Problem with delay waiting (OSSubprocess code) on Pharo 5.0
by Mariano Martinez Peck Aug. 8, 2016

Aug. 8, 2016

Hi guys, I am seeing a problem in Pharo 5.0 regarding Delay >> wait. I cannot explain how this could happened but it does, and it happened to me a couple of times (but not fully reproducible). In OSSubprocess I have this child watcher: initializeChildWatcher "This is a process which waits for the death of a child processes. Use SIGCHLD events rather than a Delay to poll." | processSynchronizationDelay | *processSynchronizationDelay := Delay forMilliseconds: 20.* childWatcher ifNil: [ childWatcher := [[ "OSProcess authors suspected that there were various ways in which OS signals could be missed under conditions of heavy load. For that reason, we use #waitTimeoutMSecs: with the semaphore, so that if a signal is missed, we time out and rescan occasionally anyway (#updateActiveChildrenAndNotifyDead sends queryExitStatus which sends waitpid() ) " self sigChldSemaphore waitTimeoutMSecs: 1000. *processSynchronizationDelay wait. "Avoids lost signals in heavy process switching"* self updateActiveChildrenAndNotifyDead. ] repeat] newProcess. childWatcher resume. "name selected to look reasonable in the process browser" childWatcher name: ((ReadStream on: childWatcher hash asString) next: 5) , ': the OSSubprocess child watcher' ] The problem is that now above process is hung on the "*processSynchronizationDelay wait.". *At least that's what I can see from the process browser. That should not hung, of course, and should stop waiting after 20 ms. If I inspect the Delay instance in question (doing the wait) I see that the print string is bad.... "a Delay(20 msecs; 3641032396485 msecs remaining)". WTF? 20ms and you remain 3641032396485 to wait??? I attach an screenshot of the Delay instance in case there could be something wrong. Maybe it is wrong to keep and re-use same instance of Delay? (note it is outside the closure) (this was not a problem in the past). Thanks in advance for any clue. -- Mariano http://marianopeck.wordpress.com

using glorp and active record
by Sean Glazier Aug. 8, 2016

Aug. 8, 2016

Hi, I have been trying to get glorp using active record working in pharo 5. I have a descriptor class for it and the classes inherit from active Record. I describe the table as: tableForAnswer: aTable | vistorId questionId | (aTable createFieldNamed: 'id' type: platform serial) bePrimaryKey. questionId := aTable createFieldNamed: 'questionId' type: platform integer. vistorId := aTable createFieldNamed: 'vistorId' type: platform integer. aTable createFieldNamed: 'answer' type: platform text. aTable addForeignKeyFrom: vistorId to: ((self tableNamed: 'VISITORS') fieldNamed: 'ID') suffixExpression: 'MATCH SIMPLE ON UPDATE NO ACTION ON DELETE CASCADE'. aTable addForeignKeyFrom: questionId to: ((self tableNamed: 'QUESTIONS') fieldNamed: 'ID') suffixExpression: 'MATCH SIMPLE ON UPDATE NO ACTION ON DELETE CASCADE' the table in the DB was preexisting. when I do Answer findAll I get and error that it is expecting a number for the id field. in the PostgresSQLPlaform serial is defined thusly. serial "For postgresql, we use sequences, and explicitly get the values ourselves, so just tell the database that they're integers." ^self typeNamed: #serial ifAbsentPut: [GlorpSerialType new typeString: 'integer']. What the DB hands back is 'nextval('answers_id_seq'::regclass)' which seems correct if it is telling me that there exists a sequence for this field and that is the correct command to issue for the field. am I defining this table incorrectly? or should I bag using active Record. I kind of liked it when working in Visualworks because there were also tools that would read in and describe the tables and then tools to assit when you needed to migrate to another version and do the changes etc. FYI this is the query that is being run that fails. SELECT t1.table_name, t1.table_schema, t1.column_name, t1.is_nullable, t1.data_type, t1.column_default, t1.character_maximum_length, EXISTS (SELECT DISTINCT 'x' FROM ((INFORMATION_SCHEMA.table_constraints s1t1 INNER JOIN INFORMATION_SCHEMA.key_column_usage s1t3 ON ((s1t1.table_name = s1t3.table_name) AND ((s1t1.table_schema = s1t3.table_schema) AND (s1t1.constraint_name = s1t3.constraint_name)))) INNER JOIN INFORMATION_SCHEMA.columns s1t2 ON (((s1t3.column_name = s1t2.column_name) AND (s1t3.table_schema = s1t2.table_schema)) AND (s1t3.table_name = s1t2.table_name))) WHERE ((s1t1.constraint_type = 'PRIMARY KEY') AND ((s1t2.column_name = t1.column_name) AND (((s1t2.table_schema = t1.table_schema) AND (s1t2.table_name = t1.table_name)) AND ((s1t2.table_schema = t1.table_schema) AND (s1t2.table_name = t1.table_name)))))) FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.columns t1 WHERE ((t1.table_name = 'answers') AND (t1.table_schema = 'public')) it looks as though it is reading in the schema and is expecting and integer because we told it to in the serial method on the PostgesSQLPlatform. As much as I love diving into these frameworks to figure out the deep inner workings, I really need to be getting data in and out without a fuss. Should I follow the DBX example where the descriptor is orthogonal to the model and one does not subclass from active record? I also note that not all the glorp tests pass. I think the were rather minor fails like timezone issues or something. It took a while but the test created a number of tables in the DB. So again Have I done something Obtuse that I qught to be slapped for here? thanks

when Cmd-P can just display a string in the debugger
by stepharo Aug. 8, 2016

Aug. 8, 2016

Hi Seriously I do not get why printing in the debugger cannot just print the text without putting these ^%&*^*&()**(&%^*( double quote around. Why do we change such basic functionality and in particular we do not propose ANY alternative. If you need a pop up and do not care of manipulating text this is ok but WHY the default behavior has to be changed. I hate so much that the GTTool ALWAYS want to IMPOSE a flow. Your &^%*^(& flow is not mine. Should I go and hack to get back the default behavior. WHY do I have to do that? Seriously. Especially since the solution was super simple: introduce a new binding living nicely close to PrintIt but no "we have to change the default one with something that may fuck your flow but who cares because my flow is better." Why do we get systematically this message? Why such changes are damaging TDD practices without any notices? May be I should use another Smalltalk at the end. Stef

I'm annoyed because...
by Dale Henrichs Aug. 8, 2016

Aug. 8, 2016

when I make certain syntax errors while editting a method the syntax highlighting goes all white on me ... I seem to recall that in the past the syntax highlighter would start showing red at the point of the syntax error ... and in this case the whole method is white and I have to guess where my error was --- attached a png --- I used to be able to depend upon the syntax highlighter to not only catch the syntax error (turning white indicates that the highlighter knows I made a booboo) but show me the point at which things stopped making sense ... ummatched brackets is pretty common and I would recognize that the brackets were mis-matched in the past ... now the whole thing goes white and I have to work much harder ... Looking for preferences to move the debugger buttons
by stepharo Aug. 8, 2016

Aug. 8, 2016

Hi I'm FEDUP to have to go up to click on buttons in the debugger. I know that some of you have a preferences to fix this problem (yes doru nicely explain that we do not understand anything and this is part of design but I do not care of design I care about my efficiency - as if Apple wuld not break their design rules in any version of iTunes). And I would like to use such preferences. Stef

I just got this problem again and I did noticed this time that I got an "error during termination" that I "Abandoned" before realizing that I should have recorded the stack ... strange errors in jenkins jobs
by Tudor Girba Aug. 7, 2016

Aug. 7, 2016

Hi, Since yesterday, all Moose-related jobs are failing. These are built on top of Pharo 5.0 stable, downloaded like this: wget --quiet -O - http://get.pharo.org/50+vm | bash We did not change anything in the projects that fail, and locally on Mac, I can load any of the code without problems. The jobs are running Linux. So, I am wondering if anything else has changed in Pharo 5.0. In particular, the error is quite strange. It looks like this: [31mError: MessageNotUnderstood: receiver of "finish" is nil [0mUndefinedObject(Object)>>error: [ :err :rcvr | | errCtx errMorph | errCtx := thisContext. [ errCtx := errCtx sender. "Search the sender chain to find the morph causing the problem" [ errCtx notNil and: [ errCtx receiver isMorph not ] ] whileTrue: [ errCtx := errCtx sender ]. "If we're at the root of the context chain then we have a fatal drawing problem" errCtx ifNil: [ ^ self handleFatalDrawingError: err ]. errMorph := errCtx receiver. ... See more at: https://ci.inria.fr/moose/job/fame/1266/console Any idea of what might be wrong? Cheers, Doru -- www.tudorgirba.com www.feenk.com "We cannot reach the flow of things unless we let go."
