Hiya, I see that Pharo project has embraced Pillar system for documentation purposes and my first question was "Why Pillar?" since, iirc, comparison was made with e.g Markdown which is, obviously, not sufficient for eg. authoring books, but there are more capable markups with 'standard' implementations like rst/Sphinx and Asciidoc(tor). Then I thought it must be some deeper reason, iow. something suitable to work more closely with Pharo itself. Now I have two questions: 1) Can someone answer in more detail "Why Pillar?" and 2) For some time I was considering whether to settle on using rst or AsciiDoc for *all* my writings, which means blog posts, my study notes, preparing books, writing articles etc. Since I've settled to use Python-powered static-site-generator (Nikola) along with reStructuredText markup which can call external 'compilers' to process blog posts written in specific markup, I wonder if it would be possible to use Pillar markup with it since it seems there is cli for it? Smallworlds - Interactive Fiction Framework

I don't know if this is the appropriate venue to do that, but I'd like to announce that I finished a stable implementation of a framework for developing Interactive Fiction in Pharo Smalltalk. It is based on an old code written by Bob Jarvis for Dolphin, but it has been changed so much that it is almost something new. This is my first project and I'm still working around Metacello and polishing stuff up. So I appreciate any code contributions, comments or thoughts about it. up to date library to access facebook api

hi, is there a up to date library to access the facebook API ('graph api')? The facebook api had major changes in April 2015, so any library that wasn't updated in the last few months is probably not working at all. I looked at this place to find a library: http://smalltalkhub.com/list If there is not a library available, what libraries (e.g., rest client libraries for accessing json APIs) should I use to build my own code? which FFI to use

Hello, before jumping deeper into GUI waters, I'd like to play a bit with calling 3rd party C library which I'll need for my project. Considering that I use x86_64 Linux, I wonder if there is some possibility to call 64bit C library or I'd have to compile it as 32bit? I did watch "The good, the bad and the ugly" presentation from PharoDAYS-2015, but I'm not sure what is the current status and whether WIP: FFI is ready to test? (I use V5.0 image)? Github + Metacello + Baselines

I'm trying to use a BaselineOf approach for development, and wanted to know if I got something wrong. 1. Development must be done on the baseline? 2. Configurations must reference a specific point (commit,tag,branch) of the baseline? 3. My dependencies to other projects must be Baselines or Configurations? Why? seeking your tutorials

example of stand-alone desktop app

Hello, I've decided to end my search for an appropriate language/environment in order to write open-surce multi-platform with Pharo. :-)Â Playing a bit with 5.0 image, watching Dimitris' tutorial series, reading several articles (I like Richard's Smalltalk-Talk), subscribed to the mailing lists...convinced me that Smalltalk/Pharo is so much refreshing environment to code in comparison with the pale setup present in som many other statically-compiled languages which I was exploring/evaluating, not to speak about the fact that with Pharo one gets complete setup at once without the need for tedious work of bringing editor+other tools together. I'm aware that Pharo (Smalltalk) are different and I really like its development environment, but wonder about deploying. There is old thread from 2013 providing some help about deploying desktop app, but I wonder if something has changed since then making the whole process somewhat more smooth? I run Debian (Sid) where I'll do all my coding, but would like to provide versions of my desktop app for both Windows and Mac OS-es. Any hint how to proceed? I'd like to see see basic examples which would be equivalent to e.g. some 'classical' desktop app having menu bar wit File/Edit/../About items etc. What is different with Pharo? I assume one does not want to expose the whole dev environment to the end-users, so wonder how to do it? Do devs plan to improve deploying of Pharo desktop app in the future? Although it may be strange, but I'm one of those not liking proliferation of JS and using it for almost everything and therefore I prefer to stay with Pharo (vs e.g. Amber) and write desktop app... Fossil and Filetree

Hi, I have been trying Fossil with Filetree, and I was rather please by the mutuals use of these tools. So I may share a few feedbacks. Fossil[1] itself is a software to manage source code development. It is very simple to install and data is saved in a single sqlite database. It comes with source code management, bug tracker, web interface, wiki and timeline tools. I was a bit afraid by the filetree atomic commit (one file per method) to manage it without much headache with file based VCS. However fossil comes with a nice command: 'fossil addremove' to add/remove the changed files in the repo. So it went fine. So all in all, it is pretty nice if one want to move to a private souce code management system with very little requirement. #storeOn: question

Hi, SortedCollection>>storeOn: seems to have a little problem since it does not store sortBlock and the used super-method (in Collection) uses #add: which uses sortBlock and their default uses #<=, hence if the elements are not comparable via #<=, but need a special sortblock, one gets an error on retrieving that collection. of course i can circumvent that tiny problem by defining #<= or using fuel, but i wonder whether i should report that on the bugtracker? btw perhaps some other collections with instanceVariables which do not define their own #storeOn: (eg Heap) could also have eventually some problems. werner
