[Pharo-project] Cog doesn't load anymore in PharoCore1.3 because of the removal of AbstractLauncher
by Mariano Martinez Peck May 10, 2011

May 10, 2011

AbstractLauncher was removed in: http://code.google.com/p/pharo/issues/detail?id=4002 Cog has a subclass from AbstractLauncher called CommandLineLauncher, hence, it cannot be loaded anymore CommandLineLauncher has no class comment and no sender. So I have no idea what it does, nor if it can be removed from cog, nor how to solve this problem in Pharo. Cheers -- Mariano http://marianopeck.wordpress.com

[Pharo-project] Additional Test for Shared Queue (s)
by pharo-project-owner＠lists.gforge.inria.fr May 10, 2011

May 10, 2011

While trying to track down a bug, I started thinking that there was a problem with SharedQueue. There isn't, but there were no tests that convinced me of that. So I wrote one that actually has two processes reading and writing many times to a Q. The same tests works for NSSharedQueue (except that the class under test is hard coded). I suggest that putting these tests in the appropriate packages/core would be a good idea. Tests attached.

[Pharo-project] moose = smalltalk ambassador
by Tudor Girba May 10, 2011

May 10, 2011

Hi, Moose (http://moosetechnology.org) is a Smalltalk ambassador. Actually, I think it's the best ambassador we have right now to persuade professional developers to look into Smalltalk. Let me tell you why. Moose is a platform for software and data analysis and includes components like: Glamour, Mondrian or PetitParser. Moose solves a real and important problem that developers (both Smalltalkers and non-Smalltalkers) have: how to improve the productivity of the effort spent on assessment. Moose is an innovation in this domain because it enables a completely different approach through which developers craft their own tools fast (http://humane-assessment.com) The cool thing is that they build these tools by programming Smalltalk in Pharo, and thus they get to learn the language and the platform first. Moose also comes with exposure. For example, this year I will be presenting Moose and humane assessment at some large industry oriented conferences: - Jazoon (http://jazoon.com) - GotoCon Aarhus (http://gotocon.com/aarhus-2011/) - GotoCon Amsterdam (http://gotocon.com/amsterdam-2011/) All in all, if you want to promote Smalltalk, and Pharo in particular, you might want to look into it. And you are always welcome to contribute, follow us and make noise: - http://www.moosetechnology.org - http://twitter.com/#!/moosetechnology - http://www.facebook.com/pages/moosetechnologyorg/152851281427491 Cheers, Doru -- www.tudorgirba.com "No matter how many recipes we know, we still value a chef."

[Pharo-project] NetNameResolver localHostName - Mac OS always returns an ip address string
by Nick Ager May 10, 2011

May 10, 2011

Hi, When I call the following on my Mac: NetNameResolver localHostName the result is an ip address string eg '192.168.4.174' Is there some configuration work required on the Mac to ensure that #localHostName returns a name rather than ip address. Currently: $ hostname Nick-Agers-MacBook-Pro2.local $ cat /etc/hosts cat /etc/hosts 127.0.0.1 localhost # The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts ::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback fe00::0 ip6-localnet ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix ff02::1 ip6-allnodes ff02::2 ip6-allrouters ff02::3 ip6-allhosts I'd be happy with #localHostName returning the hostname or an entry in /etc/hosts I've tested on Pharo 1.1.1 & 1.2.1 both using a COG vm Thanks Nick

[Pharo-project] Time to rename copyWithTrailerBytes: ?
by Mariano Martinez Peck May 10, 2011

May 10, 2011

If I understand correctly, before the trailers we used to use just an array of bytes...now we use a CompiledMethodTrailer. So, the method copyWithTrailerBytes: is misleading. cheers -- Mariano http://marianopeck.wordpress.com

Re: [Pharo-project] Issue in loading SqueakDBX Patch
by sourav roy May 10, 2011

Hi Peck, Instead of running the Gofer script, can I download the each package and load it in my Pharo. This I am asking because the office environment is secured because of whicham not able to do load the required configuration packages via script. Please if it is possible for you the suggest me the names of the packages required to load SqueakDBX. P.S:Screen shot of the error given below. Thanks&Regards,Sourav Roy|Misys Loan IQ Dev Team|HCL Technologies|SEZBangalore|Mob:8861133201From: Mariano Martinez Peck [mailto:marianopeck@gmail.com] Sent: Monday, May 09, 2011 6:06 PMTo: Sourav RoySubject: Re: Re: [Pharoproject] Issue in loading SqueakDBX PatchOn Mon, May 9, 2011 at 1:30 PM, sourav roywrote:Hi, I loaded the following patches in pharo 1.2.1 which i downloaded from http://www.squeaksource.com/SqueakDBX.
