[Pharo-project] about morphic analysis done at ESUG
by Stéphane Ducasse Sept. 5, 2008

Sept. 5, 2008

Marcus do you have a smalll notes we took when we perform the morphic analysis so that we can turn into instance variables some of the ugly valuesAt: Then do you think that we should turn the Dictionary in extension into "RBFastDictionary"? If yes can you point me to that class? and better open an issue? Stef

[Pharo-project] Arguments to simply remove ComponentLikeModel
by Stéphane Ducasse Sept. 4, 2008

Sept. 4, 2008

ComponentLikeModel seems quite out of sync Left over from the fabrik experiment. After a good code reading I think that we can remove this class. duplicate:from: -> no sender addPinFromSpec: PinMorph was removed previously so let us remove it. :) choosePartName is duplicated choosePartName is only invoked by some menus It seems that the internalName of the debugMenu of the debug halo is somehow change the instance variable name of the selected object. There is no implementors of copySlotMethodsFrom: so : delete init* methods are about pin nameMeIn: is only invoked from init* method I imagine that you are convinced that removing this class is good. [Pharo-project] Question about Pharo and Multimedia
by Germán Arduino Sept. 4, 2008

Sept. 4, 2008

Hi Guys: Sorry if I'm asking something obvious or already asked, but, until now, I used only Squeak. Some time ago I asked in Squeak list about "Movies" categories I need to develop a multimedia app, without responses, neither on ReleaseTeam list. Some (bad) responses on IRC, commenting that, as they not found "maintainers", they are leaving behind such things. Pharo will include multimedia stuffs or is oriented only to web apps? Thanks in advance by the comments. Cheers. -- Germán S. Arduino http://www.arsol.biz http://www.arsol.net

[Pharo-project] About initials and name
by Stéphane Ducasse Sept. 2, 2008

Sept. 2, 2008

Hi all I wanted to fix Author and initial business. I have the following questions and wishes. Please let me know what you think. - I would like to remove fullName since I do not understand why it is needed. - I would like to invoke name instead of initials. - I would like also to use firstnameLastName (and avoid to use . inside the name since it may conflict with other file characters). Do you have any idea of another solution? - talking with igor we thought that we could have stephaneDucasseMIT in the timestamp to indicate the license of the method. I would like to avoid to break MC or other tools by accident. stef Browsing the code I found a fun preference :) wantsChangeSetLogging "Answer whether method changes in the receiver should be logged to current change set. This circumlocution avoids such logging for programmatically-compiled methods in Preferences, removing an annoyance" ^ Author initialsPerSe ~= 'programmatic'

Re: [Pharo-project] About a better look
by Bill Schwab Sept. 1, 2008

Stef, Adrian, Where reasonable to do so, I encourage thinking in terms of Pinesoft's work, perhaps a new theme. If we can do better, that's ok too. While the thought appears to be catching on, it is worth saying again: Squeak's GUI woes are more often of feel than of look. Bill Wilhelm K. Re: [Pharo-project] Discussion summary and milestones
by Bill Schwab Sept. 1, 2008

Sept. 1, 2008

Serge, I agree more than I disagree. However, I will take my usual stance that it is the FEEL of Squeak that is suffering. Fortunately, Gary has helped there too! IMHO, the _real_ benefit of Morphic is as an emulated widget framework. Don't say this to a static language guru<g>, but native widgets do not scale well; eventually large grids, etc. need a way to escape the overhead of washing everything trough the OS. Absolutely, we should not kill Morphic w/o having a replacement emulated framework. Failing a replacement, we should keep it. Bill Wilhelm K. Schwab, Ph.D. University of Florida Department of Anesthesiology PO Box 100254 Gainesville, FL 32610-0254 Email: bschwab(a)anest.ufl.edu Tel: (352) 273-6785 FAX: (352) 392-7029 >>> serge.stinckwich(a)doesnotunderstand.org 08/30/08 12:35 PM >>> 2008/8/30 Hilaire Fernandes <hilaire(a)ofset.org>: > 2008/8/30 Marcus Denker <denker(a)iam.unibe.ch>: > >>> For milestone 2 >>> ------------------- >>> - GTK binding >> >> Optional or replacing morphic? > > > Don't run too fast to kill Morphic. > There are a lot of value in Morphic and GTK+ is not a replacement for > it, more an alternative for different purpose. And with the work of Gary, Morphs are looking much better ;-) GTK is great have to better acceptance by non-smalltalkers but it's a bit premature to switch to GTK. -- Serge Stinckwich Smalltalkers do: [:it | All with: Class, (And love: it)] http://blog.doesnotunderstand.org/ _______________________________________________ Pharo-project mailing list Pharo-project(a)lists.gforge.inria.fr http://lists.gforge.inria.fr/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/pharo-project

Hello pharoers it would be nice if we could go over the items (especially the extensions proposed in Squeak3.11 Contributions/Kernel-Extensions) on squeaksource and see what can be integrated into pharo. stef
