Catalog statistics (Who know this projects?)
So⦠I took a couple of minutes to do a small list of project description status:
From a total of 379 projects currently in the catalog, just 115 have a description and/or keywords associated. Which means 264 are mysterious projects nobody can guess what are they about.
I was thinking most of this projects would be in Unsorted (or Pharo 3), but I found that many are also on Pharo 5 and 4â¦. which is frankly unacceptable :) Even very important projects like Seaside or Garage and Glorp are not documented. catalog just catalogs projects in the MetaRepos you project can live where he wants, but configuration needs to be copied into MetaRepoForPharoXX thatâs how always was, and thatâs what catalog shows :) Esteban

I happen to know quite a number of projects. So, what's the best path to follow to put a description in them? Editing configs and saving to MetaRepo is not an issue but will put my name all over upon save, which is not really nice to people making the work. I can spend a couple hours on it this week. Please advise. Phil On Tue, Jan 5, 2016 at 5:14 PM, Esteban Lorenzano <estebanlm@gmail.com> wrote:

But they most probably will get overwritten in the future. The original 'source' configs need to be changed.

I wouldn't mind if you put your name in any of my repos, please let me know if you need write access. I tried to copy a Config to the MetaRepoForPharo40 and got a MCPermissionDenied error. My user and pass are okay because I could upload the package to my STHub repo before. Regards! Esteban A. Maringolo

Esteban,
Maybe you could extend the job that generates the catalog with a log file that describes what goes wrong and how and then also publish that ?
I have a log, but it will not have much information that you can use. For example, in case of Alex problem, it would say: no catalog methods found. Witch is more or less what we already know :) Esteban

Hello Esteban How did you produce the list below last year? I am interested for Pharo 6.0/6.1 to have a) a list of all projects in the catalog _with_ a description b) a list of all projects in the catalog _without_ a description Regards Hannes On 1/5/16, Esteban Lorenzano <estebanlm@gmail.com> wrote:

Many thanks to Esteban for starting this effort and to everyone who has contributed. As a newish member of the community, the lack of such descriptions creates a huge barrier. Not so much that I need to know what "FlyingMongoose" does, but the presence of so many documented projects in the catalog makes me feel like I must be "missing" a big part of the Pharo picture. It gives an unwelcoming face to one of the most welcoming communities I've encountered in the software world. So, extra encouragement to those pitching in and thanks again. ----- Glenn Hoetker ghoetker@me.com http://hoetker.faculty.asu.edu -- View this message in context: http://forum.world.st/Catalog-statistics-Who-know-this-projects-tp4869315p49... Thanks for the encouragement. I would love to have a crawler that automatically validates distribution where projects available in the distribution are validated (tests green, ...) but we always find something more important to do. Unfortunately making something beginner friendly is A LOT of work, its indeed super important but for most people, which is logical, getting the code to work first is the no 1 priority. Indeed as a beginner you dont see even 0.00001% of Pharo capabilities. This is why I started a wiki to expose some of the hidden corners of Pharo because if you follow the mailing list you will find a ton of things that you are not aware of and that applies to me that I am not new to Pharo. I have been using Pharo since 2011. So definetly do not think we do not understand the pain for a beginner to get into all this but on the other hand, the hand holding in other programming languages is also very limited. Even with python the material is great to get you started but once you are outside the beginner gate you are all alone digging stack overflow and the dark corners of google search. In the end you will figure out that searching for the answer yourself will become more and more fast than googling it, especially if the answer is not that obvious. Its all part of being a coder :) Remember contributing back even little, counts for a lot. Afterall as Stef so elegant puts it, Pharo belongs to all of us.
