Hi! today I started to look at of why my benchmark in the CI stalled/didn't complete and I see three separate issues and wonder how to address them properly? I have a truncated log attached Issues: * In my CI script I disable Deprecation warnings but this has no influence on Deprecation>>#transform. This means that it will try to write the changes?! To scale we start the same image multiple times. * Somehow writing the log fails (and the TCP connection fails the same time?!) with a primitive error. * Errors "recurse". So while we try to exit the image it seems to fail the same way and tries again.. which fails again.. which fails again..at some point no new context will be allocated. Solutions? * Prevent new errors in NonInteractiveUIManager>>#unhandledErrorDefaultAction:? * Check in >>#transform if transformation is disabled and then return early? * ??? No idea.. They can't do this safely because a GC (scavenge) can happen during a callback, which then causes chaos when the copyBits primitive tries to access objects that have been moved under its feet. I've done work to fix callbacks so that when there is a failure it is the copyBits primitive that fails, instead of apparently the callback return primitive. One of the apparent effects of this fix is to stop the screen opening up too small; another is getting the background colour right, and yet another is eliminating bogus pixels in the VGTigerDemo demo. But more work is required to fix the copyBits and warpBits primitives. There are a few approaches one might take: a) fixing the primitive so that it saves and restores oops around the callbacks using the external oop table [InterpreterProxy>>addGCRoot: & removeGCRoot:]. That's a pain but possible. [It's a pain because all the derived pointers (the start of the destForm, sourceForm, halftoneForm and colorMapTable) must be recomputed also, and of course most of the time the objects don't move; we only scavenge about once every 2 seconds in normal running] b) fixing the primitive so that it pins the objects it needs before ever invoking a callback [this is a pain because pinning an object causes it to be tenured to old space if it is in new space; objects can't be pinned in new space, so instead the pin operation forwards the new space object to an old space copy if required and answers its location in old space, so a putative withPinnedObjectsDo: operation for the copyBits primitive looks like withPinnedFormsDo: aBlock <inline: #always> self cppIf: SPURVM & false ifTrue: [| bitBltOopWasPinned destWasPinned sourceWasPinned halftoneWasPinned | (bitBltOopWasPinned := interpreterProxy isPinned: bitBltOop) ifFalse: [bitBltOop := interpreterProxy pinObject: bitBltOop]. The primitive would then simply be retried. d) ? I like c) as it's very lightweight, but it has issues. It is fine to use for callbacks *before* cop[yBits and warpBits move any bits (the lockSurface and querySurface functions). But it's potentially erroneous after the unlockSurface primitive. For example, a primitive which does an xor with the screen can't simply be retried as the first, falling pass, would have updated the destination bits but not displayed them via unlockSurface. But I think it could be arranged that no objects are accessed after unlockSurface, which should naturally be the last call in the primitive (or do I mean showSurface?). So the approach would be to check for GCs occurring during querySurface and lockSurface, failing if so, and then caching any and all state needed by unlockSurface and showSurface in local variables. This way no object state is accessed to make the unlockSurface and showSurface calls, and no bits are moved before the queryDurface and lockSurface calls. If we used a failure code such as #'object may move' then the primitives could answer this when a GC during callbacks is detected and then the primitive could be retried only when required. Dear World, The time has come for Pharo 6.0! Pharo is a pure object-oriented programming language and a powerful environment, focused on simplicity and immediate feedback. This is our most significant release yet. Here are some highlights: - Pharo is now provided in 64-bit version in Linux and OSX and brings even better performance and stability (beware, 64bits version is a new technology and a small amount of tests is still failing) - A new code changes management system named Epicea for easier reviewing and recovering of your code easily - Integrated support for Git through an easy-to-use tool for repositories and commits management named Iceberg (as a preview for Pharo 6, it will be the default in Pharo 7) - The unified foreign function interface (UnifiedFFI) for interfacing with the outside world is significantly improved - The PharoVM is now part of OpenSmalltalk initiative - Introduction of object immutability, alternative bytecode sets and block closures independent of outer context - Pharo can now be bootstrapped from source code managed by Git - Pharo modularity is improved - Pharo is faster - The Dark Theme was improved and set as default color theme of Pharo These are just the more prominent highlights, but the details are just as important. We have closed 1474 issues in Pharo 6.0 (a more complete changelog can be found at https://github.com/pharo-project/pharo-changelogs/blob/master/Pharo60Change…) While the technical improvements are significant (starting the transition to 64bits is a remarkable achievement), still the most impressive fact is that the new code that got in the main Pharo 6.0 image was contributed by more than 80 people. Github package management beta

Hi All, I've been invited to participate in github's Bera test of their new package management support. I don't know much, if anything, about the software except that it supports RubyGems (Ruby), Maven (Java) and npm (JavaScript) formats. My contact at github has asked me to supply a list of email addresses of those who would like to test the software. My contact will provide documentation. If you would like to participate please reply to me using this same subject line and including in the body of the message the email you'd like used. Please do top post. CPU and RAM usage of Pharo3 vs. Pharo6

Hey! my current major deployment is still with Pharo3 and due some bigger changes I start to migrate to Pharo6 and today I finally managed to update the test deployment (and be happy with it). The test is not scientific but maybe an early indicator that there is something to look at? The image is idle and not handling any application payload so it might be a fair comparison because of that. RSS + ~16 MiB RAM (~53 Mib vs. ~69 Mib) CPU + ~0.005s per real second passed (think of Amazon AWS why that could matter) (In ~1400s wall clock 57.8s vs. 50.86s cpu time was used) Does anyone else see this increased usage? Has anyone explored the source of it? Does anyone of you share the concern I have? :) holger Outline of the setup: * Take a Pharo3 or Pharo6 base image * Load my code (and its dependencies, big difference is version of Voyage) * Start the images on the test system * Opens a TCP connection, initialize VoyageMongo * Wait for work Look at top for RSS and CPU time used.
