[Calypso] Toolbar and Statusbar Look - voting time
by Torsten Bergmann Sept. 19, 2017

Sept. 19, 2017

Hi all, as you know Denis Kudriashov does a fantastic job in implementing the new Calypso system browser. The plan is that at some point in time will be a replacement for Nautilus in the standard image. Even if not yet integrated one can already use it (either by loading from catalog or github [1]) For me the more I use it (and get used to it) the more I like Calypso and I guess others enjoy it too already. But unfortunately there is a single but very prominently visible UI thing that I dislike on the current look: For the "Pharo3Theme" (light theme) the current implementation of Calypso has a white toolbar in the middle and a white status bar at the bottom. Technically Dennis sets the colors of these morphs to transparent to have this effect (see LEFT example of the attached screenshot) To me this lookes strange and unusual because - usually (on Windows, GTK, Java Swing, Linux window managers) such areas like a status bar follow the window color and are displayed in gray when that is the default window theme color (see [2], [3], [4]) - these white bars would better fit for the "Glamorous Whitespace" theme (as this theme is already more white areas) Also the current white bars do not make a pleasant contrast to the other panes of Calypso: - there is not really a visual distinction to the package/class/protocol-tag/method panes and filters for the middle part (toolbar) - there is not really a visual distinction from the code pane for the bottom part (statusbar) - the divider line in the code pane just stops in a white area without borders To me this looks rather ugly and I would like Pharo to look more professional and clean ;) So I proposed a simple PR [5] today to change this and technically using the window color of the theme - the result can be seen on the right side of the attached screenshot and discussed with Denis on Discord. Denis on the other hand still likes the white approach on the left more while I prefer the right one. He wrote that he wants other people comment on this issue first to which I agree and therefore I write this mail to discuss it here on the dev-list and find out about what the majority in the community prefers. So it would be good if others could - comment about their personal preference - or just vote with "LEFT" (white/transparent) or "RIGHT" (window color) in reply to this mail - or make another proposal (which is only accepted with screenshot and PR ;) Also please do not mix other UI discussions into this thread. Thanks in advance! Bye T. Doubts on Garage (1st use)
by Casimiro de Almeida Barreto Sept. 18, 2017

Sept. 18, 2017

Good evening, I was trying to sanitize statements, but something went awkward. The following non sanitized codelet works ok: Â Â Â str := 'INSERT INTO chaves_de_encriptacao ( Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â numero_funcional, Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â chave_privada, Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â chave_publica) VALUES (''', Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â self personId leaId asString,''', ''', Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â self keyPair privateKey asAsn1DerBytes asByteArray hex,''', ''', Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â self keyPair publicKey asAsn1DerBytes asByteArray hex,''')'. Â Â Â [ dbConnection execute: str ] on: Exception do: [ ^ false ]. But sanitized one: Â Â Â str := dbConnection createStatement: 'INSERT INTO chaves_de_encriptacao ( numero_funcional, chave_privada, chave_publica) VALUES (''?'', ''?'', ''?'')'. Â Â Â str prepare. Â Â Â str at: 1 bind: self personId leaId asString. Â Â Â str at: 2 bind: self keyPair privateKey asAsn1DerBytes asByteArray hex. Â Â Â str at: 3 bind: self keyPair publicKey asAsn1DerBytes asByteArray hex. Â Â Â str execute. returns exception mysqld_stmt_send_long_data (obviously same thing happens with the shorthand str := dbConnection prepare: ... And I inspect most things but could not understand what's going bad. As SQL is not my field, I wonder if someone could help to elucidate what's going on. Best regards, Casimiro Barreto

Esteban's ChangeLog week of 11 September 2017
by estebanlm＠gmail.com Sept. 18, 2017

Sept. 18, 2017

Hello! This is my weekly ChangeLog, from 11 September 2017 to 17 September 2017. You can see it in a better format by going here: http://log.smallworks.eu/web/search?from=11/9/2017&to=17/9/2017 ChangeLog ========= 14 September 2017: ------------------ * Since Ronie came to spend two weeks with us, I made a "stop the world" call to work with him in a couple of projects I want to integrate in Pharo. So, I've been working on that last two days: Ronie has a working implementation of a "real headless" VM that can chose to start a world using SDL2. Why we want this? Because of many reasons... one of them is because is lame to open a hidden window when we want to use just a command line, but also because the desition of opening a window (the World or whatever) should be responsibility of the image (the user), not the VM. Anyway, the problem is that Ronie made his VM using CMake and we use plain Makefiles (a very complex structure of makefiles), so we needed to convert that. Also, since this is experimental, a lot ot small details are missing and we are running to supply them. But well... I'm happy to say that we have a Pharo 7.0 running 100% on headless mode with an SDL2 window serving the world, on macOS 32bits. Tomorrow we will look to fix some remaining details and to expand the source to linux and windows (32bits), then we will jump to 64bits. 11 September 2017: ------------------ * I just released [iceberg v0.5.8](https://github.com/pharo-vcs/iceberg/releases/tag/v0.5.8). This version is a maintenance version, and contains this fixes: * speed up of commits by not traversing the full tree to detect staged files (just compare later) * fix refresh option in PR tool * do not use hardcoded colours in diffs * add guessing of source dirs to easy adding of local repositories * recategorise methods It will be integrated on Pharo 7.0 in on [case: 20406](https://pharo.fogbugz.com/f/cases/20406). * Last week I was at ESUG :) Anyway, I'm working on [tonel](http://github.com/pharo-vcs/tonel), the new fileformat made to replace [filetree](http://github.com/pharo-vcs/filetree) (because of many reasons, being the non-scalable nature of file-per-method strategy the most important). cheers! Esteban
