[Pharo-project] New profiler for Pharo: tester wanted!
by Alexandre Bergel March 25, 2010

March 25, 2010

Dear List, Over the last few months I put some effort on a new profiler for Pharo. It has been used on a number of projects. Time has come to share it with you. To install it, just doit the following expression in a workspace (Mondrian will also be installed): -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Gofer new squeaksource: 'MetacelloRepository'; package: 'ConfigurationOfSpy'; load. (Smalltalk at: #ConfigurationOfSpy) perform: #loadDefault -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= To invoke the profiler, use the following template: ProfilingPackageSpy viewProfiling: [ "YOUR CODE" ] inPackage: 'YourPackageName' ProfilingPackageSpy viewProfiling: [ "YOUR CODE" ] inPackagesMatching: 'PackageName*' Replace "YOUR CODE" by an expression. Some examples are provided in the class ProfilingPackageSpy (method category 'example'). You can find profilings of Mondrian, Glamour, Moose/CAnalyzer, O2. The profiling of Mondrian looks like this: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ProfilingPackageSpy viewProfiling: [ | view | view := MOViewRenderer new. view nodes: (1 to: 100) forEach: [:each | view nodes: (1 to: 100)]. view root applyLayout ] inPackage: 'Mondrian' -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= There are two things you should keep in mind: - "YOUR CODE" will be executed twice. The first time with message Tally, then the second time with the full instrumentation. The second execution should not be impacted by the first execution. - You cannot instrument the whole image. I need more time to make this happens. Therefore, you cannot provide '*' to inPackagesMatching: How to read the picture: - big rectangle are classes - edges represent class inheritance - inner rectangles are methods: * height = total time that the method has been executed * width = number of time the method has been executed * color = number of different receiver: white = the method has been executed on 1 receiver. black = many receivers You can do a right-click on a method, and select viewInvocation. This opens a second view that show the execution flow. A different mapping of metrics is used: - rectangle = methods - edges = invocation (upper invokes below) - gray color = method that always return 'self'. It corresponds to void methods in Java or C++. It is therefore likely that the method performs a side effect - yellow color = method that always returns the same value for a particular object - width and height are as in the first visualization Keep in mind that you mind encounter a freeze of your image if you instrument sensitive methods. I would be sincerely delighted to have experience report on this. I forgot about this email. I answer to the mail as it has an excellent question and my bad :) I put the O2 issues because: - I think it is a "official package that works on Pharo" even if we don't know what a official package is. - I have to create a version of the metacello configuration for O2 and I wanted to put the issues in the "description" of the release - The O2 issues were submitted in Pharo issue tracking, thus, I wanted to put them as closed and put "integrated in PharoXXX" - I changed the welcome workspace to load this new version of O2 However, it doesn't mean that O2 is now included in Dev images. Now you made me realize that this can be confusing. So, what should I do ? I am all ears :) > Cheers, > Adrian > > On Mar 20, 2010, at 20:40 , Mariano Martinez Peck wrote: > > > Hi folks. Hi Igor, at least for me because i didn't have to play with primitives and plugins. Even though i can, because i created a couple of them. But i really liked that you can easily code everything in smallttalk, using the Alien abstractions, and reify the library and the methods in the image. [Pharo-project] running pharo image with scripts on mac
by Tudor Girba March 25, 2010

Hi, I am trying to run some scripts on a startup of an image. I am on a Mac and I am using a call like: /Applications/Squeak4.2.2beta1U/Squeak\ 4.2.2beta1U.app/Contents/MacOS/ Squeak\ VM\ Opt x.image test.st - x.image is the image - test.st is a script that I would like to run in the image However, I get an error due to the input stream being nil, see the below debugger stack. [Pharo-project] Auto-rename image and changes file after updating
by Hernán Morales Durand March 25, 2010

March 25, 2010

Hi, I've noticed every time I update a Pharo image I should rename manually the image and changes file names to match the new updated version number. I.e.: If you have PharoCore-1.1-11291-UNSTABLE.changes PharoCore-1.1-11291-UNSTABLE.image then update to #11295 and save and quit, you should modify the file names manually to PharoCore-1.1-11295-UNSTABLE.changes PharoCore-1.1-11295-UNSTABLE.image The attached files does the following: -After a Pharo software update, evaluate the FileOutNewNamesAfterUpdate.st script -Quit the image -For Win users: Run the batch updateFileNames.bat to rename the image and changes files to the latest version. (this is not the same as Save as...) Feel free to modify and use it as you want :) Cheers, Hernán
