Status of Pharo VM for FreeBSD

Hi all, I have a question regarding the status of the PharoVM for UNIX operating systems, especially FreeBSD. As far as I have seen in the actual sources there is some support for FreeBSD available but for me itâs not clear whether itâs only partial or complete. For me it looks more partial (eg. there are no build instructions for FreeBSD and the default offers are only Mac, Linux and Windows), I havenât tried to build it yet but I am thinking about to do that and want to get an idea about the efforts. I have successfully build a PharoVM for openindiana (an OpenSolaris derivate). It runs both Pharo and Squeak images (at least partially, see below). I bootstrapped this on my Mac and used what was already available low level. Alas it has two problems until now: 1. Sound is not working properly (just a single click when doing some sound output and then silence). 2. NativeBoost is not working (atm it is based on the Linux version of NativeBoost). As my time is very limited (doing everything in my spare time) I would like to get NativeBoost working on openindiana first, and then trying to build an actual PharoVM for FreeBSD. Therefore the question regarding the status of PharoVM for FreeBSD. Of course any hints where to start with the NativeBoost problem would be highly appreciated :) Regards Andreas

Ways to do 32-bit arithmetics?

Hi: I am porting some benchmarks to Pharo, which rely on a deterministic random number generator that uses 32 bit values. In order to have properly comparable results across platforms, it needs to generated the same sequence of numbers. So, I am looking for efficient ways to implement it, any ideas? I am a little at a loss, with SmallInts and Long Ints, how to get the proper 32-bit values, and how to apply the correct shifts, especially the right shift can be problematic. Code examples below. Metacello: Resolving Conflicting Attributes

Dale taught me something helpful (and maybe a little obscure) while fixing ConfigurationOfXtreams... Problem: Say you have a platform attribute #pharo4.x, and a #customProjectAttribute #FileSystem. The problem is that the FileSystem-related packages required for #pharo4.x are different than those for the default cases. spec for: #'pharo4.x' do: [ spec package: 'Xtreams-TerminalsFileSystem' with: 'Xtreams-TerminalsFileSystem.pharo40-SeanDeNigris.4' ]. ... spec for: #FileSystem do: [ spec package: 'Xtreams-TerminalsFileSystem' with: 'Xtreams-TerminalsFileSystem-nice.1'. ] Solution: Nest a "spec for: #FileSystem do:" inside the "spec for: #pharo4.x do:" declaring the #pharo4.x-specifics spec for: #'pharo4.x' do: [ spec for: #'FileSystem' do: [ spec package: 'Xtreams-TerminalsFileSystem' with: 'Xtreams-TerminalsFileSystem.pharo40-SeanDeNigris.4' ]. MySQL driver

Often times, I have to work with Smalltalk (pick your favorite one) and MySQL.Â I have to deal with multiple versions of MySQL and, unfortunately, incompatible code between Squeak and Pharo.Â I'm thinking of rewriting the MySQL driver to handle different MySQL versions (3.23 up to 5.7), Squeak (3.x up to 4.6) and Pharo (1.0 up to 4.0). Obviously, I'd make sure the driver would handle the different MySQL handshake protocols, password encryption methods and different storage engines (MyISAM, InnoDB and MEMORY) as well as partitions, MERGE tables and views and the oooooh-soooo-different behaviors of the ZEROFILL option and ever-changing server commands (that come and go between versions)!Â I already have a gazillion versions of MySQL servers installed and a bunch of SUnit tests (for another project of mine) to handle all the subtleties of those different versions.Â Is there any interest in such a thing before I spend (quite) some time on this?
