So, here is the proposal: Name: Khubbatov Rustem Difficulty Level: Intermediate Description A framework for building Human-Machine Interfaces with Pharo back-end providing model, and presentation front-end in Amber. Technical Details A concrete task that should be implemented with this project is a prototype of UI for network management system or SCADA. Server-side (Pharo) will simulate network components and their data, and provide relevant events for client (Amber). The latter will present network items, their state and associated information, and provide UI to control them. An important part of this system is a communication layer between Amber and Pharo. Benefits for the Student The student will gain experience in building client-server applications with advanced UI and providing two-way communication between client and server. Benefits for the Community An ability to create highly interactive web-based applications is a must-have feature for any modern development system. Amber is a bleeding edge in this area in Smalltalk world. A good communication layer between Amber and (for example) Pharo is a very appealing decision for building complex client-server systems. This is a fun one to find out about by accident... Hey, what happened to my temporary variable names? Oh, they're decompiled because my image folder was deleted while deleting my home folder because the folder being deleted contained a symlink to it. Thank god for backups... and that it was deleting alphabetically, so mostly rarely-changed config files were deleted (i think/hope)... Hi guys, My 1.3 #13299 image is blocked again, but just UI not responding to any input events, while Aida web app server is running smoothly in backrgound. >From Transcript I can see that last action was a new image backup procedure, which is done simply by : OSProcess waitForCommand: 'cp some.image some-bck.image'. This procedure is called from a background process and report to Transcript its start and end. Is there something wrong with that? Or is some interference with OSProcess semaphores? (I saw such suspicious thing once before). In any case, is there a way to unblock image now? Ctrl or Alt . doesn't help. Hi there, for those, who interested, i updated a NBOpenGL configuration. Changes are: - updated GL API to most recent available (taken directly from opengl specs). Now there is about 300 more methods to explore :) - finally dealt with win32 support code and made it working again - fixed the GLX function prefix , which should be 'glX' not 'glx' To load it in 1.4 use: Gofer new squeaksource: 'NBOpenGL'; package: 'ConfigurationOfNBOpenGL'; load. and then (ConfigurationOfNBOpenGL project version: '1.0.2') load I did not tested the update thoroughly.. so i would appreciate if people will try it out and tell how it goes. -- Best regards, Igor Stasenko.

The proposal: ----- Name: ARM jitter for Squeak VM Level: Advanced Possible mentor: Eliot Miranda Possible second mentor: Igor Stasenko Description The Squeak VM is the dynamic virtual machine used for many open-source software projects such as Scratch [1], eToys [2], Pharo [3], the Newspeak language [4], the innovative web framework Seaside [5] and many others. CogVM [6] is a development of the Squeak VM which adds a powerful Intel x86 JITer [7]. The CogVM JIT has significantly improved the performance of the open-source Smalltalk projects which have adapted to use it. Increasingly low cost highly capable ARM hardware such as the Raspberry Pi [8] and the Beagle Board [9] have become widely available. In addition the new version of the one-laptop-per-child is based on the ARM platform [10]. The Squeak VM compiles for ARM platforms, but currently there is no JIT on ARM platforms, significantly decreasing the performance of popular software on ARM. The goal of this project is to add simple ARM JITTing capability to the CogVM. The Squeak and Cog VM are written in a simplified subset of Smalltalk known as slang [11] - which then generates C output and forms the basis of the VM. As the Squeak VM is a Smalltalk program, it is developed in Smalltalk, and the Cog JIT is no exception. The VM, including the JIT, is written in Smalltalk and run in the context of the Smalltalk IDE, but the JIT still generates machine-code that must be evaluated within the Smalltalk environment. On x86 is done by interfacing to an x86 simulator library derived from the Bochs x86/x86-64 PC simulator, written in C++. Implementing the ARM port should be no different. The first task will be to choose and interface to a suitable ARM simualtor/emulator. Once this is working, the ARM code generator can be incrementally developed within Smalltalk. Finally once the simulator is fully functional one can get down and dirty with an actual physical ARM machine - such as the Raspberry Pi or Beagle Board. The student will have the satisfaction of seeing performance gains for a range of high-profile projects which use the Squeak VM on ARM. Benefits to the Community The Smalltalk community will gain an initial implementation of an ARM Jitter which can then be further developed along-side the x86 dynamic translation work. As I take yet another stab at getting the Metacello Preview running on Pharo2.0, I find that OSProcess is sprinkled with references to FileDirectory ... at least in the packages referenced by the configuration, so I'm wondering if a port exists for Phar0-2.0 ... At the moment OSProcess is a prerequisite .... If there is an alternate mechanism for running shell commands from Pharo2.0, then I assume that I'll be able to use that instead ... Dale

Hello! My student is looking for a topic for her term project/paper in area of Computer Graphics and UI maybe. I didn't pay enough attention to this area for some time, so I ask if there are some tasks we could help to solve here? Please note, she has no strong background in CG. One topic could be something about Morphic, but what is it exactly? Or any other idea is welcome also. And one more thing: our university imposes some additional requirements thus not every practically useful topic can be accepted, I'll have to select so more ideas is better. TIA for any help. Hi everyone, After some very friendly help of Nick and Igor at ESUG, I managed to get the iStackVM running on my iPad again, thanks a lot guys! However, the image now shows up on only a very small portion of the screen. Is that a known issue? btw: the problem I experienced to compile the vm correctly was eventually a package-loading problem (i.e. I did not get the correct packages). This is because there is a bug in the version-method generation of Metacello. Together with Dale, we discussed that issue and Dale just solved it last friday. Johan
