if there is a project usable as a starting point of a small web content management module for seaside (nothing too complicated / fancy). Hi, While I'm migrating Grafoscopio to Pharo 7 I get a deprecation warning telling me that I need to change the previous code for choosing a file from the UI, but now when I proceed as advised (using |chooseExistingFileReference: title extensions: exts path: path|). It returns a |FileReference| but all the paths are referred to the place where the running image is located, instead of the place where the selected file is located. Should epicea help me recover changes in a system crash?

Hi - Iâve got mixed experiences with epicea - having had a few image seg faults recently its presented some of my changes and let me recover them. However just now, I had been working for an hour and my whole laptop went black (and then had the apple logo). I took the opportunity to apply the latest HighSierra updates (it has been a while) - but when I relaunched my image - epicea detected missing code however what it shows me is nothing like the changes I had recently made - it just showed me a merge change? Is it possible that if Iâm on the wrong branch - it wonât show me changes I made recently? I find Iâm kind of missing the old changes text file (which we say we are getting rid of) as at least it let me see an historic account of what I had done - as now things are a bit all of over the place (do-its you have to find in the playground history) and epicea is supposed to show the rest - execpt it doesnât appear to do so? Calypso documentation? Or understanding menu building

Is there any documentation on Calypso application contexts? I am trying to add a menu item to a package tag (the bit underneath a package - which I often call a sub-package). Iâve specified: ^CmdContextMenuActivation byItemOf: ClyQueryMenuGroup for: RPackage asCalypsoItemContext But that puts my menu on the package and not the tag - and if I use the inspect extra menu in calypso, I get what looks to be something that could help me determine what I want but Iâm struggling to understand what ClyTaggedClassGroup does, and what a context is all about. Has anyone else played around with this at all? Ideally I want to have a menu appear on all the tags underneath a particular package - and possibly including that package (or maybe not - I havenât decided as I want to try it in the wild). While Iâm at it - I have quite understood how to create submenuâs either - as Iâd like to have several commands all as sub items of a menu item âExercismâ. Tim

Pharo Image with Seaside dies without any clues

Hi, all. My seaside image seems to run for an indeterminate amount of time here and there, then just stops running without writing to PharoDebug. How do I go about debugging the application crash? Is there another log somewhere? When I run the game and click on any square, I get: The method BlBaseAnimation>>#startOn: called from MgCardElement>>#onFlippedFace has been deprecated. Use BlElement>>#addAnimation: The tutorial is out of sync. How can I proceed? Is there another way to learn how to use Bloc?

Pragma "only for place of definition", is there one?

Hi! I'd just like to know if there is some pragma (eg. <onlyForMe>) which would say to a (class-level) method only to use the code in the case self is method definition class, otherwise just delegate to super. I only see it useful in class-side `initialize` method, as in: Foo class >> initialize self == Foo ifTrue: [ registry := Dictionary new ]. ^ super initialize would be Foo class >> initialize <onlyForMe> registry := Dictionary new Asking because I look for a way to easily subclass JS classes in Amber and such pragma would be useful in such cases, and since Amber treats Pharo as a reference, asking for the name of the pragma if there is one. How do I find the RPackageTag of a class?

Iâm trying to understand how RPackage and RPackageTag work in Pharo7? It seems different than Pharo6 at least with Nautilus (vs Calypso) - as previously the Nautilus UI gave me the RPacakgeTag, and I could just work with that. Calypso doesnât seem to give me the tag object, but if I have a known class and I want to know its RPackageTag I canât see how you do it? It all seems rather messyâ¦. I can ask a class for its category - which just gives me a symbol of the form âmypackage-tagnameâ, and if I ask a class for its package, it will give me an RPackage(myPackage) - but that RPackage has a set of RPackageTags which just use the tagname (so not prefixed with "mypackage-â)? So am I really supposed to split the category name on â-â myself, and then select the correct RPackageTag? If I look at the RPackageTag tests - they all seem to use hard coded values and so donât really show you how you deal with the question above? It really seems quite messy? I naively thought that if I wanted a browser extension to deal with a selected package tag - and file out some classes in that tag (for exercism) - I could easily get the RPackageTag from any class and then use it? Stability of Pharo 7 vs 6?

Iâm not sure if this is born out by others - but Iâm finding that Pharo 7 is a bit less stable than Pharo 6 - Iâm seeing quite a few seg-faults where the vm dies and terminates - both when the image is left running for a while, but also in fresh images where I do an Iceberg load of my projects. Iâve also seen a lot of weird things like corrupted fonts and keyboard focus/cursor keys not working properly. >From memory - I saw a lot less of this in Pharo 6 when I first moved to it. Possibly my usage is a bit different (although Iâm not sure) - but in all the cases above Iâm using OSX (HighSierra - so the same Mac OS as Pharo 6) - with the 64bit vm and running full screen. One thing that seems to help (but this is an early empirical observation) - if I save my image to a new name - this seems to help. So Iâm wondering if there might be something in the build process that has changed and is causing some sort of instability? I havenât done this long enough to really comment - but from all of the above, having a Pharo.1.image seemed to stop my problems. Possibly Iâve been unlucky - but of 7 images Iâve used in the last 2 weeks - 5 of them have had issues. I did notice that half of these images were the rc1 build 1436 setup (as I hadnât noticed that the blessed 7.0 stable image has a different version number (previously, the last builds in PL Pharo 7 development - was the stable version - unless work then went forward for a Pharo 7.1. I liked to nab the dev version so that I know the build number to report it. I now see the about Pharo in the image also lists this number). Also some of my images were retrieved via zeroConf in the terminal (again, not sure if this makes a difference - but did that a lot with P6 too). This isnât a complaint per se - as we need to move the platform forward and forge new approaches. So I really mention it to try and help diagnose the issues - or possibly understand if Iâm doing something weird. Tim

Hi all I installed seaside + Bootstrap from the Â« Catalog Browser Â», following the tips at http://smalltalkhub.com/#!/~TorstenBergmann/ I run Pharo 7 64bits on MacOS. The demo doesnât react to the mouse clicks. In fact Firefox debugger showed an incompatibility between Bootstrap and JQuery versions : The JQuery Pharo library is 3.3.1 : Is it possible to correct this just by using an older library of JQuery (if I can find one)?
