mouse buttons in Linux, deleting certain morphs
by Sven Crouse April 13, 2011

April 13, 2011

Hi list. On a Linux host with default mouse mappings in X ( "Button Left"=1, "Button Middle"=2, "Button Right"=3 ) is there a setting to enable the Right Button as blue button without requiring the control key ? Regardless, I'm unable to delete certain morphs ( e.g. RectangleMorph, EllipseMorph ) in the World using the CTRL right-mouse button. To reproduce create a RectangleMorph in the World and try to delete interactively. Sven

Code Navigation: Navigation History in System Browser?
by Nick Chen April 12, 2011

April 12, 2011

Hi I was browsing through the draft chapter for Pharo By Example describing the Omnibrowser architecture (https://gforge.inria.fr/frs/download.php/27418/Omnibrowser.pdf) One of the screenshots (Figure 1.5 in the PDF) shows a browser with Back, Forward and History Buttons i.e. navigation history features. My specific questions: 1) What happened to this version of the browser? Is it possible to load the navigation history feature into the latest version of Pharo? I am currently using Pharo 1.2 2) The paper "Tackling Software Navigation Issues of the Smalltalk IDE" by Röthlisberger et al (http://www.bergel.eu/download/papers/Berg09d-SmalltalkIDE.pdf) implemented several useful features for code navigation in the Smalltalk IDE. Was their work ever ported to Pharo? Hopefully the authors of the paper are reading this list and can comment. The paper was very interesting for me because it described and proposed solutions for problems that I have encountered with code navigation in Smalltalk. Thanks! -- Nick -- View this message in context: http://forum.world.st/Code-Navigation-Navigation-History-in-System-Browser-… Sent from the Pharo Smalltalk Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

This was the first tutorial I read and it was really nice. Thanks a lot for this. Besides a revision of all chapters, we have especially changed the persistence chapter and added new sections about SandstoneDB, PostgreSQL, and GemStone. Most of the update was done by Lauritz Thamsen and Tobias Pape. Thank you very much. If you have any feedback, please let us know. Help with TreeListMorph
by Adrien BARREAU April 12, 2011

April 12, 2011

Hi, I'm taking a look at the FileDialogWindow: FileDialogWindow new open. On the left, there is a tree. With the halo, I know it is a TreeListMorph. Here is my question: How can I know what is happening when I click on one of the little arrows which are just on the left of a directory name? With my changes, the subtree is very slow to be displayed and I don't understand what is called. Adrien.

ZincHTTPComponents ported to Gemstone
by Paul DeBruicker April 10, 2011

April 10, 2011

Hi - I ported the latest Zinc-HTTP client and server to Gemstone. There is still an issue with logging on Gemstone that I plan to resolve soon but for the most part the client and server perform the same on each platform. The ConfigurationOfZincHTTPComponents here: http://www.squeaksource.com/ZincHTTPComponents will load the Zinc code into both Pharo and Gemstone. I have not looked at the Seaside adapter code yet, so it may or may not work out of the box. Paul

1.2.1 Windows no-no
by Robert Shiplett April 9, 2011

April 9, 2011

I just inspected the pharo LNK file of my new C:\Pharo-1.2.1-CogOneClick.app and it is set to start in "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\OneClick.app" WRONG! I am logged in as another user and not as Administrator ( which on XP I only enter from Safe Mode ) Pharo might be okay using my C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data I have reset the LNK as starting in C:\Pharo-1.2.1-CogOneClick.app\Contents\Resources and reset the TARGET to C:\Pharo-1.2.1-CogOneClick.app\Contents\Windows\Squeak.exe pharo.image Some Windows users would not be amused to see this Administrator ... as all too often spyware goes where it does not belong ... especially on Corp desktops. If we use an sh for Linux, why can't we use a simple BAT for Windows? Or a README advising to set an ini file ? What is worst above is that OneClick.app could be Squeak, Pharo and is it Pharo 1.1, 1.2 ... Or am I mistaken/misguided/misinformed ? 3M ( I was in Minnesota for years ... )

Help (perfect for newcomers) migrating a technical FAQ
by Mariano Martinez Peck April 9, 2011

April 9, 2011

Hi folks. I had a good idea and and it perfect for someone that wants to help and don't know how. It is not the most entertained task, but I promise you will learn a lot. Mostly, if you are newcomer. The idea is basically to migrate the FAQ that is here: http://scg.unibe.ch/wiki/faq/pharofaq to a new section in the collaborative Pharo book: http://book.pharo-project.org/ So....any takers ? Let us know so that we generate a new user in the Book The idea is also to check whether what is says is still correct for pharo or if it needs an update. Or even how to improve it (from the view of a newcomer). Thanks Mariano

creating a Rectangle
by Andre Hora April 7, 2011

April 7, 2011

Hello, To create a Rectangle in Pharo with the method Rectangle>>origin:corner:, you must provide the top left and the bottom right points. With others you have a Rectangle with area equals to zero. I just noticed that in VW it is possible create a Rectangle with other points (bottom right and top left, bottom left and top right, ...). So, shouldn't Pharo Rectangle allow the same? regards, -- Andre Hora

[ANN] Pharo Release 1.2.1
by Adrian Lienhard April 7, 2011

April 7, 2011

The Pharo Project is proud to announce the release of Pharo 1.2.1, the third major release of this clean, innovative, open-source Smalltalk environment. Static URL for this ANN: http://www.pharo-project.org/pharo-download/release-1-2-1 French translation: http://code.google.com/p/pharo/wiki/Pharo12FrenchAnnouncement * Update #12345 On Tuesday, March 29th 2011, update #12345 was issued to Pharo's 1.2 development line, a line that started back in June 2010 and was frozen in January 2011. Next, Pharo's continuous integration machinery successfully started building various artifacts based on this 'Pharo Core 1.2', the most important one being 'Pharo 1.2' proper, the full featured development image. Pharo Core 1.2.1 passes 7.836 unit tests, Pharo 1.2.1 no less than 10.760. A large, international community of developers worked hard for several months to iron out all problems and to make Pharo compatible with various Smalltalk libraries and frameworks, among them Seaside 3.0.3 which passes its 1.599 tests. * Pharo Core Changes True to the Pharo philosophy, this release contains numerous small changes, refactorings, cleanups and bugfixes improving the overall quality. Important changes include: â Cleaned the Pluggable hierarchy â Added new undo framework â Cleaned Morph and PasteUpMorph â Added DummyUIManager, a UIManager for operating without a UI â Added NewTextMorph â Removed left overs from MVC: PopUpMenu, SelectionMenu and CustomMenu â Cleaned Utilities, Preferences and TheWorldMenu â Included SimpleMorphic preview â Removing empty classes â Added new TextEditor and SmalltalkEditor â Added new, clean and simple Glamorous, Glamorous Orange GUI Themes â Added new Pro GUI Theme â Added Cog compliant behavior â Added better blocks debugging â Better support for separating SmalltalkImage and SystemDictionary â Fixed package dependencies, providing a good platform for kernel images â Removed old JIT experiments â Migrated to MethodReferenceWithSource and friends â Added more pages under the Help system â Improved the number of commented classes â New Finder tool (replacing Messages Names and Method Finder) â New Recent Changes tool (replacing Recent Submissions) â Improved SpaceTally â Fixed pointer finders tools â Integrated SUnit 4 Started Continuous Integration: use Hudson/Jenkins to automatically build images, run tests, and compile VMs For the Core 1.2 Image development line, 693 issues were resolved. * Pharo Changes The full featured Pharo development image is built automatically by loading the Metacello configuration aptly called ConfigurationOfPharo. Important changes include: â Updated to latest Metacello and all configurations used to use symbolic versions â New tools: Metacello Configuration Browser, Memory Monitor, and Autotest â Updated versions of Shout, RoelTyper, OCompletion, OmniBrowser, AutomaticMethodCategorizer, RefactoringBrowsers, Nile, ProfStef â Added XML-Support, and more Help â Removed NewInspector For the Full Dev 1.2 Image development line, 57 issues were resolved. * Downloads: see http://www.pharo-project.org/pharo-download * Success Stories Pharo has a large user base spread all over the world. Hence there is a growing collection of success stories (www.pharo-project.org/about/success-stories) projects using Pharo that choose to go public with this. Recently, the following were added: DrGeo - an award winning interactive geometry application also used for teaching primary and secondary level students Issys Tracking - a workflow platform to support authorization procedures for the medical practice for a large social organization/health insurance in Argentina Inceptive's Custom ERP - an application for the event planning and resource management administration of a large cultural centre in Flanders __________________________ www.adrian-lienhard.ch twitter.com/adrianlienhard

Turn off auto-completion
by Tim Johnson April 5, 2011

April 5, 2011

Hi, I don't like how the browser/editor thinks it is smarter than me (even if it is). How do I completely turn off the "feature" of it inserting an extra ' whenever I myself type an ' ? I really, really hate that. I've gone through the preferences and tried turning off anything related to eCompletion and Shout, and I've tried changing the system default browser. The darn thing is still making me navigate around these extra 's which is just not how I code. I feel like I've asked this question here before, like two years ago. In any case, I again gave up and went back to Squeak which does not force this upon me. If it is your intention to allow users to turn this off, it would be nice to know how that is accomplished. Thanks again, Tim

Code Critics for unloaded projects

Hi list, I have a pretty special need, which is to be able to run code critics on projects that have not yet been loaded into the image. For example, I need to browse an st file -or a squeaksource project- and before loading it I want to run critics on it, would this be possible somehow? If it looks like something noone would need to do, I understand. It's just that the project I'm working on is pretty particular... I've been exploring other possibilities but I'm afraid this is one of the few left for me to think of :( Thanks a lot in advance! Bernat Romagosa.
