[ANN] TaskIt v0.2
by Guille Polito Aug. 26, 2016

Aug. 26, 2016

Hi all, With Santi we wanted to share a new release of TaskIt, a concurrency management library for Pharo. TaskIt development is done entirely in github, using iceberg. Works like a charm. Please find below attached the changes log with more information. Cheers, Guille & Santi TaskIt https://github.com/sbragagnolo/taskit TaskIt is a library that ease Process usage in Pharo. It provides abstractions to execute and synchronize concurrent tasks, and several pre-built mechanisms that are useful for many application developers. This chapter explores starts by familiarizing the reader with TaskIt's abstractions, guided by examples and code snippets. At the end, we discuss TaskIt extension points and possible customizations. ChangesLog TaskIt v0.2 Major Features * Task Runners o NewProcessTaskRunner o LocalProcessTaskRunner o Worker o WorkerPool * Futures with callbacks * Future combinators * Future synchronous access * Services Infrastructure * Travis CIhttps://travis-ci.org/sbragagnolo/taskit * Documentationhttps://github.com/sbragagnolo/taskit/blob/master/README.md Minor changes log (from commits) * Enhanced class comments * TKTWorker processes are terminated in case the worker is collected. See Issues#8 <https://github.com/sbragagnolo/taskit/issues/8>and#5 <https://github.com/sbragagnolo/taskit/issues/5> * Process Dashboard. - Adds TKTTaskItProcessProvider by default with the extension package - Hides job and task fields since there are not reachable any more.

by stepharo Aug. 26, 2016

Aug. 26, 2016

Hi yesterday I started to port omnibase to pharo and it uses the old API apicall: so it breaks when loading. I got some windows showing errors and after the image was full of new UIProcess. Can someone try to reproduce it and I think that we should fix it? Stef

problem with Epicea and #name
by Andrei Chis Aug. 26, 2016

Aug. 26, 2016

Hi, When trying to load a new version of the GTInspector in the latest Pharo image I get an infinite recursion. It seems that the problem is appears because a class is removed, which at a certain point calls #asEpiceaRingDefinition. This does then 'self superclass name', however, the superclass is nil and UndefinedObject>>#name is called, which is deprecated. This should open a warning window and but it leads to an infinite recursion. Know problem or should I opened an issues? Cheers, Andrei

[ann] Lam Research evaluates Pharo
by Tudor Girba Aug. 25, 2016

Aug. 25, 2016

Hi, We are very happy to make the following announcement: Lam Research, a leading supplier of wafer fabrication equipment and services to the global semiconductor industry, is an experienced user of the Smalltalk programming language. Smalltalk is a key component in Lam's software control system for a broad range of the equipment it manufactures. Tudor Girba is a leading member of the tools and environment development effort in Pharo, having architected the Glamorous Toolkit for live programming. Eliot Miranda is author of the Cog virtual machine that underlies Pharo and other Smalltalk dialects. Lam has engaged Tudor and Eliot to explore potential enhancements in Lam's use of Smalltalk. These enhancements range from running highly optimized Smalltalk on low cost, single board computers, to enhancing Lam's Smalltalk development practices with state-of-the-art live programming. During the engagement, Tudor and Eliot successfully moved a key communication component of the control system to Pharo. It was a challenging task aimed at extending the reach of Lamâs system to the Pharo world including the option of executing on ARM processors. Cheers, Tudor Girba, Eliot Miranda and Chris Thorgrimsson

[ann] seaside gtdebugger
by Tudor Girba Aug. 25, 2016

Aug. 25, 2016

Hi, As presented at ESUG on Monday, we now have a custom GTDebugger for Seaside. This was built by Andrei as an initial experiment. As we do not know much about Seaside-specific debugging problems, we asked a couple of Seaside users to describe issues that would be useful to be addressed in the debugger, and Andrei allocated some 4h to construct some of these in an custom debugger for Seaside. Two of the issues that popped up are: - get a quick view of the current request context - get an overview of the current component nesting They are now addressed like depicted in the screenshot below. You should look at this debugger as a beginning. Beside the current basic extensions one added value is that we now have the scaffolding to build more. Please take a look at it and letâs try to identify more concrete issues that might be addressed. It would be great if this would be taken over by the Seaside community. The debugger can be loaded on top of a Pharo 6.0 with Seaside inside like this: Gofer new smalltalkhubUser: 'Moose' project: 'GToolkit'; package: 'GT-SeasideDebugger'; load. #GTSeasideDebugger asClass register Cheers, Doru -- www.tudorgirba.com www.feenk.com "The coherence of a trip is given by the clearness of the goal."

by Nicolai Hess Aug. 25, 2016

Aug. 25, 2016

Hi, I recently added some class comments to the Refactoring-Package. (RBBrowserEnvironments, RBRefactoring, RBNamespace). Now I added some more HelpTopics describing the refactoring framework, some background information, RBPatternParser and Metavariables, some examples and put the existing class comments into the HelpBook. see fogbugz issue 18829 <https://pharo.fogbugz.com/f/cases/18829/Add-a-RefactoringFramework-System-H…> Add a RefactoringFramework System HelpTopic you can load the slice and open the HelpBook with HelpBrowser openOn: RefactoringHelp. Would be nice if someone can help with proofreading and of course, amy feedback is welcome. nicolai

The OpenCL bindings/VirtualGPU has been updated to the uFFI
by Ronie Salgado Aug. 25, 2016

Aug. 25, 2016

Hi, I have just finished updating the OpenCL bindings and the VirtualGPU to use the UnifiedFFI in Pharo 5. All of the examples have been tested in Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11.6. Best regards, Ronie P.S: Do not confuse the VirtualGPU with the AbstractGPU. The AbstractGPU is an abstraction layer above Vulkan, Direct3D 12 and Metal. The AbstractGPU is used as the foundation for Woden 2.
