[Pharo-project] Question on recursive structures
by Viktor Kerkez Jan. 20, 2010

Jan. 20, 2010

Hi, Since this is my first post on the list, first I want to thank you all for the great job you're doing on Pharo :) It was a real revelation when I discovered it :) Now to the question: I'm reading the Pharo by Example, and came to this part: The problem with deepCopy is that it will not terminate when applied to a mutually recursive structure: a1 := { 'harry' }. a2 := { a1 }. a1 at: 1 put: a2. a1 deepCopy â! ... does not terminate! (Pharo actually get stuck at the step: a1 at: 1 put: a2. but that's not the question :) ) 1. Isn't this behaviour (the complete environment get stuck and there is no way to unfreeze it) considered a bug? I mean the environment shouldn't let you shoot yourself in the foot (at least not so easily). Actually the same behaviour can be created just doing: [true] whileTrue: []... 2. Shouldn't Pharo recognize recursive structures in some way? I'm asking because I'm coming from a Python world, which is very similar to smalltalk in some manners and I'm trying to make a big picture comparison in my head. 1. I know that this doesn't really compares to Pharo which is a graphical environment, but in python you can always hit Ctrl-C and break the statements that block... >>> while True: ... pass ... ^CTraceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> KeyboardInterrupt >>> Shouldn't the UI thread always be responsive? 2. And Python recognizes recursive structures: >>> a = [] >>> a [] >>> a.append(5 ... KeyboardInterrupt >>> a = [] >>> a [] >>> a.append(5) >>> a [5] >>> a.append(a) >>> a [5, [...]] >>> a[0] 5 >>> a[1] [5, [...]] >>> a[1][1][1][1][0] 5 >>> Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to start a language war :) I wouldn't got to page 171 if I'm not really interested in Smalltalk :-D I'm just trying to get a clearer vision if these are some things that are there for some reason (design decision), or they are just not yet implemented, or they cannot be implemented for some other reasons? Thank you in advance for your time :), Viktor

[Pharo-project] Polymorph final
by Gary Chambers Jan. 20, 2010

Jan. 20, 2010

Nearly the last version on SqueakSource. Polymorph-Widgets-gvc.101.mcz. I seem to have lost some fixes for multiFormFillStyle (oddity with pressed control buttons...). Let me know if there are any merge problems. Adds OverflowRowMorph to browser switches/button-bar. Regards, Gary

[Pharo-project] After OB, compare to current version uses old diff
by Mariano Martinez Peck Jan. 20, 2010

Jan. 20, 2010

Hi: If you take a PharoCore image, and browse the editions of a class, then select an older one, and then select "compare to current", you see the differences using the "new" diff, the same that we use in MC. However, after installing OB in a core image, it uses the "old" version. I am not sure that change is due to OB, but at least it seems. I checked in Preferences but I didn't find anything. Any hint how to put new diff again after installing OB ? Thanks! Mariano

Hi all, i'm looking for a XMLRPC client/server implementation for Pharo. I found an implementation for Squeak that look a bit outdated: http://www.squeaksource.com/XMLRPC.html Anyone using this one ? Hi folks: does someone know what is this method for ? In my case, it has included the message saveImageSegments which I rename it to saveImageSegments: So...what should I do ? I put saveImageSegments: instead of saveImageSegments or I just remove it from there? Thanks Mariano

[Pharo-project] AddMethodRefactoring>>preconditions
by Fernando olivero Jan. 20, 2010

Jan. 20, 2010

Lukas, i stumbled upon a strange behavior using the refactoring engine. When adding a method, the precondition checks if the class or any super class defines the method to be added. It must only ask if the class directly defines it. The fix is AddMethodRefactoring>>preconditions | selector method | method := RBParser parseMethod: source onError: [:string :position | ^RBCondition withBlock: [self refactoringError: 'The sources could not be parsed']]. selector := method selector. selector isNil ifTrue: [self refactoringError: 'Invalid source.']. ^(RBCondition definesSelector: aSelector in: aClass : selector in: class) Could you please modfify this in the package you maintain? Of course, only if you think this fix is correct! Saludos, Fernando

Actually, this is exactly what I asked when people suggested to use Lukas' OB.

Dear list, I am trying to compile a list of all source/object search abilities in Pharo (and other Smalltalkices). So far I got - Senders of - Implementers of - References to - Mercury search bar of OB - Code search/rewrite of RB - MethodFinder - PointerFinder certainly there is more out there. Any references and hints are welcome. cheers, AA
