Hi, I recently downloaded the latest Pharo Dev and Web images, and also the 2.8.4 one-click (which seems to be based on the Pharo image and VM too). And I found out that its performance is terrible, it takes forever (you perceive the delay) to open a browser, browse senders, change a method selection on the OB or even do a "print-it" on a workspace. However when accessing seaside through the web UI, it's blazing fast. Which makes me think there is something which is not working as it should. As a side note, I downloaded the latest Cuis image from http://www.jvuletich.org/Cuis/Index.html, and its amazingly fast. Â¿Am I missing something? Best regards, Esteban A. Maringolo

[Pharo-project] tests for FasterSets

Hi, I have saved some tests for A lot of subclasses of Dictionary and Set in 'PharoTaskForces'. Those tests only test basic behavior of a Set or a Dictionary. You will probably find errors and failures not due to fasterSets specificities : - uncommented classes - methods unclassified - class implementation bugs ( like smallDictionary . MethodDictionary ) - class specific behavior ( in this case, tests should maybe be rewriten).

Hello all, I managed to create an install script; as I suspected would be case, it was very anticlimactic. I tried creating a password-protected directory under my personal web site, but that did not go well. The authentication is weird, so it was probably asking a lot. A directory repository worked. Does Monticello/PackageInfo see a change in method category (aka package) as a change to the package? It appears not, and it worries me a little in that it seems to make it easy to lose work by forgetting to save it. Do any of you script saving your packages? The results are untested at present, but I used SIF to transfer a fair amount of code into Pharo. To cope with the naming of the ODBC classes, I ended up doing things like Smalltalk at:#DBConnection put:ODBCConnection, and that worked out nicely, at least AFAICT at this stage. SIF finally ended up complaining about running out of items when processing the last file. I reserve the right to later report that it was a miserable failure, but it looks like I most of the code imported. Using the standard tools, the w2k theme, disabling faded backgrounds and enabling fast drag, performance on an older Linux system is ok (more or less). There are still things that take too long, and Pharo's responses are no better (sometimes worse) than even software running over a remote desktop connection. We need a speed boost, but judicious settings help a little. Is there a way to disable the anti-aliased fonts? In fairness, I should try turning that off to see if any speed boost is worth the price. I did eval matthewf's comment but, unfortunately, the file name should have been .cs rather than .st. It's not exactly quick and simple. Did it fix the issue? Works for me. Hi guys I spent 3 hours looking for improvement in MC1.5. (of course I got problem when loading the code - but this can be fixed) When I could load it, it is indeed much faster. Finally And matthew nicely pointed me to his improvement. I will have a look at the specific speedup made by matthew and see if I can make that work. Now instead of extracting a speedup from that code (and looking like a thief) I would prefer that we do a task force and check MC1.6 improve it clean it if necessary. So does anybody with knowledge want to help on that topic? I'd rather you just used MC1.5 rather than port it, but ok There are two speedups in Monticello 1.6: Scanning the class heiarchy looking for package elements is 10x faster, due to a rewrite of the scanning code. Loading is 3-6x faster, especially for large packages, due to the atomic loader. I believe you can't make much use of the second, as the atomic loader doesn't support traits yet. The rewritten scanning code is in class PackageInfo, category single-pass. To merge it into Monticello, simply call PackageInfo >> classesDo:methodsDo:displayingProgress: from MCPackage >> snapshot. Attached is a changeset of the relevant code, extracted from mc1.6.
