Recommendation for password encryption?

Hi guys. Some time ago I asked about the best way to encrypt a password. Some of the recommendations I got was: 1) Generally for passwords you do not write a decrypt method for security purposes (eg you do not want people to be able to reverse engineer the encrypted password easily) 2) put a little salt 3) There is http://www.squeaksource.com/Cryptography/PasswordHashingFFI 4) I should not decrypt password but instead I should compare both encrypted versions to see if they are equal. My scenario is the following. I need to store database passwords in text files. So I don't want to let them as plain text. And while I understand 4), I think it's a different scenario than mine. I know that some database driver may allow you to directly send the encrypted password. But still...I have another similar scenario in which I have to store a password and then send it (unencrypted)...so I kind of really need a bi-directional encryption. Now..I would try to avoid having an external library + FFI. Any ideas what is the best thing I can do? And how could I solve 1) if I want bidirectional like in my case? Hi, I followed the recent discussion and initial code about "Pomodoro" and since (until now) I used a timer written in Java I thought it would be a good idea to replace it with a Smalltalk one ;) I grabbed the HOPomodoro code from Phil and since it was marked as "experiment" I thought it would be good to write a new clean implementation with tests for Pharo 2.0. Thanks Phil - hope you are not angry that I hijacked the idea ... Attached is a screenshot of the tool. Install ======= Go to the Config browser in Pharo 2.0 ("Tools" -> "Config Browser") and load "Pomodoro" from the "Verified" tab. A new timer should appear and you can just click on "Start" to run the timer. When it finished it turns red, beeps and informs the user. How to use ========== You can open a new pomodoro (defaults 25 minutes) from the world menu ("Tools" -> "Pomodoro"). Customize ========= You can customize the pomodoro using Smalltalk. Here are a few examples: "open a new 25 minute one" Pomodoro new open "Opens a new timer with one minute total time" Pomodoro timerFor: 1 minute "Provide an action when pomodoro is finished" Pomodoro timerFor: 5 seconds whenFinishedDo: [ self inform: 'Pomodoro finished'] Code ==== The project comes with 15 tests. [Pharo-project] StandardFileStream size limit?

Hey all! I have just added large file (chunkwise upload and download) support to Kom/Networking/Iliad in Pharo 1.4 and while testing it I tried uploading a 2.9Gb file. I haven't looked at the exact error message, and I haven't tried writing a trivial test - but the "half written" file on disk is almost EXACTLY 2Gb (2147483647) so I am wondering - do we still have a 2Gb file size limit? This is "one click 1.4" on Ubuntu 64 with ext4. regards, GÃ¶ran

I've been struggling to get the whole thing to work in Pharo 2.0 So, here are some pointers: I am using Xcode 4.6.3 with command line tools installed. I used the MySQL 32-bit client: mysql-connector-c-6.1.0-osx10.7-x86.dmg I used opendbx stable-1.4 To compile OpenDBX itself in 32 bits mode and all, here is the script I used. To test that things were okay, I created the sodbxtest user, database, and all in MySQL. Then let's make sure we can use that one: mysql -usodbxtest -psodbxtest sodbxtest And then went to stable-1.4/test and issued: ./odbxtest -b mysql -h localhost -p 3306 -d sodbxtest -u sodbxtest -w sodbxtest Which should work. You can open the MySQL Workbench Admin tab > server status tab and see the commands issued. I had to do a symlink in: : /usr/local/pharo/bin/pharo-vm/Pharo.app/Contents/MacOS/Plugins/ (where I have my pharo vm installed) so that: libopendbx.dylib was pointing to /usr/local/lib/libopendbx.dylib Then, start the image where you have loaded the OpenDBXDriver configuration and run the tests. You can get the configuration from the World menu > Configurations OpenDBXDriver (GuillermoPolito.20) I installed the configuration and then did: (ConfigurationOfOpenDBXDriver project version: #stable) load. All tests for the MySQL backend turned up green. Maybe someone can put the above things in the right sections on the DBXTalk site, I didn't got enough info for the OSX version. Next step is to try to get GLORP running, not sure I'll go that route. Phil

Hello I think you read about Mocketry and know that It provides same "should syntax" DSL like project Phexample. There is problem between two projects. We both implement #should message in Object class. So when somebody want Phexample Mocketry become broken and vice versa. In the past I actually only read about Phexample tests reusage idea with #given message. And I didn't know that It provides "should syntax" too. Now I read about it and look at code (thank's Yuriy Tymchuk) and I have some suggestions about it. First few words about state of Mocketry project. Mocketry is not based on SSpec (I was google such wrong opinion). It is just implement SSpec idea about executable specifications and "should syntax". And specifications part with DSL was extracted from Mocketry to StateSpecs project. So Mocketry is only about mocks and behaviour specs. Idea of executable specifications is not about replacement "assert syntax" with "should syntax". It is about building reusable first class objects which can validate domain objects. For example there are EqualitySpec, ElementsCountSpec, ClassSpec. All this specs present "valid state" of objects. They know how to validate objects. State specs can be used in tests, UI and any other domain where you want put descriptions about what it mean "valid object". I start use StateSpecs in Presenty to build object editor. With specs I put requirements on model aspects. I am sure Magritte provides something similar in description objects. So StateSpecs solve very general problem: how to describe validation rules for objects and how to make such descriptions reusable. To make it convenient and readable StateSpecs provides two kind of DSL: - should syntax to immediately check object state - first class words to create spec instances with more readable way: Instance of: SomeClass, Equal to: #some, Containing item: arrayItem and others First option can be used in tests instead #assert: expressions. Last can be used in mock message arguments. StateSpecs provide very simple way to extend it DSL based on pragmas: Instance of: aClass <syntax: #(be an instance of:)> ^ClassSpec for: aClass Equal to: anObject <syntax: #(equal:)> <syntax: #(be equal:)> ^self return: (EqualitySpec pattern: anObject) Containing item: anObject <syntax: #(include:)> ^ElementContainmentSpec requiredElement: anObject And with this you can write: object should be an instance of: SomeClass object should equal: #some object should be equal: #some array should include: item. So with such approach both kind of DSL extended at one place. Ok. Now my main suggestion. Let's Phexample use StateSpecs for "should syntax". I can provide all "should protocol" of Phexample in StateSpecs. So it will be transparent for current users. It just few extra pragmas and classes in StateSpecs-DSL package. Maybe it is already done by Yuriy Tymchuk. With such integration both projects will just improved. What do you think? Best regards, Denis

Hi Mariano, I've made a FFI library on Squeaksource that works on Linux. http://www.squeaksource.com/Cryptography/PasswordHashingFFI-PaulDeBruicker.… You need to install the 32 bit versions of libcrypt and libxcrypt if you're using a 64 bit linux os. Using crypt can hash passwords using MD5, DES, SHA256, SHA512. Using libxcrypt can hash passwords using bcrypt. If its for a new installation use bcrypt or SHA512 to hash the passwords. bcrypt is better because its slower, and allegedly future proof. to get a hashed password use BCryptLinuxFFI bcrypt:'mypassword' to check it against a stored hash use: BCryptLinuxFFI check:'mypassword' against: storedHash

I've been investigating with text. I found things that do work like: ((Text withAll: 'foo') , (Text string: '*' attribute: (TextAnchor new anchoredMorph: EllipseMorph new)) , (Text withAll: 'bar')) asMorph openInWorld. ((Text withAll: 'foo') , (Text string: '*' attribute: (TextAnchor new anchoredMorph: ThemeIcons confirmIcon)) , (Text withAll: 'bar')) asMorph openInWorld. But doing: ((Text withAll: 'foo') , (Text string: 'some link' attribute: (TextURL new url:'http://philippeback.eu')) , (Text withAll: 'bar')) asMorph openInWorld. gives me a nice purple 'some link' bit but clicking on it fails with MessageNotUnderstood: TextURL>>actOnClick:for:in:editor: Damn! Hi nicolas We would really like to have only one number parser in Pharo as well as handling the 1.0s syntax marcus raised a question that I could not answer. Do you habve nfrmation to share with us so that we can take a decision? Stef so the strange thing is that this is *explicitly* implemented in SqNumberParser to not allow 2.0s - do not allow single s without following digits as ScaledDecimal It is not explained why this is a good idea. In general, we need to merge the whole NumberParser hierarchy into one class, i don't understand why we have three classes now.

Hello! I'm porting code from Cincom Smalltalk to Pharo. It's a web application so I've got several WAComponent instances and one component which inherits from WAFileLibrary that renders images. In the original code ( the one that runned in VW) i had the following instance method in the component that inherits from WAFileLibrary: logoJpg ^ByteArray asPackagedString: '?=#?8@@PR$YIQ @A@ D@X@A @@C?8P))QW!)Y @@RT$*@@ @@@@G@AHA@0@......etc etc' But now when i run it in Pharo the debbugger doesn't recognize #asPackagedString: message. Max, Why was the contract of SHA1>>hashStream: changed ? It used to return a ByteArray like other HashFunction subclasses, now it returns an Integer. I see that you also changed the tests with this assumption. MD5 hashMessage: 'foo'. #[172 189 24 219 76 194 248 92 237 239 101 79 204 196 164 216] SHA1 hashMessage: 'foo'. 68123873083688143418383284816464454849230703155 It broke Zinc-WebSockets in 3.0 and now I will have to do an ugly hack to make the code work on multiple Pharo versions. Grease conflicts #packages with RPackage

Hi guys, I was trying to build a new image with latest Pharo 2.0 with all the frameworks I use. While installing, I get a dnu in: packageFromOrganizer: anRPackageOrganizer "This method returns the package this method belongs to. It takes into account classes and traits. And GRPackage DOES implement a CLASS side method #packages that answers instances of GRPackage.....not RPackage... So...which one do we prefix? GRPackage class #packages to #greasePackages? BTW, there are yet more class side implementations of #packages, which are basically subclasses for the HelpSystem (CustomHelp). So we have for example SUnitAPIDocumentation, RegexAPIDocumentation, ProfStefAPIHelp, HelpAPIDocumentation, AnnouncementsAPIDocumentation. Guess we should update the HelpSystem as well? Can't open image file without write access

Hi, if I try to launch a Pharo image and the current user only has read access, I see a black window that never disappears. How can I launch an image without having write access to it? Hi, Sebastian asked me for a solution to the following problem: reading a JSON map where the values should be instances of a specific domain object. This was already possible for lists. Using the newly added NeoJSONCustomMapping>>#mapWithValueSchema: this is now possible, as the following unit test shows: testDictionaryOfObject2 | data json reader | data := Dictionary new. data at: #one put: NeoJSONTestObject2 example1; at: #two put: NeoJSONTestObject2 example1. json := NeoJSONWriter toString: data. reader := NeoJSONReader on: json readStream. reader for: #DictionaryOfObject2 customDo: [ :mapping | mapping mapWithValueSchema: NeoJSONTestObject2 ]. self assert: (reader nextAs: #DictionaryOfObject2) equals: data Note that the mapping mechanism in NeoJSON is optional. Without mapping you get Arrays and Dictionaries back, that you can then convert to your domain objects in the a next step. With mapping however, these intermediary representations are not used and maps or lists are parsed while creating and populating your domain objects directly, which should be more efficient. SmalltalkHub already has team functionality and the according teams are already setup. Grease belongs to Seaside since it was developed by the seaside team. Therefore it should be a "Seaside team" project also on STHub as before. There are already team projects for the Seaside team. See http://smalltalkhub.com/#!/~Seaside with already migrated code. So for Grease we/or the seaside team should use: http://smalltalkhub.com/#!/~Seaside/Grease We should align with the seaside team/developers, otherwise we would add more confusion regarding the code move and the configuration. Looks like http://smalltalkhub.com/#!/~Seaside/Seaside31/ and http://smalltalkhub.com/#!/~Seaside/Seaside30 already contain Grease. So it is already migrated to STHub. In it's current state it's directly bound to Seaside. There is now also a Jenkins Job [1] and it looks like version 1.0.8/baseline 1.0.8 of ConfigurationOfGrease refer to http://www.smalltalkhub.com/mc/Seaside/Seaside30/main So I dont know if http://smalltalkhub.com/#!/~Seaside/Grease or http://smalltalkhub.com/#!/~hernan/Grease are really necessary. I've limited net access these days - maybe someone can clearify about a future Grease repo on the "seaside-dev" mailinglist. Since the Seaside community invented/implemented Grease I agree with Tobias that it is (by default) the official maintainer and should decide to avoid many forks/teams. Thx T. Hi, try this: This will start opening infinite number of debuggers, because of A>>doesNotUnderstand: #halt. Ok, so, if I replace /self halt/ with /Halt signal/, it will do the same, but now because of A>>doesNotUnderstand: #inspector. But in both cases, after successfully (before stack is full) interrupting the recursion with Alt+., only the Process Browser is full of "Morphic UI process:MorphicUIManager>>openDebuggerOn:context:label:contents:fullView:" no real debugger is visible... My question: How to debug code inside DNU method? Bug? Feature? I know, the full stack issue can be solved by a watchdog, is it planned? And it was discussed before here on mailinglist, but with different code examples. Well laziness gets the upper half from me and I wonder if there is a software available in Smalltalk which takes an xsd fiel and generates an xml-writer from it which than adheres to the xsd descriptions. In my opinion this is too usefule to not been implemented yet ;-) Regards Friedrich

Filing in chunks

What is the "official" way to file in chunks in Pharo? I'm porting something from Dolphin to Pharo 2, with no purpose of having compatibility between both (it is, I want to continue with it on Pharo). I've been manually "translating" the chunk from Dolphin into Pharo format, but the problem is... I can't find a way to File In the file contents! Using the File Explorer, there is a contextual menu in the contents pane of the selected file "FileIn Selection (G)", but as soon as I select some chunks or the whole contents to file In I get a MessageNotUnderstood of #fileIn in ReadWriteStream (the selected contents). I couldn't find another menu for filing in in a Workspace (expected), SystemBrowser (Nautilus) nor anywhere else. I'm doing it with 'myChanges.st' asFileReference fileIn But I was expecting more user friendly, like a chunk browser. Any clues? Hi, I asked this question before http://forum.world.st/Pharo-dev-Latest-vm-on-Ubuntu-8-04-4-LTS-tt4689467.ht… and yes I know that Ubuntu 8.04 is old, but I am really stuck. I need to deploy a Pharo #20619 image and I need a VM that works on Ubuntu 8.04 _and_ that is not 'too old' (like Eliot's most recent CogVM where I am getting lots of NB errors as well). The problem seems to be the dependency on the glibc 2.11. Has anyone successfully solved this issue ? Thx, Sven
