I've been just going through "Computer Programming with GNU Smalltalk" book using Pharo 1.0 as an actual ST implementation. The book mentions "stdin nextLine" as a way to get an input from a user via the standard input. Is there a similar class/method in Pharo?

Hi. Evaluating: DateAndTime now asUnixTime and then creating a DateAndTime object from the result: DateAndTime fromUnixTime: <seconds> does not yield an equivalent object. As far as I can tell, this is because the unix epoch is hard coded in two places: DateAndTime class>>unixEpoch "Answer a DateAndTime representing the Unix epoch (1 January 1970, midnight UTC)" ^ self basicNew ticks: #(2440588 0 0) offset: Duration zero; yourself. DateAndTime>>fromUnixTime: anInteger ^ self fromSeconds: anInteger + 2177452800 "unix epoch constant" So in the end I get a difference of 7200 seconds. I'll gladly open up a bug but can someone please confirm that this is actually a bug and that I didn't miss something? Cheers, Max

Hi! With latest pharo 304 in Linux the shortcut for inspect it (ctrl + i) doesn't work but alt + i. I have evaluated Preferences enable: #swapCOntrolAndAltKeys. Actually, all the other shortcuts (browse it, do it, explore it, and so on) works with ctrl + XXX but there is a problem with inspect it. Can someone confirm this ? Cheers, Mariano

Hello all, Maybe I am simply getting confused by reading code from an "old" image, but I am trying to install Citezen. As I read the configuration, it was written in terms of Seaside 2.8, but it looks like 3.0 is being installed. Any ideas? I am open to thinking about Seaside 3, but my packages will fail to load due to the configuration changes. So far, all I have found is that I need to "change to the new system" but not much more than that. Perhaps the answer is to comment out the offending #initialize code, load everything, and then worry about how to get them registered. As slick as it is to be able to use Seaside to configure my Seaside apps, I do not want to trust myself on that front; I want them to be secured from the beginning, and temporarily re-configured for development as needed, and then programmatically switched back to secure-or-nothing. Semi-rhetorical question: should Citezen be loading Seaside? Could/should there be a Citezen-base or something that just reads BibTeX, and then other things that do all of the web-enabled work? All I do with it is parse entries, for which is very valuable. Bill

I'm using the Pharo 1.0 image and have loaded the configuration for SmaCC. It doesn't seem to come with any instruction or examples about how to use it, and I seem to have only the SmaCC-Runtime package group. I think I need SmaCCDev, but can't figure out how to load it. I opened up the monticello browser, but when I try to add a repository it asks me for an email address. I would appreciate help on any or all of figuring out how to use SmaCC, loading SmaCCDev (or any other packages) and info about package management in Pharo. Thanks. Ross Boylan

Hello: I just try to get started with Pharo to experiment with some benchmarks and would be grateful for some basic hints, since the documentation on pharo-project.org is not to excessive. As far as I read in the documentation of the language shootout[1], I will need the OSProcess package. How can I load this package into the image downloaded from p-p.org? My second problem is to execute code from the command line. I tried a simple example file $ cat test.sq Transcript open; cr; show: 'Hello, world'. $ Squeak\ 4.2.1beta1U.app/Contents/MacOS/Squeak\ VM\ Opt pharo1.0-10418-BETAdev09.08.3.image test.sq But this only leads to a debugger popping up in installSourceFile saying "No content to install". Looks like aStream is nil which should have the data loaded from file:test.sq Any pointers to documentation which might discusses command line related features are very welcome. I actually just need a way to choose a benchmark to be executed from the commandline. The actual code could already be in the image. Hi Pharo list, The lastest akuhn/SUnit runs fasters tests first. When running your test suite for the second time, faster tests are run first. For the whole 9000 tests in the dev image, this means that the first 8000 tests are run in like 10 milliseconds. Also I fixed the menues in the test runner, you can now mark either all or single tests are expected defect. If you mark expected defects through the UI they are stored on the class side. The #expectedFailures method on the instance side is still taken into account for compatibility, but storing expected defects on the class side is the preferred way to do it now. I also cleared up the vocabulary. There are no more history on the class side, rather there are two histories one called "last run" and one called "expected defects" that both serve different purposes. The "last run" history is used to mark test results in the browser. The "expected defects" history is used to keep track of expected / unexpected defects. (As far I know, the icons in O2 show this as well.) Plus I added the ability to step through a failed tests. This stops right before the actual test method, rather than at the failed assertion. To step through a failed test, run your tests with the test runner and use the menu of test failures or errors. (OB and O2 might consider adding this option as well. In particular in combination with running fasters tests first a "run and debug/step-through first failure" might be interesting.) To run the test-suite for Magma 1.1r2 in Pharo: - Proceed past two warnings about "FlapTab" when loading Magma. - Revert FileDirectory>>#fileExists: to the prior version. - Remove #testClassSchemaUpgrades. - Load OSProcess. The second and third steps, above, I believe may be regressions in Pharo 1.1. In Pharo 1.1: FileDirectory default fileExists: '/bin/sh' "---> false" but the file does, indeed, exist as a soft-link. Squeak answers true and, I'll bet, so does Pharo 1.0, so I'm not sure if there is a problem here or not. #testClassSchemaUpgrades tests Magma's ability to keep up with class-schema changes in the image. Usually class-schemas change only in development, not production systems so maybe it's not a big deal. But still, it can be very convenient develop new class schemas while connected to a persistent Magma store. Magma makes use of the SystemChangeNotifier to do this. I don't know if Pharo cleaned something with SystemChangeNotifier or a regression happened, but I don't have time to debug it right now. Certainly, if there is a problem with Magma I will fix it, but I'm not convinced of that yet. - Chris

Hi. I was trying the welcome workspace of Pharo 1.1 in order to install Magma but it fails. I am evaluating: Gofer new squeaksource: 'MetacelloRepository'; package: 'ConfigurationOfMagma'; load. ((Smalltalk at: #ConfigurationOfMagma) project latestVersion) load The error was a Sintax Error in lazyX ^ x ifNil: [x _ Period or right bracket expected ->42] I attach screenshot. It seems the problem with the underscore as they are not allowed anymore as asiggment in Pharo 1.1. In order to appear in Pharo welcome workpsace this should be working. If someone makes the changes and updates de configuration please let me know (sorry but I don't have time to do it myself). Otherwise, I will have to remove it from Pharo 1.1 workspace as it doesn't work and makes confusion. Thanks Mariano

Now you can :) We request some of you to perform an experiment using DSM to see your software package structure and to fix cycles between packages. Our tool shows dependencies between packages and highlight some bad dependencies generating structure cycles. It also helps to understand dependencies. Your goal is to fill a survey using our tool. I prepared a mini-tutorial about DSM and eDSM. It can help you to understand the visualization tool. To ease the use of our tool, I loaded it in a PharoCore1.2. And there are two archives available: - the first contains an image with our tool with a model of Pharo loaded in it, so you can play with our tool on pharo itself. Here, you have to load your code, then populate a moose model and use the tool. I've been trying to find a library for Pharo/Squeak which would handle GET/POST requests with the ability to manage cookies and deal with https servers. The HTTPSocket that's included in Pharo doesn't have cookies support. I tried to find any library that handles cookies and there came up CurlPlugin and SWHTTPClient. SWHTTPClient page has a broken link to the source code (http://map.squeak.org/package/15f42ec1-e93e-4bcf-ab2b-6746ae9d413f) CurlPlugin package for Win32 that I found on the main project page fails most of the tests and can't retrieve any http data. I also found WebClient/WebServer library at http://www.squeaksource.com/@QY3MLGU4hU3c8qcE/2xQek_iM which also fails most tests after installation. I wonder what people in smalltalk community are using when they need to do some web scraping when they need to keep some session in cookies? What would be the best library to invest time into (I am very new to Smalltalk)? Thank you, Andrei

Now when a protocol is added in a class, I get a reorganized event but I do not get the changed element.... And I checked and I see that: notifyOfChangedCategoriesFrom: oldCollectionOrNil to: newCollectionOrNil (self hasSubject and: [oldCollectionOrNil ~= newCollectionOrNil]) ifTrue: [SystemChangeNotifier uniqueInstance classReorganized: self subject]. Hi guys during the sprint I discussed with Gary about ToolBuilder and we think that it would be better to remove it since a lot of new widgets are not covered so this means that we will be constantly limiting ourselves. Of course ToolBuilder is a nice idea (if we would have several UI framework). So far we got only one and we would have several we would have to take the smallest common denominator. Another idea would be to extend toolBuilder to support new widgets. So what do you think? Stef

I gave the latest release a spin and it seams quit doesn't work (again). old reference -> http://code.google.com/p/pharo/issues/detail?id=1068 can someone confirm? if so do we want a new issue or reopen the old one? Also the host menu is not consistent with the world menu. for example the tools menu is different. Script manager is in one but not the other. The help browser text references it which is why i noticed. I haven't looked at the implementation. is there a way they are supposed to be kept in sync? cheers, Mike

Hi I have worked on the integration of the new package implementation and its synchronisation with MC/PackageInfo. Now I have the following problem: Scenario 1: the user have created a package Foo which contains several classes, some like FooObject in the category Foo-Core, others in category Foo-Others. Now if he creates a package Foo-Core, Foo-Core should contain the classes having Foo-Core as category. I have a problem with PackageInfo semantics since here packages Foo and Foo-Core could contain FooObject. Scenario 2: the user have created a class in the category Foo-Core, and after created a package only named Foo. The classes in category Foo-Core should be added to Foo. But some other packages and categories starting with Foo may exist. Now in the new implementation, classes cannot be two packages at the same time. So I will be forced to implement a checker making sure that there is no such situation and also that we should remove first the Foo package and then create two package Foo-Core and Foo-Others. What do you think? May be such a checker should be hooked into MC right now so we detect anyway such bad situations. For the moment I'm fighting within events and announcements to make sure that I could potentially keep the new implementation of Package and PackageOrganizer in sync with PackageInfo but this is not that simple. Hi everyone. I have no idea what the status is on the editor in pharo and if there are any plans to do something to / with it. If there's some resource, could you point me to it? In the meantime I thought I'd share my impressions with you; doesn't hurt at least. Since I started developing in Pharo I've struggled with the editor, in particular with the fact that I need to use the mouse a lot to position the cursor which, as all of you know, makes development quite a bit slower. Before I came to Pharo I used to develop in Eclipse and Eclipse supports all shortcuts used inside OS X (and if not you can change the shortcut settings). My favorite shortcuts: cmd + -> : go to end of line cmd + <- : go to beginning of line alt + -> : go to end of the current word alt + -> : go to beginning of current word alt + arrow up : switch the line above with the current line (current line has line number -1, line above has line number +1) alt + arrow down : switch the line below with the current line cmd + l : delete line (I know this shortcut is used to cancel changes at the moment. Still, I haven't found a shortcut yet that deletes a single line) I'd LOVE to see this in Pharo, or at least be able to configure the shortcuts myself. I think, being able to change the shortcuts is important anyway because each developer has an own style. I'd try to come up with a solution myself but I just don't have the time at the moment. In my app I need update pharo image with some resources (new package, icons, configs...) remotelly. After updating I need save image session. For that app show user some special screen, save image and return to ussual app state. My app has process that do system changes when needed and "commit" it as I wrote. I do something like [self blockUI. self doUpdate. SmalltalkImage current snapshot: true andQuit: false. self unblockUI. ] fork And sometimes after image restart I have image crash due to some world cicle activity and freetype plugin failure. I try little [SmalltalkImage current snapshot: true andQuit: false] fork code from workspace. And situation same - sometimes image cant restart. I never see that when I save image manually. What is correct way to save image for my purpose?

Hi. ImageSegment uses GC to compute the out pointers. Basically, to a given array of roots (a graph) it does: 1) It marks the rootArray and all root objects by turning on the Garbage Collector bit in the object header of those particular objects. 2) Then does a mark pass over all objects. This will stop at our marked roots leaving our segment unmarked in their shadow. 3) Finally, it unmarks the rootArray and all root objects. 4) Only external objects are now marked. The unmarked objects in the graph of objects of the arrays are those who will be put in the WordArray (the segment) and those who are marked to the outPointers. However, I don't see where step 2) is done in Interpreter >> primitiveStoreImageSegment In a piece of such method it does: "Then do a mark pass over all objects. This will stop at our marked roots, thus leaving our segment unmarked in their shadow." savedYoungStart := youngStart. youngStart := self startOfMemory. "process all of memory" "clear the recycled context lists" freeContexts := NilContext. freeLargeContexts := NilContext. self markAndTraceInterpreterOops. "and special objects array" youngStart := savedYoungStart. Hi, I have been using the Cog VM exclusively for several months now, and from time to time it crashes on me without leaving any trace in debug log. One frequent cause for the crash that I noticed is dealing with Monticello (both reading and writing). Does anyone experience similar things? Am I doing something wrong? The image I got is based on the sources from 27.06.2010. Perhaps a more general idea: given that this VM brings an important improvement, do we want to have a more concerted effort to beta-test it? In Squeak, the preference pane includes a "smart quotes" setting (defaulting on, so I turn it off immediately). I don't see one for Pharo. It appears to be stuck on. I need to turn this feature off, or my typing speed drastically reduces, and my annoyance level is greatly increased. It's not under Editing (Smart Updating isn't it). Working with WebClient i found what it lacks of non latin languages support (for example Russian). During investigation i found, what for streaming there used ByteString, which is custructed by calling String class>>new:. All subclases of String by calling of this method produces only ByteString instances. Also WriteStream>>contents indirectly calls String class>>new:. So even you construct WideString with #basicNew: calling (WideString basicNew: size) writeStrem contents produce only ByteString Is this a bug or there some workaround? Thanks. -- Andrey Larionov

Hi folks. Hope Eliot is reading this thread. It is time to think in Pharo 1.2 and we need to discuss if we want to have CogVM as the standard Pharo VM. Most of us have tried it and found it incredible fast. So it would be very good to take advantage of it. But I think there are a couple of things to be discussed: 1) Cog VM seems to be aimed for x86 and 32 bits. You can read Eliot quotes: "The Cog VM is a just-in-time compiler that currently supports only x86 No effort has been made to maintain 64-bit compatibility. Apologies, this was unaffordable." So...how much important is this for us? do we care? and if we want to do it, is it "doable" ? is it less doable than the normal squeak VM ? I really would like to have 64bits VM + 64bits images in a near future...but hat's just my thoguhts. 2) The status of the external plugins. Are they working with Cog ? Not only the "core plugings" but FFI, OSProcess (I read some problems with it), TrueType, etc... 3) Is it stable for production use? For example, I read that with seaside there are some crashes. 4) Depends on heroes. I never liked this idea. It has nothing to do with Eliot. He is very cool and helpful. But I wonder, do we understand the new VM and the changes? are we able to handle and fix it even without eliot ? 5) Integration to VMMaker. I saw that they started to merge cog (actually, I think only stack vm?) to the trunk of VMMaker. This is really good news. I hope everything is there and merged. 6) Binaries. It seems the official released didn't come with binaries. So we should compile it for each OS. Ok..that's all my thoughts. I would really like to have a discussion here and see what to do.....grrrrrr you are all in holidays, aren't you? hahah cheers Mariano

Hi Laurent! One thing with autotest. When I compile a method, even though it is not covered by the tests, the tests are run again. This does not always make sense I feel since it slow down the way I code... For example, when I am defining a meta-model, then running the test each time I add some business method it makes sense. However, when I define a mondrian visualization, all #visualize have to be excluded by autotest. In 1.1 and 1.2, without setting a language environment for Chinese, I am able to use Chinese by setting fonts. It seems to work except for accepting a class named in Chinese will end in a ClassBuilder error of 'Class names must be capitalized'. Well is it a feature(requires language environment being set correctly) or bug? The code located being: validateClassName: aString "Validate the new class name" aString isSymbol ifFalse: [ ^ false ]. aString first canBeGlobalVarInitial ifFalse:[ self error: 'Class names must be capitalized'. ^false]. environ at: aString ifPresent:[:old| (old isKindOf: Behavior) ifFalse:[ self notify: aString asText allBold, ' already exists!\Proceed will store over it.' withCRs]]. ^ true and following the code the problemic method is #canBeGlobalVarInitial: which is found in two classes: in EncodedCharSet class side: canBeGlobalVarInitial: char | leadingChar | leadingChar := char leadingChar. leadingChar = 0 ifTrue: [^ self isUppercase: char]. ^ self isLetter: char. and in LanguageEnvironment canBeGlobalVarInitial: char ^ Unicode canBeGlobalVarInitial: char. Hi. If you try to load Shout, you will have the error: 'styler is already defined in PluggableTextMorph' The problem is that the Shut class PluggableShoutMorph subclass PluggableTextMorph. PluggableShoutMorph has its own instVar 'styler' which PluggableTextMorph doesn't have in Pharo 1.1 But in Pharo 1.2 (I don't know why) PluggableTextMorph has its own instVar 'styler'....thus, the problem. Of course, if I remove the instVar 'styler' from PluggableShoutMorph it shoud load...but I am not sure if this is the correct action. Thanks for the help in advance Mariano

I've downloaded the SqueakSSL.dll plugin and put it in the root folder. Also I've downloaded SqueakSSL-Core SqueakSSL-Plugin SqueakSSL-Tests All tests passed. Now when I try to execute "SqueakSSL google: 'Squeak'." It fails creating the module in primitiveSSLCreate "Primitive. Creates and returns a new SSL handle" <primitive: 'primitiveCreate' module: 'SqueakSSL'> ^self primitiveFailed How can I fix it? Thank you, Andrei
