Not to add any pressure or be annoying, but what is the current estimate of when 1.0 will be released? I am just curious. -------------- Original message -------------- From: Stéphane Ducasse <stephane.ducasse(a)inria.fr> > Use pharo (better UI). > Once we will have pharo 1.0 we will work on pharo by example. > Seaside is now developed using pharo. > > Stef > > > On Jan 29, 2009, at 5:53 PM, Marco D'Ambros wrote: > > > Hi all! > > > > I will start teaching a course about software engineering and web > > development, and I decided to do it with seaside. > > I was wondering whether to use pharo or squeak... which are the > > benefits and drawbacks of pharo with respect to squeak, in the context > > of a bachelor course? > > The students know about object oriented programming but don't about > > smalltalk, so in the first weeks we will teach smalltalk. > > > > Any suggestions? > > > > Thanks and cheers > > Marco D'Ambros > > > > _______________________________________________ > > Pharo-project mailing list > > Pharo-project(a)lists.gforge.inria.fr > > http://lists.gforge.inria.fr/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/pharo-project > > > > > _______________________________________________ > Pharo-project mailing list > Pharo-project(a)lists.gforge.inria.fr > http://lists.gforge.inria.fr/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/pharo-project

I have the same problem when compiling the vm on OpenSolaris 2008-11 using the SUN compilers. So please do some more testing with the 4.3.2. version, after all we cannot stick to old compilers, can we? Regards, Paul Provoost. Re: [Pharo-project] [ENH] Literal Byte Arrays

Lukas, I had pretty much resigned to going without this - not sure why given how much I grip about other stuff :) There are indeed efficiency considerations, but it's also a big step in compatibility. THANKS!!! Bill Wilhelm K. Schwab, Ph.D. University of Florida Department of Anesthesiology PO Box 100254 Gainesville, FL 32610-0254 Email: bschwab(a)anest.ufl.edu Tel: (352) 273-6785 FAX: (352) 392-7029 >>> renggli(a)gmail.com 01/30/09 4:55 AM >>> > so do I understand correctly that your point is to replace > asByteArray by #[] Yes, instead of writing #( 1 2 3 ) asByteArray you write #[ 1 2 3 ] Which is much faster and saves memory, as no conversion and no copying happens at runtime. All Smalltalk dialects (with the exception of GemStone) support this syntax. Pharo should have it too. Here is the result of: fprintf(stderr, "oldLimit=%p\ndelta=%d\nnewSize=%d\nnewDelta=%d\n"); oldLimit=0x80562b8 delta=-1077506096 newSize=0 newDelta=423027548 squeak: /tmp/squeak-svn/platforms/unix/vm/sqUnixMemory.c:175: uxGrowMemoryBy: Assertion `newDelta >= 0' failed. Hi all, are there any other tests available for the Multilingual stuff other than "MultilingualTests-TextConversion"? Would like to avoid re-inventing the wheel... Michael

[Pharo-project] Character and binary streams
by Michael Rueger Jan. 30, 2009

Jan. 30, 2009

Hi all, while working on the unicode cleanup I ran into the current implementation of Character>>storeBinaryOn: aStream "Store the receiver on a binary (file) stream" value < 256 ifTrue:[aStream basicNextPut: self] ifFalse:[Stream nextInt32Put: value]. Me thinks this is pretty useless, as there is no way to read the binary stream again unless you would know at which indices you stored one or four byte characters. The only place where this method is called from text converters writing to binary streams and can only happen, when the converter encounters a unicode character that has now corresponding mapping to the byte based extern character encoding (e.g. Latin1). So the question is what to do in that case? How do other systems deal with this problem? Michael

[Pharo-project] newDelta >0 failed in sqUnixMemory
by Damien Cassou Jan. 30, 2009

Jan. 30, 2009

Hi, with a recent stock pharo image and a new VM compiled from svn on Linux, I always get squeak: /tmp/squeak-svn/platforms/unix/vm/sqUnixMemory.c:172: uxGrowMemoryBy: Assertion `newDelta >= 0' failed. Aborted This does not happen on Squeak 3.9 nor 3.10. This did not happen yesterday when I was on Ubuntu Hardy. Now, I'm on Intrepid, GCC 4.3.2 and it crashes after 3 seconds of work on any Pharo image. You may want to know that to compile the vm, I was obliged to change sqUnixFBDevMousePS2.c to make use of the 'write(2)' return value because my compiler didn't want to compile if write(2) return value was unused. -- Damien Cassou http://damiencassou.seasidehosting.st

[Pharo-project] Updated Polymorph
by Gary Chambers Jan. 29, 2009

Jan. 29, 2009

Got annoyed with the PreferenceBrowser not fully tying in with themes so have reworked it a bit. Interesting to see that less code is needed when utilising the theme helper methods. Done as overrides for Squeak compatability, of course. Really need to start thinking of the base being Pharo with patches for Squeak though. Polymorph-Widgets-gvc.33 on SqueakSource. Regards, Gary.
