Hi All, >From what I understand of Smalltalk new language constructs can be added as long as they fit in with the "message passing" scheme/principle. Since the release of Smalltalk-80 I think some new constructs have been added and I need an example for a piece I am writing. Can someone tell me what syntactical construct was added since Blue Book - Smalltalk-80 ? I think "on:do:" was, but Im not sure. Rgs, James.

[Pharo-project] Mars, stuck on callbacks (again)... need opinions

Hi guys, I'm doing some "advance callbacks" for Mars, and I'm having several problems with table renderers (they are called A LOT of times and needs to be efficient). The ObjectiveCBridge is not as efficient as that calls needs to be executed, and well... I was planing to spend some time on this, trying to see how can I improve the callback velocity. And then a question came to my mind: do I spend time improving current ObjectiveCBridge implementation... or I better use Alien and migrate everything to it? some context: 1) it was always planned to "sonner or latter" migrate the ObjectiveCBridge stuff to alien (there is another . 2) Alien is not working -yet- for iPhone. It is planned (bah... it is "thought") to run Alien in iPhoneVM too. 3) Alien callback implementation is a lot cleaner than the current ObjectiveCBridge implementation (which relies on both sides semaphores, when alien callbacks relies on "image ownership") So... it will delay a little a release of Mars? sure it will... but in the long way it will be better. I would like to hear your opinions, cheers, Esteban

Hello all, Maybe I am simply getting confused by reading code from an "old" image, but I am trying to install Citezen. As I read the configuration, it was written in terms of Seaside 2.8, but it looks like 3.0 is being installed. Any ideas? I am open to thinking about Seaside 3, but my packages will fail to load due to the configuration changes. So far, all I have found is that I need to "change to the new system" but not much more than that. Perhaps the answer is to comment out the offending #initialize code, load everything, and then worry about how to get them registered. As slick as it is to be able to use Seaside to configure my Seaside apps, I do not want to trust myself on that front; I want them to be secured from the beginning, and temporarily re-configured for development as needed, and then programmatically switched back to secure-or-nothing. Semi-rhetorical question: should Citezen be loading Seaside? Could/should there be a Citezen-base or something that just reads BibTeX, and then other things that do all of the web-enabled work? All I do with it is parse entries, for which is very valuable. Bill

I just uploaded the VMMaker/CMakeVMMaker package, and since couple of people noticed it, and started asking (privately) what is it, i decided to do little "premature" explanation. In short: - it is a part of future automated build system. Its only in prototype phase, and some protocol and even classes could appear/disappear. The idea of this is simple: we put all knowledge about VM building process into image, and then generating sources & cmake config, which then doing the rest. This will allow us to easily change configs and generate not just VM source(s) , but also appropriate makefile(s) on the fly , without the need of dealing with pesky files on file system. Because what is most annoying with file-based configuration that it is spread among multiple (sub)directories with a lot of different include files, and its really hard to learn a project structure from it, and even harder to alter it. So, what the hell: i prefer to work with classes and methods instead of directories and files. What i think is most cool thing about it, that anyone could make own config by simply subclassing a particular 'official' configuration to make own custom VM, with own subset of plugins, settings etc. And then once you tested it, it could be made public and built automatically by anyone else, without extra manual steps and perusing in file system, IDE(s) etc. I plan to create configurations for both squeak and cog vms on all major platforms, then i will use them to automatically build VMs using Hudson server.
