Hi I read the chapter on validation of the mentoring course book of andres valloud. http://www.lulu.com/fr/fr/shop/andres-valloud/a-mentoring-course-on-smallta… And I love this extension of SUnit. I loved the idea when I saw it for the first time at Lugano (presentation of Leandro Caniglia). I encourage everybody to read it. Now does anybody implemented in Pharo the SUnit extension? I would like to play with it and eventually write a chapter on it for the next book. The idea is so good. Stef

Mea Culpa

Okay, so far, I've made two mistakes. First was my lack of sensitivity to cultural differences around the world. Now that I know better, I shall do better. Second was my failure to distinguish between different subgroups within the Pharo forum. The reason I chose Pharo forum to discuss my campaign was the fact that it is the most active Smalltalk forum there is. People who are interested in Smalltalk join the most active forum generally, and this includes not only Pharoers, but people from ESUG, Squeak, Cincom, Amber, Redline, etc. So, for example, when I appealed for contributors to the Redline project, I should've distinguished the target audience as those groups other than Pharoers. This was my failure and I own up to it. It is unfortunate that I must use the Pharo forum for this purpose. The Smalltalk community is so terribly fragmented that there is no universal Smalltalk forum to address, at least, none that is actually *inhabited*. Without the ability to address the largest number of Smalltalkers, the SRP cannot make any progress. I'm sorry, but I have to be blunt. If anyone can offer a practical alternative, I'd like to hear it. Otherwise, the SRP has only two choices: 1) Continue what it is doing on the Pharo forum, and be mindful of which group(s) I am addressing. 2) Fold up the campaign and leave the destiny of Smalltalk to the Fates. Without the ability to reach out to Smalltalkers everywhere, I am hopelessly disadvantaged. Tables in Pillar

How is one doing a cell with content wrapping on multiple lines? With the | X | Y | abcd | some very long text that should be wrapping but apparently doesn't. So it is very annoying when one attempts to describe a long thing, which is one purpose for a table. I get one single line for each entry. How to do that? TIA Phil

Using GTSpotter how do I find an implementor of #accept ?

when I hit shift+enter and type 'accept' I get things that are not #accept, e.g. #accept: and AbstractAcceptor. If I add a space after accept it doesn't help. What do I not understand? Thanks Paul

World lastKeystroke and openInWorld: aPasteUpMorph

Hi, I'm using pharo to teach smalltalk as first 'real' programming language at school. With older versions of pharo I was glad that my pupils could track keystrokes so easily by evaluating World lastKeystroke. With Pharo3.0/4.0 this only returns '<down>' independently of any keys I'm typing. f := PasteUpMorph new openInWorld. f takeKeyBoardFocus. f lastKeystroke. Is returning the empty string. Hence, my question: Is lastKeystroke broken, or how is it meant to be used now? Second problem: In older versions of pharo this would work: f := PasteUpMorph new openInWorld. b := EllipseMorph new. b openInWorld: f. But with Pharo 3.0/4.0 the last line raises an error: MessageNotUnderstood: PasteUpMorph>>startSteppingSubmorphsOf With f := WorldMorph new openInWorld. b := EllipseMorph new. b openInWorld: f. pharo freezes. Halo Menu On Spec Tree Node

Hi All, I had an issue - when I opened a Halo on a Spec tree node in the UI and select the menu Icon, I got a DNU message. However if I selected a normal Morph, the menu Icon worked fine. I'm using Pharo 4.0 released version. Fixed this by changing TreeModel>>iconFor to: iconFor: aNode ^ iconBlock value cull: aNode content*s* cull: aNode Craig

Rectangle center rounding

Hello I came to problem with Roassal which originates in Rectangle class. Although rectangle holds its points (origin and corner) in float (not rounded) numbers, the Rectangle>>#center method rounds it down to integers. It causes wierd behavior in Roassal where moving elements in some ocasions are "jumping" to all directions like a jelly. I understand it is for performance reasons, but I think this optimisation is not on the right place. Rectangle origin: 0.9(a)0.9 corner: 3@3 just does not have center 1@1, it is way too far from the real center. Shouldn't the rounded method be separated as for example roundedCenter or something like that to eliminate the confusion? New Pharo based solution in the wild

Hi all, After one year of negotiations (demos, quotes, etc.) and a couple of months of development, by the end of December we released a pilot version of our pharo based solution. The solution consists of a native mobile app (Android), with Pharo 2.0 servers, using Seaside for the web UI, Seaside-REST for the mobile app API and Zinc Websockets to certain "live" features of the web. The persistence is GLORP using the native PostgreSQL driver. I can't disclose much more about the customer or the solution yet, it is a private solution for a multinational consumer goods company operating in Argentina. But I can comment on the numbers: * The pilot will end in ~40 days * It involves 50 mobile users of the Android app using it daily. * An nginx frontend for static files and http proxying to the pharo app servers * Two pharo images as servers, one for the web interface, and one for the REST API. The image is the same, they work as two separate app servers to make use of each server and for improved reliability (I don't want the seaside failures, which has been none yet, to affect the REST API). * Everything running in DigitalOcean droplets based in NYC (they add ~180ms of latency from here but their price/value equations is unmatched). Some performance numbers: * The Pharo server uptime has been no less than perfect, the first 10 days with uninterrupted uptime. Only shutdown to upgrade the image (yesterday night). * The load is minor, with peaks of ~30 concurrent mobile users during a few "business" moments of the day, the server never passed 15% of CPU use. The disk I/O is also small, but the database is small too (growing daily). If the pilot succeeds the plan is to extend the user base to ~1000 mobile users. But some water must pass under the bridge before thinking of that. And if it ever happens, it is going to be gradual. Some anecdotal info I quit my Smalltalk full time job at InfOil (after 9 years of employment) to dedicate 100% to my new company. So I'm betting big on this. By now I'm the sole Smalltalk developer (devops?) of the company. Time has never been more scarce than nowadays. Why Pharo? * Because it is the best open source Smalltalk ("inspired") out there. * Because I have 10+ years of experience with Smalltalk I can't throw away in the context of rapid prototyping and business domain modelling (emphasis on this). * It was a key advantage during the negotiations, we could show a wireframed live app even before our competition prepared a PowerPoint presentation. The development process with Pharo has been rudimentary, only Monticello packages and a couple of workspace scripts to provision new images. I still can't get my head around Metacello. But honestly I haven't dedicated as much time as it needs to be learnt. Having used VAST ENVY's ConfigurationMaps successfully in the past is a proof I can learn Metacello. During the last years at InfOil we were using git with Dolphin Smalltalk, with CI after every git push to the main repo. This was also linked with our issue tracking system, in order to know in which build a certain issue was fixed. We used Dolphin's PAX's files (CVS friendly), Gitlab, JetBrain's TeamCity and YouTrack I'd like to do the same using Monticello's FileTree, BitBucket and JIRA (CI server to be defined). Hopefully with some time, I'll be able to dive deeper into this. My learning of Pharo tooling hasn't been straightforward, but maybe because I'm old and spoiled with other Smalltalk dialects (VSE, VAST, Dolphin). I was managing the Android code (java) with git branching and merging way before I learnt how to use Monticello. Managing the code (files) was the only advantage of working with Eclipse/Java. Everything else was a burden compared with Pharo. I wanted to share my experiences through a blog, but haven't had time to set it up as I'd like, and by now this email is going to be all I can share. Is RBClassNotReferencedRule ~200x slower in Pharo 4 vs Pharo 3 ?

I think I'm setting this up wrong in Pharo 4 but am not sure. I use the following code for the test: rule:=RBClassNotReferencedRule new. environment:=RBBrowserEnvironment new forPackageNames: #('MyPackage'). AndreasSystemProfiler spyOn:[RBSmalllintChecker runRule: rule onEnvironment: environment] In Pharo 4 it spends most of the time in Behavior>>#includesDefinedSelector:ofClassName: and takes 300s. In Pharo 3 its only 1.5 s Is there something that can be done to get Pharo 4 up to the speed of Pharo 3? Thanks Paul

Mongo lost references - bug?

If you file in the code below, the method >>testDemo creates a simple model: Paper has 1:1 reference to Planet. Paper has 1:1 reference to Star. Star has 1:N reference to Planet. Star has 1:1 reference to Paper. Planet has 1:1 reference to Paper. If you run >>testDemo, you see that the model which was created is ok with all its references. Help regarding Scroll Pane usage

troubles with JNIPort on Pharo 5 / Java 8

Hi, I am having trouble running JNIPort with Pharo 5 and Java 8 on Mac OS X 10.10.4. The code loads fine: Gofer new smalltalkhubUser: 'JNIPort' project: 'JNIPort'; configuration; loadVersion: '3.0-alpha'. However, I do not know where to point "JNIPortJNIInterface libraryFile:" to. In the original instructions for Java 1.6, the code looked like: JNIPortJNIInterface libraryFile: '/System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk/Contents/Libraries/libclient.dylib' With JDK 1.8 (and even 1.7), the file organization seems to be different and the libclient.dylib does not exist. I tried to point it to libjli.dylib, which looks similar, but that does not seem to work: JNIPortJNIInterface libraryFile: '/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk1.8.0_45.jdk/Contents/MacOS/libjli.dylib'. Hi Noury, Thanks for the link to the documentation. I have managed to get up and running now - very cool! One question. When I execute 1+1 on the Pharo (pink) playground, I see the code appearing in the web browser log, but it doesn't appear to execute. I'm trying to imitate the way it is done with Countries. Download only metainfo about mcz when selected

Hello Lots of times I want to take a quick look at what is new in external packages I use, therefore I open repository in monticello, click at mcz and look at commit note. However, most of the times I want just to look at it, the commit time, author and note, not load whole mcz with its content. VM Crash after adding ram

So I've just upgraded my Ubuntu 14.04 machine to 16 gig of ram from 8 gig of ram and suddenly I can no longer start my Pharo VM; I don't understand why adding ram would make the vm stop working, I've been using it for year without problems. Linux Install -- problems, but eventually successful

Hi all, I've been having trouble getting *any* sort of Smalltalk working on Linux. But ultimately I got Pharo (my first choice) working on Debian Jessie. It wasn't terribly hard in the end, but since the instructions at http://pharo.org/gnu-linux-installation#64-bit-System-Setup seem to be out of date, I thought it might be helpful to post something in case those in charge of that page would like to update. Since there is no issue tracker, I assume this is a good a place as any. ## Short Version ## * sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386 * sudo apt-get update * sudo apt-get install lib32zl lib32ncurses5 Note that there is no ia32-libs package on Jessie, as far as I can tell. (I have no idea whether you actually need to install lib32ncurses5, but those were what apt-get suggested, and it worked.) I do have a startup error -- "MessageNotUnderstood: EmbeddedFreeTypeFontInstaller>>failedToOpen:Index:" -- but it doesn't seem to break anything. ## Longer version / Rant ## Pharo turned out to be impossible on my netbook (where I would like to use it, sadly) because it is still running Crunchbang, which is Debian Woody under the hood. So in theory the fix from the 64bit install page should work. It doesn't, though -- some sort of problem with #! I suppose "The following packages have unmet dependacies: ia32-libs: Depends: ia32-libs-i386" Squeak, as downloaded from their site, has exactly the same problem. Pharo isn't in the Debian Repository, but an old version of the Squeak VM -- *just* the VM -- is. (Not sure what the point of that is.) It doesn't work with the current Squeak image from the website. I did eventually manage to get a compatible image ... via FTP. Good grief. (Good enough to learn the ropes, I suppose.) I really didn't want to go the Gnu Smalltalk road, but in desperation I tried it. Under both Crunchbang and Debian Jessie, the gst-browser package falls over immediately when you start it, a great big error trace I won't bother to paste here. These are packages in the *repository*. Is no-one maintaining them? The point of this rant is to give context to the following: thank you. Really, thank you, to the folks behind Pharo and everyone reading this. This is the problem with FOSS: blink, and yesterday's rave technology is gone. And Smalltalk is *important* -- I'm not a Smalltalk programmer, but every time I play with it I learn so much about OOP, programming, and good design of classes. And I keep coming back to try to work with it again, because it offers things I want and just can't get elsewhere. The idea that Smalltalk might one day just ... not run? Not worth thinking about. Does RBImplementedButNotSent result in any critics for any of you?

It seems like its not testing for the right conditions any more and therefore not finding any messages that are implemented but not sent. I think this and the problem I was having the other day is from removing the use of the RBSmallLintContext class from checking criitcs issues. Why did you decide to do that?

Ah, yes, by 'offline' I did mean outside of the mailing list, but that was purely out of consideration for the list. If the list wants to hear it, far be it from me to keep it from them. For my part, I am a graduate student working on my dissertation, and I have been trying to build tools to facilitate that as I go, from taking and sharing notes, to visualizing primary material, to (eventually) organizing and writing the dissertation. I have been following Offray's updates with interest, as I think my goals are very much allied, but I am starting in a slightly different place, if I have understood correctly (research and organizing, and not yet writing, sharing, or publishing). My efforts thus far have been concentrated in two repositories: Chancery (http://smalltalkhub.com/#!/~EvanDonahue/Chancery) is an early prototype for a note taking system. I am coming from taking notes in emacs org-mode, and so Chancery right now is the most straightforward collapsable tree outliner/note taker that could give me functionality basically equivalent to what I had in org-mode, and serve as a platform to co-evolve my research methods and their supporting technology. The near-term goals for this involve adding metadata (authors, dates, etc) to the sources I am annotating and using that for various kinds of historical visualization (and further, attendant annotation) eg who wrote what when, referencing who, influenced by what, etc), and can I edit all that directly in its graphical form. The status of this project is that it is usable by myself and those I have worked with on it (and I use it as my primary note taking system), but I'm not sure what it would look like to someone loading it at the moment (no real intro/docs, as it was just a quick prototype to provoke further design discussion). Trantor (http://smalltalkhub.com/#!/~EvanDonahue/Trantor) is a disttributed p2p system for incrementally keeping data structures in sync between multiple, asynchronously connected pharo instances across the internet without requiring human attention to resolve merge conflicts (think laptos where data is edited offline and then automatically synced when they connect to one another); it is my answer to sharing and collaboration for things created in Chancery (although it is a more general purpose project). Functionally, Trantor provides a set of common datatypes (set, dict, text blob, etc) and a means to run nodes and peer them for synchronization of said datatypes. The goal with respect to Chancery/personal information management is being able to easily grab some structured set of notes or writing out of the note taking system and share it with collaborators or colleagues with a button click, and without having to go through the whole export/send/manage versions dance. This project is about 85% complete, the proof of concept works, it just needs a big refactor to make it usable and quash some bugs. I guess my observations on using Pharo thus far are first, that it is absolutely ideal for evolving prototypes, since you get a sort of poor man's gui and persistance (object inspector + image serialization) basically for free, which is 90% of the work of such a simple information management app prototype. I have a fully functional tree outliner at a point when in another language I would still be trying to hack a low functionality command line interface. The other thing I've found refreshing is that my application can live as one among many within the image, sharing data with other programs by passing objects around in a way that is impossible to do with a standalone application running on a modern operating system. the dream of the web is, I think, heading more in this direction, but working with the browser (as I was before I came to pharo) requires coordinating a separate server process, compressing everything into http/html/json, and a host of other problems that vanish when you can just serialize objects between pharo instances. In short, I'm getting a lot done in this language and I expect I'll be around for a while. Cheers, Evan

AST visualization with Roassal

Hi, everyone! First of all, using Roassal is fun and effective :) But while working on AST visualization I found that sometimes Roassal builds wrong tree layout (or maybe I'm just doing something wrong). Recoverying a crashed Moose image/Pharo5

Hello, I have a Moose 6.0 image with several Playgrounds. Since this morning, exactly when I want to make a demo[1], it crashes immediately. I remember yesterday I got an error when saving, Pharo said something like 'This error should not happen'. The OS windows open then close almost immediately (dump included). Could it be related to Athens or FreeType plugin access? The image went about 113MB. The used VM works fine with a fresh Moose6.0 image. Btw, the http://www.moosetechnology.org/ is down right now. I would like to recover the script codes in the playgrounds, is there a way to access it? FileLocator problem?

Hello Out of curiosity I tried to run the snippet which Alexandre Bergel posted yesterday under the name 'Script of the day'. It failed, but nothing to do with the script itself. The problem is that it fails on the line: 'FileLocator documents allChildren.' The debugger message is "Directory does not exist: Path 'C:' / 'Users' / 'Peter' / 'Documents' / 'My Music'." Tracing through the debugger output, I conclude that the same error will arise with the directories 'My Pictures' and 'My Videos'. One thing these directories have in common is that they are empty, so as a test I copied a small text file into 'My Music', but this made no difference. I have a vague recollection that 'My Music' etc., although presented by Windows as conventional directories, are in fact some sort of pseudo-directories constructed as required by Windows Explorer, but I am not too sure about this. Could this be an explanation of the problem? It's not an urgent problem for me; it can easily be worked round by ensuring that I never try to locate files in these directories. But if it is a bug, it might be relevant to someone else. My environment is Windows 7 Professional, running Moose 5.1 (Pharo4.0 Latest update: #40613). Thanks for any help Peter Kenny

Font with many Unicode glyphs to display code -- IPA?

Hi to all, As you may know I'm working on in some improvements for the String class. Until now I implemented some missing tests. Right now I'm looking forward to add new methods that could be useful based on Ruby API ( http://www.ruby-doc.org/core-2.1.0/String.html) These are a few of the methods that I'm planning to implement: - chomp(separator=$/) -> new_str - chop() -> new_str - ljust(integer, padstr='') ->new_str - next -> new_str - partition(sep) -> [head, sep, tail] Could you help to find out if these methods are already available for the String class? Glamour Table action on single cell?

Hi Again I'm wondering if its possible to have a double click (#strongSelection) action on single cells within a composite table. Basically I'd like to double click a value and be able to edit it (by whatever means I deem necessary). A lot of this is because I have a need to deal with unknown data, unknown values, in sets of unknown sizes. I'm trying to build stuff to be as dynamic as possible. Loading code from a local git repository

Hello, I am trying to version a project on git using filetree. Since I also have some external resources (like images), I would avoid loading the whole project from the pharo image, because that would download the external files in a cache directory, thus making them difficult to reach and update. My idea is to update the git repository from the commandline, and then run a script to build the image. The question then is: is there an easy way to programmatically load a project from a local directory? Also, do you have any suggestions for a better workflow to handle this situation? Glamour Tabs not updated when update is called

Hi Al Not sure if this is a bug, but here goes. Looking through the Glamour examples in Pharo4 I come across the Updateable Browser example. This example has a line that, when the collection is greater than 1, shows a list tab, the title of which is List, col size printString. This indeed comes up and shows: 'List: 2' but if you continue to add, it doesn't change. The text will change but not the title. I came across this when I couldn't get my browser to add tabs, even though entity gets updated. Announcments vs Events schism

Hi, is there a good reason why not just rename Announcement to Event since everyone is calling it that anyways? Everybody (almost irrespective of language) understands what an event, whilst Announcement is a new vocabulary. Most people when subclassing will anyways do Announcement subclass: MyEvent and so forth. Is there a benefit in naming it Announcement? Doesn't it just add more confusion? For example Bloc has Announcement subclass: #BlAbstractEvent and Announcement subclass: #BlMorphAnnouncement whilst Event is clearly favored. BlMorphAnnouncement allSubclasses size. Using geographic data

Hi All, I would like to get some advice regarding which path I should take. Problem: Given a coordinate I want to know to which geographical object it belongs to. Path 1 Using Glorp to make a query to a Postgis instance containing the boundaries of the geobjects Path 2 Use the data form GADM data (according to this thread <http://forum.world.st/PostGIS-in-Pharo-td4802233.html>). I would avoid path 1 in order to avoid installation of postgi. From the thread mentioned above, I thing that it requires some development. Regarding Path 2, I don't see which framework or library should I use to import and query the data contained in the KMZ from GADM. Any advice is welcome. Best regards. Art

Hello, Is it possible with NativeBoost to create a binding for a variadic function ? I've seen the printf example in NBCPrinter but this implementation is kind of cheating since it always pass just a %s as format and one already formatted string to the C function. I've written a simple variadic function which adds every integer it receives as argument (first argument is for the number of following arguments) : int add(int number,...); In Pharo I've tried something like this : *add: *number *arg1: *first *arg2: *second > <primitive: #primitiveNativeCall module: #NativeBoostPlugin> > > ^ self nbCall: #( int add (int number, int first, int second)) > module: 'libMyLib.so' > and it works fine with two arguments. Pharo is an excellent environment for building interactive applications. In part 4 of this series, I take a look at a planning tool for time slot based planning. This is not so common in software development, but is used a lot in simple and complicated contexts. In the example, there are 4 rooms that can be scheduled between 8:00 and 18:00 at a granularity of 5 minutes. An element panel is added as a new kind of drag panel containing prototypes of the tasks that can be planned. Here the prototypes are no longer the squares from the earlier drag panels, their height depends on the amount of time they take. Hello. Is there any software projects/libraries for personal wiki (something like ZIM or CherryTree or Orgmode for writing texts/notes) and personal information managing in Pharo? I think that Pharo would be great for this kind of software, because it would provide rich scripting options. Also the idea of representing informations as objects is really great. For example; now I keep list of books I read in DSV file. With this SW, I could have a list of objects representing the books, which could be sorted or rendered to lower level protocols, like DSV/XML/whatever. Dear Pharo users, I'm so excited to introduce you a project I'm currently working on which is called "Ephemeric cloud". It is a very simple and fast way to publish your Images to the web. Basically to publish a Smalltalk Image you just need to call a usual HTTP POST request to Pharocloud Ephemeric API and you'll get a hostname in response. Class side vs instance side

Hi, I am trying to figure out where to best place some mapping/data/stable methods. For example imagine method ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ MyRectangle>>oppositeSides ^ { #top -> #bottom. #bottom -> #top. #topLeft -> #bottomRight .... } asDictionary ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ And then the class might have some other related methods such as ~~~~~~~~~~~ MyRectangle>>oppositeSideFor: aSide ^ self oppositeSides at: aSide ~~~~~~~~~~~~ So it's a method returning a mapping between opposite sides/corners and thus is really not going to change. Now I could place this in instance-side and create a new instance every time I wanted to use it (which doesn't seem practical), or I could put it in class-side. The problem I have with class-side is that naming is more like going through minefield (more than once I corrupted my image by naming a method or variable something I shouldn't have), and for whatever reason it feels like either metaprogramming or procedural programmming... That class side methods are pretty much global functions/variables... and short of constructors I am avoiding static methods even in other languages... but maybe using it is ok. Or maybe have it object an use singleton? The only oop-like approach I see would be to extend symbols (#top oppositeSide), or have separate objects for sides, but that seems like overkill. MySide subclass: #Top Top>>oppositeSide ^ Bottom new Are there any best practices regarding this? This is also true for actual data stored in methods/attributes (such as icons). P.s.: For english natives... Should the second method be ned "oppositeSideOf:" or "oppositeSideFor:"? Any ideas/pointers appreciated, Peter

deprecating classes

Hi, is there a mechanism for deprecating whole classes? For example there's class RTResizEable that has been replaced by RTResizable (without extra "e") class. But if I don't want to break people's code I would like to tell them that they should use something else. I could mark every method with "self deprecated:" but that's a bit tedious... And doing it with a script (rewritting all methods to add the statement) is dangerous, because it can be part of UI loop, so it will blow up the image with warnings. An idea might be to instead of opening Warning dialog with debug... to create a "Deprecations Browser" (which has only one instance so if you attempt to open it again while it is still opened nothing will happen). And in the Deprecations Browser would be list of triggered deprecations... maybe something like "Announcements tab" in Announcer inspector... That way even deprecations in UI loops will just add a hundred rows to a single window instead of opening hundred windows. (And there would be also opportunity for not showing duplicates.) You get a debugger at the position if the halt in the code. Meaning the exception block run more than once. And it would run forever. I am currently getting a StartUp error on VERSION=development (40) The error is as follows: *The symbolic version '0.1-baseline' is not defined in ConfigurationOfsQuick_new for the current platform. Modeling Money Units

There are several tools: Aconcagua, Money, Units; and at least two classes to overcome the imprecision of Floats: ScaledDecimal, FixedDecimal... I found one thread where Hernan said they use Aconcagua [1], another from Squeak implying that ScaledDecimal is broken [2]. A third seemed to say that FixedDecimal would be better [3], which I hadn't heard in the handful of times money has been discussed on list (usually ScaledDecimal comes up). For a simple case where someone wanted to write a small personal accounting app, which tool and which type would be the best place to start? Thanks! The data are hosted on Firebase. The iPhone app can set the time, and control start/pause. The web apps count down by themselves, but the start/stop/reset signalling is done in real time by the Firebase server. So, if you imagine a timer that is set to run for 45 minutes, we would need to signal start to the image. That would be reflected to all connected clients via wss, and then, for example, stopped with 5 minutes to go. We would need the app to remain live whilst a timer was running. However, we don't use the timers all the time, so keeping the whole app live might burn up more of the server's resources than necessary. Cheers Andy

Mike, that sounds really interesting. Will the instances support websocket connections, and if so, will that stop them from sleeping, i.e. if I had an app that sent out news updates via wss every 15 minutes to any listening clients, could it just continue to run, or does it have to receive a get/post request every 30 mins? Multiple sockets listening on same port

Hi, A number of times I ran into the situation where I started a http server but forgot that an other one was already running. This resulted strange behavior and led to confusion. The Socket class doesn't detect that the given port is already bound to an other socket. socket1 := Socket newTCP. socket1 listenOn: 9999. socket2 := Socket newTCP. socket2 listenOn: 9999. "I expected this to fail" Both sockets are in WaitinForConnection status and isValid returns true. Is this normal? Hi I have been using ExampleBuilderMorph and ExpanderMorph to build a accordion widget to display the search results of my application *searchQuick* which returns the list of file titles from the pre-loaded text files present in the resource folder when a string is searched for. Moose to analyse Java code

Hello, A friend told me one of his student need to understand the flow of OpenStreepMap java code. Of course I told him about Moose, but I am not sure I provide him enough guidance to get his student started with moose (zero knowledge). What will be the practical step to get started for a total novice on Moose/Pharo (I can give the initial step related to the Pharo environment, so no need to mention it) ? If such information exists, just point it to me, but I did not find after a small search. I just read it is possible (http://www.humane-assessment.com/blog/moose-custom-analyses-made-easy/) but I bet such step by step guidance, will be very useful to let novice on Pharo get started and is a way to attract more easily new users. Seeking help on morphs : expander and scrolls

Hi I am using Expander Morphs to display some search results. I am finding it hard to insert a scroll bar in text displayed after expanding the title of the search result. The corresponding code snippet is as: *dialog newRow: {* *(* * (* * dialog newExpander: r title asString* * forAll: { dialog newText: r content asString . }* * )minWidth:600; minHeight: 10* *)cellInset: 0;* * borderStyle: (BorderStyle inset baseColor: dialog paneColor; width: 1)* * } * I basically need to add a scroll-able content in '*newText*:' portion. Hi, when I wanted to see package changes in Pharo 5 (with GitFileTree from MetaRepoFor5.0 / loadDevelopment) it died on MCMczReader class>>canReadFileNamed: fileName because "fileName" is actually instance of GitFileTreePackageEntry is it broken, or did I break something? Thanks, Peter

The main thing I am wondering about is how to build portable interfaces. My ideal situation would be to use something like Spec to prototype within Pharo, and then generate something similar in JS. Alternatively, perhaps we could create mock objects for something like jquery-ui. Noury, have you done any experiments with this? Cheers Andy

Hello everyone, I know, I come up with another question involving NativeBoost ... Sorry ! Anyway, I am currently trying to improve the performance of a Pharo application by trying to rewrite some parts in C and use them with NativeBoost. In the application, there is a need to compute a lot of 2D projections of points so basically I need to compute a lot of cosinuses and sinuses on different points. Ultimately I'd like to do it with openMP to use all the processor cores but for now I just wanted to do some tests to find the best way to combine Pharo and C. The first test consisted in writing a very simple C function and use it from inside Pharo : void project (Point *p) { p->x = cos(p->x); p->y = sin(p->y); } with typedef struct { double x; double y; } Point; In Pharo I created a NBExternalStructure to match Point and everything worked as expected. Now I ran some performance tests and there are some results I don't really understand :( 1) First test was : test | t1 t2 tC tPharo | tC := 0. tPharo := 0. 1 to: 1000000 do: [ :i | | p1 | p1 := Point x: i + (1.0 / i ) y: i - (1.0 / i). t1 := Time microsecondsToRun: [ p1 setX: p1 x cos setY: p1 y sin. ] tPharo := tPharo + t1. ] 1 to: 1000000 do: [ :i | | p2 | p2 := MyPoint x: i + (1.0 / i ) y: i - (1.0 / i). t2 := Time microsecondsToRun: [ self primProject: p2. ] tC := tC + t2. ] Results here are arround 185 ms for tC and 210 ms for tPharo. Nothing really bothered me with this test as results seemed coherent (are they ?). 2) Second test was : test2 | tC tPharo array1 array2 size | size := 1000000. array1 := Array new: size. array2 := Array new: size. 1 to: size do: [ :i | array1 at: i put: (Point x: i + (1.0 / i ) y: i - (1.0 / i)). array2 at: i put: (MyPoint x: i + (1.0 / i ) y: i - (1.0 / i)). ]. tPharo := Time millisecondsToRun: [ array1 do: [ :each | each setX: each x cos setY: each y sin. ]. ]. tC := Time millisecondsToRun: [ array2 do: [ :each | self primProject: each. ]. ]. Results here are arround 3 500 ms for tPharo and 150ms for tC. And I don't really understand why such a difference. I've tried doing tC first but it changed nothing. I've checked the results and the contents of array2 are all updated correctly. Is there a problem with tC or tPharo ? What am I doing wrong ? On another hand, I also noticed that it is faster to allocate the array with Pharo Points than the array with MyPoint C-ish struct. I did some more testing and it seemed that on a general basis it is faster to manipulate Pharo objects than C-ish structs or pointers. For example, it is faster to read in a Pharo array than to read in a NativeBoost_to_C array. Knowing so, what kind of C types should I use to avoid losing too much time manipulating them with NativeBoost ? Is it preferable, for example, to use two separate double instead of a struct with two doubles inside ? Thank you very much, Matthieu

NativeBoost and OpenMP

Hello, I haven't really seen anything related to this on the Internet and maybe some people will find it cool so I just wanted to report one thing I found out today : NativeBoost works great with OpenMP ! I wrote a C function twice, once with openMP and once without. I made 32 bits libraries and used them from inside Pharo with NativeBoost. When using the non - openMP library, only one core was used but when using the openMP library, both my cores were used and the time it took to run was really divided by (a little bit less than) 2 ! That's just me but i find it really cool :p Cheers, Matthieu
