Stef, I suspect your mood is appropriate. Most likely, it masks a failure to initialize something to a collection. Unless there is a performance argument (e.g. many are created, few are actually used, or something like that??), then it probably should go. Bill Wilhelm K. Stef, Would you not simply fix B2? I could easily be missing something; perhaps B2 is an external package that works in Squeak but clobbers Pharo?? Is it something else? FWIW, I envision a stable release and active development, much as happens on Squeak, just consistent with the Pharo frame of mind. New contributions would tend to go into the development release, some that are of near-term interest could be tested and "back-ported" (aka installed in the next stable release). Every so often, I would further envision doing some type of export of all my stable-version Pharo code and loading into the development release to look for problems or to verify that all is well. Making that export/import cycle as simple as possible will be a useful step in helping people test the development images. Understanding the existing tools is one of my next goals. For Dolphin, I wrote a tool called Migrate that helped to sniff out my packages and overrides and get them loaded in a new image. I would like to find that there is something so slick that Migrate is not needed for Pharo. Failing that, I will port it over, once I figure out what it should do. Bill Wilhelm K. [Pharo-project] About reusing tests via traits

Hi guys I did a fun coding session in the train to brest. I started to code collection tests as traits (as damien did for stream) and this is reallllly cool. I could write some tests and apply them to OrderedCollection, Set, Bag, Interval..... I will publish that and continue. I imagine that the coverage for Collection is increase a lot. Stef

Marcus, Agreed. If there has been other than constructive criticism/suggestions/wishes, I haven't seen it, and you ARE doing a great job!! Years of cruft are being removed and refined, and it will turn ugly at times. Once a Pharo 1.0 exits, there will be development and stable releases, and hence an explicit warning that the development image is just that. Bill Wilhelm K. The make files I ended up with are here: http://ftp.squeak.org/Exupery/vms/freetypeMakeFiles.tz They're not ideal but should work on all Unix platforms with gmake. Given they're only for building on Unix that's probably good enough for now. And they're heavily commented because they're not ideal. I've also incorporated the rest of the image building necessary for FreeType into the exupery-dev Universes project. I've created a FreeType Plus-Core package and a Refactoring Tests package. The FreeType Plus-Core package is to avoid loading the prebuilt freetype plugins as that breaks if the FT2Plugin directory exists beside the VM. The Refactoring Tests is loaded because three of Exupery's tests build on refactoring tests. Feel free to take over these packages. Bryce

[Pharo-project] Performance observation

Hello all, As part of some catch-up work from a couple of weeks ago, I'm using my 1.8 GHz/500MB Ubuntu box and a remote desktop client to do some configuration on a win2k3 VM running on a blade server on campus. By many standards, I am using a pig-slow machine jumping through lots of hoops to reach a machine that has only part of a CPU at the other end. One striking thing is that the remote desktop client on Ubuntu is putting its Windows XP counter part to shame for speed for most things; the XP client drags on everything; this is generally (almost) snappy, and much nicer to use as result. The XP box in my office, IIRC, is a 3.x GHz machine (faster than what I am using now to be sure); it too might have "only" 500MB of RAM - I can check that later if it matters. The client is clearly optimizing window moves and at least some scrolling operations, uncoverings, etc. Pharo running over there looks comparatively slow, no doubt because ever windowing operation is seen as a change to the on main window. I do not know what to make of it, other than it might be a argument in favor of one native window per system window. Just thought I'd mention it. Bill Wilhelm K.
