[ANN] Multiple Desktop support for Pharo 5

Julien Delplanque provided this week a goodie to switch between "desktops" - but his initial solution was more or less hiding windows and not really switching between real Pharo worlds/desktops. I gave him some tips what could be done on the pharo-user list. Havent heard from him afterwards. Now I was able to spend a few hours on this topic myself and implemented a full multiple desktop solution myself. This works in Pharo 5 only (currently) and requires latest VM (at least on Windows) from files.pharo.org to get the keyboard shortcuts right. To try: Gofer new smalltalkhubUser: 'TorstenBergmann' project: 'DesktopManager'; configuration; loadDevelopment. The goodie has some nice features like keyboard navigation, world menu integration and even a custom spotter with preview of the desktops. Quick start: =========== - evaluate the above expression in a Pharo 5 image - check the world menu "Desktop" - you can press CTRL + D and then CTRL + A (= Desktop Add) to add a new desktop - you can press CTRL + D and then CTRL + D (= Desktop Desktop) to open the overview - you can press CTRL + D and then CTRL + P (= Desktop Previous) to navigate to the previous desktop - you can press CTRL + D and then CTRL + N (= Desktop Next) to navigate to the next desktop The code is hopefully a good example on how to build a custom spotter, shortcuts, inspector extensions, ... Support for UNC filereferences?

Dear all, I am tremendously happy to announce you that Pharo Consortium will sponsor yet another development effort. In this particular case, it's my honor to carry on such an effort and I will be developing and improving a few things and ideas. All the contract and paperwork has already been done so it's time to start working. Regarding the developments itself, we discussed about these topics: 1) Experiment with a simpler yet more limited OSProcess alternative to execute OS commands. 2) Improving FileSystem in order to better deal with some POSIX stuff like symbolic links, unix file permissions, etc etc. I have already started with 1). OSProcess is super complete and it involves some packages (OSProcess / CommandShell) as well as some VM plugins (OSProcessPlugin, AIOPlugin). OSProcess provides lots of features (like forking the running image) but we would like to focus only in executing OS commands. In addition, OSProcess dates from quite some years ago when many of the current infrastructure features did not exist yet. So the idea is to think a simpler alternative to execute OS commands, using new features such as threaded FFI (for example, for reading async from pipes), pinned objects, etc. We want to use FFI as much as possible rather than VM plugins. >From the image side, we are thinking about an API which would look like a builder-like API (FileSystem, XStream, etc). We have been discussing with David Lewis (OSProcess author) as well as with Eliot Miranda, Esteban Lorenzano, Damien Pollet, Stephane Ducasse, etc in order to agree in a project that would be worth doing (otherwise we would continue using existing tools). And they have all been very kind with me providing positive discussions. I will soon do a survey to measure the most common use cases of OSProcess and related tools. If you have any thought, question, feedback, or whatever, please let us know. Finally, note that I will be doing this project together with another client's project (Quuve) and my life does not have much free time these days...so please be patient!!! What Strides In Pharo?

How about you write an article explaining that? I've used Pharo extensively and the biggest language-level change that has come about is slots. That's hardly a huge revolutionary change (it's also an exceptionally complex model for what it is!). The point releases of Python or Ruby, see bigger changes than this! [0] Now the Pharo guys have done a fantastic job cleaning up the image. But there's a long long way to go there, and there's the tiny fact that no available Smalltalk system bootstraps! Until that happens, and Smalltalk has a reasonable deployment model (writing scripts to strip objects from the image and crossing your fingers doesn't count!), it's hard to take even this clean up effort seriously. [0] The biggest changes in Smalltalk since Smalltalk 80 have been syntax for dynamic arrays, which nobody uses, because it's non-standard; Traits, which nobody uses, because it's non-standard, and the vendor specific syntax for dealing with packages. You can keep saying it until you're blue in the face but in comparison to just about every other language, these are not major changes! New version (47) of SecureSession for Pharo & Squeak

Please load the SecureSession.47 and drive it about a bit. I am missing crypto plugins on Pharo, so avoid the performance test, tto stay responsive. Here are some of the changes: - frame-based pipeline - header per msg so no mutable session state - header is written with message in Asn1Der encoding. - most header fields currently optional - adding per-connection msgId to header - timeSent set also - reworked TransportEndpoint to be better scoped.
