Hi, I played a bit with ZnServer and other zinc components and have a question I can't answer myself (googling a bit didn't help neither), and I'm seeking for advice: does it makes sense to use a ZnServer/ZnWebSocket as a mechanism to transfer data between two pharo processes - in my case 8k ByteArray blocks ? Or is it a total non sense ? is it reliable ? First tests looks good : 18k blocks / second (145 Mb/s) on a laptop core i5 2.6Ghz. All comments and suggestions welcome Thanks in advance, Alain

Testing Traits?

Iâve sort of padded around the edges of Traits, and decided to reread the papers and better understand them. One thing that occurs to me - if you want to test your traits, is the only suggested mechanism to test them in-situ with the classes that use them OR can you poof one up and test it by explicitly pumping in something that would represent âselfâ in its usage? Or is this the wrong question - and would you view Traits as a refactoring exercise - so you write tests for a concrete class first - and then extract them into a Trait keeping the tests running? This has the thorny side effect - which like inheritance, means that ultimately you have to test a BaseClass with all its concrete subclasses (so do you have to do the same with traits? As you may have overridden something you didnât intend?). I thought maybe the paper - âReusing and Composing Tests with Traitsâ might discuss this angle, but it doesnât cover it. Any thoughts/pointers? Tim

Configurations based on version of Pharo

Hello In our project we have different versions of packages for Pharo 3 and Pharo 4. I would like to make ConfigurationOfOURPROJECT which will automatically detect Pharo version and use correct package. I tried development: spec <symbolicVersion: #development> spec for: #'Pharo4.0' version: 'Pharo4'. spec for: #'Pharo4.x' version: 'Pharo4'. spec for: #'Pharo3.0' version: 'Pharo3'. spec for: #'Pharo3.x' version: 'Pharo3' but it does not understand this 'PharoNumber' condition, it always looks for #'common' in both Pharo 3 and 4. If I insert line spec for: #'common' version: 'Pharo4', it always uses that one and loads version Pharo4, even in Pharo 3. inaccuracy in drawing?

Hello, I have noted inaccuracy when drawing circle (seen screenshot with circle and tangent line intersecting circle in two points and not one). I looked at my code with possible rounding error related to a mix of float and integer, I pay attention to convert to float when needed, but I can't fix the situation. Can it be related to Athens ? #quitSession

Hello, I would like to change the behavior of Pharo when the user clicks on the close button of the host window. So far it looks like #quitSession is sended from somewhere, but I fail to see the chain of call between the host window and the #quitSession message. Any idea? Smalltalks 2014 Pharo Attendants (Meeting/Sprint?)

Is anybody here going to 2014's edition of Smalltalks in Cordoba, Argentina? I saw Jannik listed in one of the talks, maybe anybody else is comming and we can arrange a Pharo Sprint or similar (I've never been in a Pharo sprint). Esteban A. Maringolo ps: If anybody is hesitating, Cordoba is a beautiful city, and once you pay the air tickets, local expenditures are really cheap in terms of foreign currency.

Glorp + NBSQLite3

Hello, I am pleased to report that I have gotten Glorp working with NBSQLite3 enough to run Sven's Reddit.st. Smalltalk based unikernels

Hello, I'm playing with the unikernels idea [1]. Specifically I'm using Mirage OS [2] to probe a minimal HTTP server running on AWS directly over Xen, without any OS between the application and the hypervisor. Mirage OS is based on OCaml. Is there any Smalltalk solution to build this kind of unikernels? The idea of Smalltalk all the way down (at least to the virtual devices of the hypervisor) is very appealing to me. Indeed I think this idea was proposed for the first time by Dan Ingalls: ''An operating system is a collection of things that don't fit into a language. There shouldn't be one.'' I have found SqueakNOS [3], but I don't know if it is active or if it works with Pharo. BLOG: Block Translators - parsing magic

All, I just finished a blog entry. It shows how to use Smalltalk blocks as parsers/translators. E.g. translating a Block [:customer | (customer joinDate year is: Date today year)] into an SQL-like String (YEAR(customers.joinDate) = 2014) The SQL stuff is just an example - you can create nearly any output.
