image livelock

I've noticed my image livelocks occassionally, when running tests from a category and other times as well. So when I am in my system, which is crazy with asynchronous evaluation, and I livelock, I wonder: is this due to Pharo locking as I have seen or is there an issue in my code? Has there been previous reports of livelock? Any clues where the issue may reside? thanks ^^ Robert

ConfigurationOf versions with development blessing

Hi! Andrei and I have had an issue loading our configuration using the following script: Gofer it smalltalkhubUser: 'Moose' project: 'GToolkit'; configurationOf: 'GTSpotter'; loadDevelopment. It was loading an old version, instead of expected one. Moreover, the following script worked: Gofer new smalltalkhubUser: 'Moose' project: 'GToolkit'; package: 'ConfigurationOfGTSpotter'; load. (ConfigurationOfGTSpotter project version: #'development') load. Then, we have found out that one version has blessing set to development: version102: spec <version: '1.0.2' imports: #('1.0-baseline' )> spec for: #'common' do: [ spec blessing: #'developmentâ. but it was incorrect. There is about 105 versions with development blessing (Moose 6.0 image). You can check it out using: ((SystemNavigation default allSendersOf: #blessing:) select: [ :each | (each selector beginsWith: 'version') and: [ each methodClass name beginsWith: 'ConfigurationOf' ] ] ) select: [ :each | each sourceCode includesSubstring: 'blessing: #''development''.' ]. If project distinguish between bleeding edge version and development version, it is correct. But if not, it could be a problem (like in our case of Spotter). So I suggest you to check your project and fix it if appropriate. Autonomous Shark-Monitoring Drone

Dear Friends and Colleagues, as you may know, Sharks, as apex predators, are vital to maintaining healthy marine ecosystems, and at the same time, their populations are plummeting due to human actions. It is estimated for example that the population of pelagic oceanic white tip sharks is reducing by 17% per year [1] and I've heard (can't find a reference) that populations in the eastern indian/western pacific are at 1% of normal levels. Such reductions in populations create "trophic cascades" that produce wide-ranging changes in populations of different species all the way down the food chain [2]. And the marine ecosystem is a key source of human nutrition; it comprises between 13% and 17% of global human protein intake [3]. As you may also know, there is currently a shark attack crisis in New South Wales [4]. While most people in the region oppose killing sharks in response to the crisis, existing solutions, netting and culling reduce those same threatened populations of sharks upon which the sustainability of marine food supply d ecosystems depend [5], and are arguably ineffective [6]. Apparently the most successful approach at avoiding attacks is the use of human spotters, as used in Cape Town, where people in tall towers scan the sea close to shore [6]. But please watch this Youtube video <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2U3gjwJfS4> [7] from Pismo Beach, California. The shark is spotted at about 1:20 into the video. This drone, a phantom 3, is sending live video back to the operators, who are using remote control. What we can see from this video is that the point of view of drones is far superior to that of spotters. My first thought is that autonomous drones could provide a cheap and scalable solution to patrolling beaches to prevent shark attacks. I expect that processors like the Pi 2 have easily enough processing power to both plan and execute search patterns along beaches, and perform the image recognition necessary to reliably detect potentially dangerous sharks. A drone might also be able autonomously to visit surfers and swimmers near to the shark and warn them, either by some signal such as flashing red LEDs or an audible message (language issues notwithstanding). The drone would have to be able to identify swimmers and surfers in the water (not easy; sharks confuse seals and surfers all the time), but computing an optimal route to visit suspected swimmers should be relatively easy :-). I imagine that sooner or later it will be possible to construct cheap rugged solar powered docking/charging shelters that drones could depart from and return to, to charge and shelter from the elements after patrols. Satellite communications could provide status reports for maintenance. My second thought is that as a community, we probably have all the necessary expertise to construct a working prototype that at least demonstrates feasibility. Such a prototype would have to be able to fly above the ocean along a beach under its own control for a useful period of time, at least 15 minutes, and demonstrate that it can identify a shark in the water (we could use a rubber shark <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dghbyBaQyI> for testing ;-) ). Our community includes people doing image recognition with the Pi, radio control experts, users of 3D printers, and some exceptional programmers. If a small, strong group could be formed with the relevant expertise we may be able to develop a prototype in a short enough time frame to be relevant. Of course, availability of time is a big issue. I couldn't contribute more than a few hours a week. But nothing ventured, nothing gained. So I'm writing this message to the Squeak and Pharo communities, and bcc'ing a few friends I know that have relevant expertise to ask for two things; first, for good information on scoping out the project, possible technologies, power budgets, costs, what is available off-the-shelf (both in hardware and known algorithms) and what we would need to construct ourselves, and second, for volunteers. Who among us are really excited by this project, have relevant expertise and are motivated to make a contribution? Hi, I am building a widget for fast table in order to filter them for Synectique and Pharo. For now I have a Rubric editor where we can write a pattern and I use a Rubric announcement to update the Fast Table. So each time the rubric is update the method #update is call. At the beginning #update was: ---- pattern := self patternFromString: filterField getText asString trimBoth. fastTable dataSource: (initialDataSource newDataSourceMatching: pattern). fastTable refresh ----- But this will update the Fast Table at each character, so I want to add a delay. For example I want to let the user type and update the table if he don't type for 0.2second. The only way I found is this: ---- update: anAnnoucement | pattern timeStamp | timeStamp := DateAndTime now. timestamp := timeStamp copy. It looks like the taskbarThumbnails might be leaking memory. When moving the mouse across the taskbar viewing the different thumbnails the memory usage increases by quite a lot (viewed in the taskmanager (Windows) ). I made an example script to illustrate the resource usage. Test scenario: 20 windows; 1 Playground, 19 Nautilus browsers (these are minimized). =============== Create Test Scenario ======================== 19 timesRepeat: [ Nautilus openOnClass: Object. World doOneCycle. ]. World doOneCycle. World submorphs select: [ :m | m isKindOf: NautilusWindow ] thenDo: [ :m | m minimize ] ===== Enumerate the mouse moving from one taskbarButton to the next ======= | delay | delay := [ :msToWait | | t | t := Time now asMilliSeconds. Hi, With Miguel Campusano we build a small demo. There is a "Execution Metalink Demoâ Plugin for Nautilus. "A demo of Metalink usage: when it is installed, it glows red when the selected method is executed somewhere in the systemâ If you install it and open a new browser, there is a strange morph in the middle position. every time you select a method, it installs a meta-link there that calls a method on the morph to make it red. Then the morph has a #step method to get darker step by step. -> activate the plugin -> open new browser -> go to Array>>#asArray and see how it glows e.g. when moving the window Note: -> if you select the ârightâ methods, the image will freeze (meta-recursion, we do not use meta-level aware links yet) -> somehow the metalinks do not get GCed (but it seems the actual de-installing works). The idea is that it is for now just a demoâ¦ but when the framework gets stable, it is an example of what we can do with it. Marcus

building the pharo-vm failed

I am trying to build the vm and I got an error during make, listed at the bottom is one item that had error, but there were many conflicting types errors. I started with the latest bz2 from here: http://files.pharo.org/vm/src/vm-unix-sources/blessed/. I setup my tool environment (Ubuntu). The README.md says do a make in the platforms dir but that failed. [ANN] Cupboard inspector for Teapot

Hi, I took a few minutes to add a custom inspector tool ("Cupboard") to Teapot showing all the available teapots. The tool is accessible from the Tool menu right after loading "Teapot" and allows get an overview on running teapots. If you teapot has dynamic routes they will be shown as well. See screenshot attached. You can also start/stop a Teapot or add a new one serving static contents from a selected directory. Also catalog messages were added to the ConfigurationOfTeapot and the NeoJSON repo in the dependencies was fixed. It relies on robots to build a map of the environment as a first step to further mission specific tasks (eg. extracting trapped victims). In scenarios where time is critical such in the aftermath of an earthquake, the use of multiple robots allows to speed up the exploration and to take advantage of distributed sensor to increase the mapping process. Each robot explores a different but connected area. The global map is built by merging local maps built by individual robots. To build a map of an unknown environment, a robot has to perform Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). Based on different perceived data (typically odometery and laser scans), metric SLAM algorithms localize the robot while building an occupancy grid. The occupancy grid models the environment as a matrix where each cell denotes the probability of occupancy of a small area. Best metric SLAM algorithms produce precise maps that allow localization with typically centimetric precision. However, an occupancy grid map is materialized as a large matrix. Beside the memory consumption, such a map leads to high CPU consumption for path planning. CPU consumption is also a concern in multi-robot exploration. Indeed, merging metric maps produced by different robots is computationally intensive. The above drawbacks of metrics maps can be mitigated by the use of topological maps. However, topological maps do not allow precise obstacle delimitations needed for autonomous robots exploration. The goal of this PhD is to contribute to our ongoing effort, and propose a solution that gathers the best of both worlds. The expected outcome is a SLAM algorithm that builds a topological map that embeds metric information. The target algorithm should be implemented on top of the ROS (www.ros.org <http://www.ros.org/>) middleware and validated both in simulation and on actual robots. issue with large file path on windows

For those who had problems with pharo on windows and github based repositories, I built a windows vm with support for long paths: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8yEahnuIem2bmxwdzJuUXFxVGM/view?usp=shari… For browsing directories with large paths (FileList or Inspect), you may need one additional change in the image (But I am not really sure about that) : DiskStore>>initialize super initialize. maxFileNameLength := Smalltalk vm maxFilenameLength ifNil: [ 32767 ]. please test and give feedback. This wasn't as easy as I thought, and I had to make some more changes for the file permissions (the stat-functions don't work for files with long paths). Relation between Garage PG and PGv2

Hi all, and Guille Polito in particular, I'm loading the Garage classes into Pharo 4, and I see the Garage-Postgres package "duplicates" the classes of the PostgresV2 package, but instead of using the PG prefix, it uses the GA prefix. This is in particular with the case of Garage-Postgres-Protocol package. Why is it so? Because even GAConnection>>#buildDefaultConnectionArgs (which is a replica of PGConnection) references PGConnectionArgs instead of GAConnectionArgs, which is the replica of the first. QUESTION: Isn't Garage a "common API" for the *existing* drivers? (like a common wrapper), and if so it delegates the protocol handling to the real driver? Hi, I just spotted this: Integer>>#putOn: aStream (aStream isBinary ifTrue: [ self asByteArray ] ifFalse: [ self asString]) putOn: aStream It does not look so bad at the begining, butâ¦ if I do: ByteArray streamContents: [ :s | 42 putOn: s ] I got an infinite loop. I know, it does not look as a very typical case, butâ¦ if Iâm writing to a Socket and I want to use mySocket << 255 âIACâ, thatâs exactly what will happen :( If I redefine it as: Integer>>#putOn: aStream aStream isBinary ifFalse: [ self asString putOn: aStream. ^ self ]. self asByteArray do: [ :each | aStream nextPut: each ] then is okâ¦ Would that be a good change? seg fault on Ubuntu when launching

Hello, I am new to Pharo and just getting into it. I have Ubuntu and used PPA to install Pharo. The launcher is failing with a segfault crash.dmp when trying to launch. It is the UnixOSProcessAccessor>>forkAndExec... that is segaulting. I looked in /usr/lib/pharo-vm and do not see a UnixOSProcess plugin. Is it internal? I am able to launch an image from outside the launcher. -- thanks, Robert

FilePlugin primitiveFail on Win7 slave

Hey guys, is there a known problem with the FilePlugin on the Win7 slave? Whenever I try to delete a file I get a primitiveFailed. As you can see in the trace below, Iâm actually even checking for FileNotFound, which means that the file exists but the VM canât perform the operation for some reason. MultistateLabelMorph still required

Hi, from Web history I see that it was a Polymorph extension from Gary Chambers: "Added MultistateLabelMorph that can adapt to interaction sates from buttons." http://forum.world.st/update-1-1-11293-Polymorph-Enhancements-td1680386.html In Pharo5.0 Latest update: #50380 one can see that it is not referenced. Do we still need it or can we move it to deprecated? Thanks T.

No, they are needed. Because glyphs must be calculated (getGlyphs:of:) after(!) setting font size. Otherwise there are huge gaps between characters. When font problem appears, some characters are of size 14 even if font size 10. So glyphs of big characters have larger extent as it should be. In your example you set font size and fix font, so all characters are rendered correctly, but at wrong positions. That is a source of unnecessary gaps. Thete is a way to break font: 1) Get new pharo image 2) Get Bloc 3) Switch to bloc 4) remove all morphs 5) save and quite 6) open image 7) open nautilus Do something to fix font. Repeat 4-7. If fix is "fake" fonts will be broken.. I haven't followed this thread closely so I apologize in advance if I am somewhat off topic but I think what I have to say may be of interest to some of you. I think the current method of determining a hash value for a collection is fine in the general case and if it is inadequate for your particular needs then implement your own collection class that does what you want. This was the case for one of my applications so I created classes HashArray and HashSet. Both of these classes used as their hash value the XOR of the the hash values of the collection elements (which was of course stored in an instance variable). Each time an element was added, removed, or replaced in the collection the hash value of the collection had to be recomputed (required O(1) time). Of course this approach breaks down if the collection elements can change their hash values. My solution is not ideal for the hashArray case because two hashArrays containing the same elements but in a different order would have the same hash value. But this didn't matter for my application because I used hashArrays as a set converted into an array (with values sorted) for time/space efficiency reasons. This worked really well for me, in part because the elements stored in the hashArrays and hashSets also had really good hash values. Also note that, in my application, two hashArrays or hashSets containing the same elements were considered to be equal. If anyone makes use of this idea I wouldn't mind a quick email on your experience. Ralph Boland
