[Pharo-project] Where declared global reside... how can they be removed?

Hi everyone, I'm new to both Smalltalk and especially to Pharo (and this mailing list). I have a very basic question and would like to be directed to more info or a different mailing list if appropriate. For most tutorials (I'm using squeak tutorials), one does a lot of work in a workspace. If I make a new global variable such as: MySquare := Morph new ...once I define "MySquare" as a global variable I know I can send it many messages like: MySquare openInWorld MySquare color: Color yellow When I'm done and I close the workspace, save the image and save the image. When I open it again it will know what "MySquare" is known in any workspace. How do I remove "MySquare" and/or the associated object? How could I see or find other such global variables? - John

Thanks everyone for the help with clearing the Smalltalk Dictionary variables (and best practices to avoid setting them). Since about Squeak 2.x I'd discovered smalltalk and have been learning as I go. One of the most confusing aspects is that there is very old documentation that still holds up well (the book "Inside Smalltalk") mixed with documentation that is only a few years old yet outdated. One area where this has given me the hardest time is trying to learn how to create interfaces and graphics for my programs. I know morphic has gone through and is going through many changes, but what is its future with Pharo and what would be the "best practices" for making images and UI for programs I am writing? - John

I was just doing some coding in my favorite dev environment today and I must say: Pharo is excellent!! Seriously, nice work by all of you. You have all been cranking forward; progress has been frequent, which makes it both exciting and comforting. I also realized today that the performance was weighing on me and making me not want to use Pharo recently; now it feels meaningfully better for coding. There are many issues to be dealt with yet(*), however, there are many that have been dealt with. Numerous things, like the NetNameResolver (and associated issues), have been working for me on a Mac out-of-the-box, even though there are issues on other platforms -- i started to pick through the code today to get up to speed, but... just cannot invest any serious time right now. I hope to be a contributor later this year. (*) no details available here... this thread is simply a song of praise. Nice work. Thank You all for your effort and contributions! -Cam

Hello all, I saw Damien's responses to my report of #localHostName troubles, and began a little fact checking for a follow up. That lead me to some browsing, in particular to senders of #primHostNameSize. I am running on Linux on an old machine and with an image having many of the same changes as in the recent "fast" image, but it's still not as snappy as one would want. That said, #testIPv6Echo is a long method, and when I select it in the senders list, I can see the code render in plain text and then a second time syntax highlighted. It makes me suspect that every method is rendered twice, and there might be a speed boost if we could go directly to the plain or colored source in one shot. I do not notice the double-draw with shorter methods. Note that the double-draw could be unique to Linux, possibly contributing to its sluggishness??? Bill

Hi all Cyrille cleaned SmallDictionary and check tests (169 now) Now he wanted to remove SmallDictionary before loading his new version and when we do that the image simply freezes.... And there is no references beside a tests there are no instances. So either the reference finder is broken or I do not get it. Does anybody has an idea what could be problem? [Pharo-project] need tests for DataStream

Hi, I wrote a new version of DataStream ( and its subclasses : ReferenceStream and SmartRefStream) in Nile and I would like to write tests for those classes. I would be very interested by anyone that has already write some tests for that.
