Environment-independent styler?

Hello, Suppose that you want to show the diff between the source code of two methods. In the case that both methods are in the same class, and that such class is present in the system, then no problem: In a DiffModel, one can set a context to the smalltalk syntax styler and get a nice output. DiffModel new leftText: (Point >> #x) sourceCode; rightText: (Point >> #y) sourceCode; contextClass: Point; openWithSpec. [image: Inline image 1] But what happens in the case that the class does not exist in the system? If one doesn't set any context to the styler, then the string will be shown all in black, which is not nice. A partial solution could be to set Object as a context, then the styler will color the code, but instance variables are in red: DiffModel new leftText: (Point >> #x) sourceCode; rightText: (Point >> #y) sourceCode; contextClass: Object; openWithSpec. [image: Inline image 2] Which is also not nice. In my opinion, there should be a styler that just colors the code following the syntax, without checking if the variables or classes are present in the system. It would be an environment-independent styler. What do you recommend to implement this? I guess it should be easy to subclass SHTextStylerST80 and override some methods to do not check anything in the environment. What's your opinion? Thanks, Martin

About generating chapters with Pillar/Pier tools

Hello, I have experimented several dissapointing errors when working with updated Pillar tools. I am not doing anything special besides working under Windows. Apparently the Pillar CommandLineHandler is not working because OSEnvironment exception (Windows 8.1). When executing Pharo.exe Pillar.image export --to=html BioPharo.pier The attached exception raises. Hi Peter, there was no agreement - so we rolled back for Pharo 4 to discuss/decide for Pharo 5. I communicated already how I would solve it to get IMHO a consistent and easy understandable solution: 1. executable example ===================== We talk about executable code here: an "example" in the traditional Smalltalk sense means ONLY a runnable piece of code to demonstrate something. Since a long time and not only in Pharo this is typically done in methods with prefix "example". It is important to note that these methods COULD BUT MUST NOT RETURN an instance. Usually such a method is only there to demonstrate code. These methods with the "example" in the name are currently honored by Nautilus with the clickable icon. See SystemProgressMorph>>exampleChangeLabel or others. => To not be limited to the prefix in the method name I proposed to be able to additionally use the <example> pragma to mark example methods. This way you can choose the method name freely to give an example to others on how to use them. 2. returning examples ===================== While some example methods just demo code and code usage (like "Job example" or "BorderedMorph exampleGradient") a subset of them directly return an instance of the method defining class (like LabelMorph>>example). The idea of the GT Tools is to call these methods and display the return value as inspectable "instances" in the tools, so for instance if you inspect class VirtualMachine or Character you get a tab entitled "E.g." where you can click on these sample instances. GT and (because GT )now latest Pharo currently still uses "gtExample" method prefix or <gtExample> pragma to mark such methods and there is also to wish to remove the "gt" prefix. But with this we would have a clash with the other "exampleXXX" usage. => I would propose to mark the code examples that return an instance with an <exemplar> method. According to Google definition of <exemplar> noun - "a person or thing serving as a typical example or excellent model." Urban dictionary defines <exemplar> as "a typical or standard model or specimen" So I proposed and still propose - "exampleXXX" prefixed methods and <example> pragma for traditional examples as used in other Smalltalks and Pharo before - "exemplarXXX" prefixed methods and <exemplar> pragma (mark code that return an instance always) for the future inspection of exemplars in the tools Thanks Torsten

gtInspectorPresentation:, TreeModel, pragmas, visitors and polluting protocols

Hi, I would like to describe some additional behavior for objects when they are interacting with another objects. The prime example is GTInspector; by default to add presentation you implement a method with "gtInspectorPresentationOrder:". This is fine if there is just one method like this, but when the object can serve multiple purposes it can quite mess up the protocol (in my opinion). Example of that could be (Spec) TreeModel; there are many methods like menu:, displayBlock:, childrenBlock: etc. that should be different based on the particular object. However having a method for each of those cases in the observed method is just a mess. So how could one approach this? The first thing that comes to my mind is a visitor. That might possibly work for code that I've written, but not for spotter/inspector as they work directly on the target object. Thanks, Peter

PetitParser ignorable parsers

Hi, is it possible to add such a parser that would consume input, but wouldn't return anything? Right now I do things like... MyParser>>rule ^ ($[ asParser, anotherRule, $] asParser) ==> [ :nodes | nodes second ] Of course when the rules are more complex, so is the block; however it seems that this is how it's done in the example parsers... So, would it be possible to add some kind of Null/Void/Ignore/Throwaway parser, that would consume the input, but would be omitted from the result? so the above method could be written as MyParser>>rule ^ $[ asNullPaser, anotherRule, $] asNullParser or MyParser>>rule ^ $[ asParser ignore, anotherRule, $[ asParser ignore or something else. Visualizing a repository tree

Hi all, I had asked a similar question before with no much advances, but today I made a discovery that can improve the things a lot: how to export timeline data as structured JSON [1] (and of course this open the possibility to work with it on Pharo). Now I would like to graph the data as a tree with forks, merges and dates and authors of commits. I have seen chronia, but seems overkill for this feature (and is integrated with CVS only). Woden-Roassal pharo5 inspector bugs

Hi, I just noticed that with today's pharo5 image the inspector breaks if Woden-Roassal is in the image. The reason is that there is a recursive call to String>>#findAnySubStr: startingAt: . This is caused by the deprecation of such method then defined as String>>#findAnySubstring: startingAt: . The first call gets the String>>#findAnySubStr: startingAt: which gives the warning and calls ByteString>>#findAnySubstring: startingAt: (in Woden-Roassal package) which calls String>>#findAnySubStr: startingAt: and so on. Now my question is, do you plan on moving Woden to Pharo5? Sorry to bother you all the time. Cheers, Nicolas
