Uhm, guys I really appreciate that I can use IPv6 but: Yesterday I spent some time trying to open a socket given that I know the IP address and the port. The lack of documentation or suggested types sure wasn't helpful and I wished Pharo was statically typed so that I at least knew what I had to pass in. That's what I came up with: hostIP := (SocketAddressInformation forHost: anIpString service: '' flags: 0 addressFamily: SocketAddressInformation addressFamilyINET4 socketType: SocketAddressInformation socketTypeStream protocol: SocketAddressInformation protocolTCP) first socketAddress. socket := Socket new. socket connectTo: hostIP port: portNumber. There's gotta be a better way to do this. The whole API with arrays where you have to know the index, ByteArray objects, integer flags and so forth seems like a blast from the past. Cheers Philippe

[Pharo-project] [ANN] Aida/Web 6.0 with tree-like control flow released

Dear Smalltalkers, After a long journey the Aida 6.0 web framework and application server is released today on Squeak, Pharo and VisualWorks. To download it visit our website http://www.aidaweb.si and its download section. Come also on ESUG Aida tutorial next Thursday to get a feel of all new features. Major new features since previous 5.6: 1.Tree-like control flow (see WebDemoApp control flow examples) as the final step to close gap to the support of all kinds of web applications from those with an usual graph-like navigation to those with a tree-like control flow as found in GUI-like web apps. 2.Introduction of web execution contexts . These contexts give a scope to the "execution" of web request and are the precondition for controlling this flow of execution. 3.Translation support for text on the web apps, to allow the multilingual text on the pages, besides multilingual content, 4.Caching (memcached like) to improve performance of serving the content, which otherwise doesn't change frequently. About tree-like control flow in action with a help of the attached image: in Aida action method you want to confirm a delete by asking the user with a popup dialog window. Execution is there interrupted until the YES or NO button is pressed on dialog. At that time the execution of action method continue and delete is done if YES button was pressed. [Pharo-project] Compression - is this correct?

Hello all, I am porting some code to Pharo and ran across some of my uses ZLib to put things into byte arrays. Knowing that Squeak and Pharo contain compression, it seemed reasonable to use that. I found some discussion on squeak-dev and created the following: | out zip in | out := ByteArray writeStream. zip := GZipWriteStream on:out. zip nextPutAll:( ByteArray new:1000 ); finish. in := out contents readStream. zip := GZipReadStream on:in. zip contents. It seems to work, crunching the 1000 bytes down to size and then back up. Aside from its being a pointless exercise in this case, do you see any problems? The next step would be to store "real" compressed data into a global variable and then package that; at least that is what I have done in Dolphin. Is there a similar MC trick? I suppose I could write something to code the compressed data into a method and package that. Simpler/better ideas are always welcome. Bill

[Pharo-project] System vs. hierachy browsers

I am not sure how much of this is self-inflicted and how much is already fixed; perhaps someone can remind me of a solution that already exists. If not, think of it as a wish list. I have typically never liked so-called "system browsers" because they tend to show classes alphabetically and hide inheritance relationshiops; that's really important in trying to understand a design. The toolset I am using now is reasonably fast (in fact, it's perfectly fine on my new quad core box, but I hate throwing hardware at efficiency problems) but it not the bleeding edge. The system browsers do not show hierachies, and the [hierarchy] buttons spawn off something that often shows only one of the paths from a super class. IIRC, I've seen a browser that does better, but I can't remember which one it was or whether it can run fast enough to work on most of the hardware I see every day. Sorry for the complaining tone of the above; I don't mean it that way, but I also do not have time to fix it right now. Bill
