Hi! Since some of us are deep into the VM memory model. Can we take this opportunity to have a reliable execution interruption mechanism? Cheers, Alexandre -- _,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;: Alexandre Bergel http://www.bergel.eu ^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;.

pillar question
by Clément Bera Dec. 30, 2015

Dec. 30, 2015

Is this the right place to ask questions about pillar ? I am trying to write documentation using pillar. I am now stuck at conditional printing and on the contrary to my previous issues I didn't find examples in other documentation written in pillar. In latex, I would do conditional printing this way: \newif \ifsol \sol true \ifsol paragraph display if sol is true \fi and depending if I put true or false in the variable sol, the paragraph is displayed or not. Then I can print two version of my document with different texts at specific parts depending on this variable. I tried multiple ways in pillar, but I can't achieve the same result. What is the right way to do conditional printing in pillar ? Thanks ! Clement

[OT] Dolphin 7 opensourced
by Torsten Bergmann Dec. 29, 2015

Dec. 29, 2015

Hi, just as an info and in case you missed it but might be interested: Dolphin Smalltalk for Windows 7 will be released open source (MIT licensed) on GitHub today ([1]/[2]). The sources for both the image and the virtual machine will be available. For those who do not know it: Dolphin is a Smalltalk system for Windows provided by Andy Bower and Blaire McGlashan from www.object-arts.com The article from BitwiseMag [3] gives an overview. The existing Dolphin 6.2 codebase was brought by Andy Bower now under Git and compiles completely under VisualStudio Community 2013. This is a new version, Dolphin 7, that is modelled off the previous X6.1 Professional Edition (although you can choose to build Dolphin Community Edition from it if you like). Have fun T. VM error in Arch Linux
by nacho Dec. 29, 2015

Dec. 29, 2015

Hi Folks, I've installed pharo-vm and pharo-launcher from AUR as stated in the pharo site. Everything works fine for Pharo 4. But when I try to load a Pharo 5 image I get the following error: This interpreter (vers. 6502) cannot read file image (vers. 6521) and when I do pharo --version: 3.9-7 #1 Thu Dec 17 00:38:38 CET 2015 gcc 4.6.3 [Production ITHB VM] NBCoInterpreter NativeBoost-CogPlugin-EstebanLorenzano.21 uuid: 4d9b9bdf-2dfa-4c0b-99eb-5b110dadc697 Dec 17 2015 NBCogit NativeBoost-CogPlugin-EstebanLorenzano.21 uuid: 4d9b9bdf-2dfa-4c0b-99eb-5b110dadc697 Dec 17 2015 https://github.com/pharo-project/pharo-vm.git Commit: bad6fa2684afcf1d7cdb485f11049a4a4290fbc8 Date: 2015-12-14 12:47:06 +0100 By: Esteban Lorenzano <estebanlm(a)gmail.com> Jenkins build #15024 Linux pharo-linux 3.2.0-31-generic-pae #50-Ubuntu SMP Fri Sep 7 16:39:45 UTC 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux plugin path: /usr/share/pharo-vm/ [default: /usr/share/pharo-vm/] Any clues? How to use ExternalAddress in callouts with new FFI?
by Mariano Martinez Peck Dec. 29, 2015

Dec. 29, 2015

Hi Esteban, Previously, I was doing with NB something like this: *pointer := NativeBoost allocate: 4.* *self primitiveWhatever: pointer* and: *primitiveWhatever: pointer* * <primitive: #primitiveNativeCall module: #NativeBoostPlugin error: errorCode >* * ^ self nbCall: #( int void (NBExternalAddress pointer ) )* But of course that doesn't work with latest FFI. So I tried instead: *pointer := ExternalAddress allocate: 4.* *primitiveWhatever: pointer* * <primitive: #primitiveNativeCall module: #NativeBoostPlugin error: errorCode >* * ^ self nbCall: #( int void (ExternalAddress pointer ) )* But then I get a ExternalAddress class #asExternalTypeOn: which is sent in FFICallout >> resolveType: Any idea how can I use ExternalAddress in the signature of the FFI primitive call? What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance, -- Mariano http://marianopeck.wordpress.com

Back to Europe
by stepharo Dec. 28, 2015

Dec. 28, 2015

Hi guys We are back to Europe. - I gave 4 days lecture in cameroon and we got a lot of fun even if the room was fully packed. From 8 to 16h30 with Carambars - Then in Togo I gave one afternoon lecture to University catholic of Lome. - Then Esteban arrived and we gave 4 days lecture from 8 to 17h in Universtity of Lome. In the future we hope to get another lecture in Lome - probably two. People from Center Togo (Paillard and Sabirou) jumped on pharo and started to teach it just one week after I went there in September and they love it. I hope that they will write a paper for IWST. They hope their students will create software for companies within one or tewo years. People of the university of Togo may be interested to develop software with Pharo. The TinyBlog tutorial went really really well. Thanks Olivier Auverlot for the first version. I'm happy that I push it so much. https://ci.inria.fr/pharo-contribution/job/TinyBlogTutorial/6/artifact/book… I'm adding a REST chapter. Once the tutorial is finished we will translate it in english. I may go back to togo to give a lecture to teachers in May. We will see :) Since our flight was cancelled (yes we woke two time at 3h45 and 1h in the morning) I wrote the following tutorial based on the great lecture esteban did on Voyage. https://ci.inria.fr/pharo-contribution/view/Books/job/PharoBookWorkInProgre… Stef

NativeBoost class>>#isEnabled ?
by Alexandre Bergel Dec. 28, 2015

Dec. 28, 2015

Hi Esteban, The following expression "NativeBoost isEnabledâ raises an error in a Spur image. Would it be difficult to restore the original semantics of this method? Our 3d effort is currently stuck in a pre-spur image. Re: [Pharo-dev] [Pharo-users] Transcendental #new (was Re: why Pillar)
by Robert Withers Dec. 28, 2015

Here's the thing that gets my goat: I had already acknowledged it was enough for the list and was signing off further comment when Ben decided he really needed to add his two cents. It is unfortunate he did not spend his change in a positive manner but wished to be negative and critical. I was unwilling to let that go by as an implicit restriction on the substance of my posting, into the future. ...and the thread is twice as long. Not my doing. Some things must be challenged. Do you know what I mean, then? Just say no to intellectual coercion. robert On 12/27/2015 11:33 AM, Ben Coman wrote: > Hi Robert, > > I'm glad your found someone on the list to connect to on a spiritual level, > but could you please keep your public posts to technical matters, > (plus keep signatures short and trim old signatures from quoted > responses - which unfortunately threaded email clients like gmail > often hide) > > cheers -ben > > On Mon, Dec 28, 2015 at 2:15 AM, Robert Withers > <robert.w.withers(a)gmail.com> wrote: >> *My apologies...I'll try for #random. :)* >> >> nameste, >> robert >> >> >> -- >> There are five kinds of coloring (kleshas): >> 1) forgetting, or ignorance about the true nature of things (avidya), >> 2) I-ness, individuality, or egoism (asmita), >> 3) attachment or addiction to mental impressions or objects (raga), >> 4) aversion to thought patterns or objects (dvesha), and >> 5) love of these as being life itself, as well as fear of their loss as >> being death. >> (avidya asmita raga dvesha abhinivesha pancha klesha) >> >> >> On 12/27/2015 09:44 AM, Robert Withers wrote: >> >> I was thinking about this on my drive home, more, and I think that I was >> jumping the duck. #new is related to named classes, therefore in the analogy >> of brahma-loka, this is more of a rupa level behavior.
