slow Pharo downloading and Travis

Hi, over the past week+ downloading the latest Pharo 6 version has been extremely slow -- 5+ minutes to download the zip. a) is there a known reason for this? b) is there a way to know what is the current latest image of particular Pharo without downloading it? Could we include e.g. "latest.txt" file into http://files.pharo.org/image/60/ (and /70/ etc) that will include the latest image number? Because then we can cache on travis side which could significantly reduce the demands on pharo infrastructure. Peter

PharoLauncher - uninformative Pharo7 template names

Attached is what I see for Pharo 7 images in PharoLauncher. I presume the top one is the latest, but Its a bit hard to tell :P Anyone else seeing this? Loading ConfigurationOfPharoLauncher-ChristopheDemarey.53 (latest) and doing "ConfigurationOfPharoLauncher loadDevelopment" which loads PharoLauncher-Core-ChristopheDemarey.116 (latest) This is with Pharo builds 60486 and 60510, and same VM for both... Win32 built on May 31 2017 03:09:04 GMT Compiler: 5.4.0 VMMaker versionString VM: 201705310241 CoInterpreter VMMaker.oscog-eem.2231 uuid: de62947a-7f40-4977-a232-e06a3a80c939 May 31 2017 (but btw, does that look strange? The 60510 image was lauched from the original 60486-PharoLauncher which said it was downloading the matching VM, so I kind of expect each image to have a different VM ?? ) cheers -ben

Maybe better pinning messages? (inspired by [Pinning Objects in Pharo])

Hi. We now have very generic message names: - pin - unpin - setPinned: - isPinned Problem that they collide with possible domain related names. For example I implemented pinning of tabs in Calypso and I found that I overrides #pin and #isPinned messages. Then I fix it with different names. Probably menus also uses pin word but without overrides What you think about renaming pinning messages? Something like: - pinMemory - unpinMemory - isMemoryPinned - setPinnedMemory: - pinMemoryDuring: (if we will introduce it) I think it is easy to do now because not much code uses pinning

Iceberg

Hi, It is amazing to see how fast Pharo progresses and moves closer to release. Therefore it may happen that after a week of absence there is so much new stuff that I just loose track of changes and sometimes old behaviour does not correspond new reality and "nothing works" :) Probably it is my case now. I would like to work on a project hosted on github. I tried iceberg:dev-0.4, iceberg:dev-0.5, iceberg-master but didn't succeed.. [Ann][Pillar] Travis -> Bintray for PDFs

Hi with Damien Pollet, we went over all the booklets and some of the Pharo books currently written in Pillar and made sure that each time you commit - a travis job is run - latex is produced as well as pdf - the pdf is stored on bintray - the release versions are stored on the github repo (I should verify) So now you can just do a PR and you get a super nice PDF. poor state of fuel

I'm migrating most of my projects to pharo 6.1 at the moment. I come from pharo 4, I skipped pharo 5. I use 64 bit which removes a lot of stuff that does not need to be installed and makes deployment better. That really feels much better. I use jenkins and there if a test fails a fuel dump is written to disk. The jenkins server is ubuntu linux with the vm of the opensuse build. My laptop has Mac OS and cannot read back those fuel dumps. I use the same image version on jenkins and my laptop. Both are 64bit. I asked that on discord and there was a mentioning that not only the 64 bit fuel has problems. So I wanted to ask what is the state of fuel right now. I consider fuel one of the core technologies in pharo and it is sad if it just stops working. Any feedback is highly appreciated, Norbert

Hi All, I am finally glad to announce an initial version of my secret experiment, Lowtalk: https://github.com/ronsaldo/lowtalk Lowtalk is a new Smalltalk dialect that generates relocatable binary object code, that can be linked with any C program or used to generate a standalone executable with the C linker. I am designing Lowtalk as a language for video game developing, where performance and multi-threading support is important. The Lowtalk compiler is completely written in Pharo. The main features of Lowtalk are the following: - The compiler is actually a meta circular evaluator, whose features are used for bootstraping the Lowtalk kernel. - The Lowtalk object model, including the layout of the objects is defined in the language itself. - Direct interface with C. There is an almost 1:1 mapping between the Lowtalk native types and the C types. There is a syntax extension for calling C functions. -Support for real multi-threading. - The current object model uses automatic reference counting, which is slow, but makes supporting real multi-threading easier. - Immediates are based on the Spur object model. - Partial support for generating debugging information in the DWARF standard. It is possible to place breakpoints and get correct stack traces with gdb. Lowtalk is on the line of my work with Lowcode, and I am planning on making a Lowtalk backend that uses Lowcode. The Lowtalk type system is almost the same as the one that I described at the paper: Lowcode: Extending Pharo with C Types to Improve Performance I will make a video later, and a proper demonstration at ESUG.
