[Pharo-project] Tips for efficient multi-serial handling

All, coming from a Node.JS background for those kind of tasks I'm not quite sure how to do it "correctly" in Pharo. I need to * listen on up to 32 serial (USB) ports for incoming commands. Each might use a different "protocol". * listen to network ports, midi channels or OSC * if communication is received then a response could be send over multiple of the channels mentioned above * reaction time - means incomming message, decode, encode of response and distribution over other channels should ideally be around 10^-2 s. I already found all the necessary communication classes in Pharo - and being back in Smalltalk again parsing the commands is a real pleasure :-) The one thing that makes me really nervous though is serial support. Up to now I spawn a separate (Smalltalk) process for each serial port that polls the serial port for new bytes - as far as I see polling is the only available option. Although this seems to work it wastes a considerable amount of CPU cycles IMHO. On my current system (MBP/i7) I can't have enough channels to even barely bog the system down. However the deployment platform I'm looking at is more in the range of an Raspberry Pi... In Node.JS I'd simply create callbacks for all the different incoming channels - so I wouldn't waste cycles for polling. So what would be the best/recommended way to achieve this in Pharo? [Pharo-project] Unable to use Monticello in last images from Jenkins

Hi, Since a couple of weeks i'm have not been able to download packages with Metacello on last image versions from Jenkins. Today i found that if i revert changes on httpClient method from MCHttpRepository everything works fine again. I haven't research deeply on why, i'm not an expert on Zinc, but the message that is breaking everything and making my image to receive a 400 error from squeaksource is setAcceptEncodingGzip that is addinng the gzip header to the requests. As i said, i haven't going to deep with this but as i am the only one who is watching this behavior perhaps is something only for squeaksource. If this is actually an issue and not some fault from myself, and someone give me some help, i can help with the solution. Cheers, Guido.

I have an attribute "date" in a domain object. Last week, I created some objects with this attribute. Today I created objects again with the same date value in this attribute. When comparing the dates (=), the result is false. Reason is, that in germany, we had a switch from Central European Summer Time (CEST) (Sommerzeit) to Daylight Saving Time (DST) this weekend. Date has an attribute "start" which has an instance of DateAndTime. This DateAndTime object has another value depending on the CEST/DST 2012-10-02T00:00:00+*01:00* (DST) 2012-10-02T00:00:00+*02:00* (CEST) When I create two Dates with same date, I expect that = evaluates to true, independent from the CEST/DST. But Date (Timespan) uses /= comparand ^ self class = comparand class and: [ *self start = comparand start * and: [ self duration = comparand duration ]]/ What do you recommend? Create my own compare method? Hi dimitris, if I remember correctly the idea from Mark Roos was to open source the environment/code once the company dependent parts are removed. AFAIK with an MIT license. For sure one can expect the bytecodeset and environment to be completely different from what we know from Squeak/Pharo. Some infos can be found on the web, see pointers below - but no code so far. Time will tell if it's ideas may be used to have later a Pharo dialect running on JVM as well (depending on community adoption, time, resources and technical possibility). It's not the first project to run Smalltalk on JVM. Its very silent around similar attempts like the last project "Redline" from James Ladd. At least it is active (last commit for Redline was 3 days ago). Bye T. I found this http://www.jarober.com/blog/blogView?showComments=true&printTitle=IM_98:_Rt… ,about RTalk , that is not only smalltalk run on top of JVM but almost the entire environment.Â The problem is that I cant seem to be able to find via google any site that contains the source code or something I could use ? Does anyone know if there is any official website for RTalk ? It looks quite promising and I would like to give it a try.
