Hi, I think the tutorial/book page should include a reference to "Pharo by example" instead of "Squeak by example" http://www.pharo-project.org/documentation/tutorials-books (I don't have a login otherwise I would do it) Also, it should be usefull to insert links to all required files for running examples. According to the Alien squeaksource page (wiki section) one has to evaluate ScriptLoader loadLatestPackage: 'AlienLoader' from: 'http://www.squeaksource.com/Alien'. (Smalltalk at: #AlienLoader) load But this crashes in latest core #10462 while it seems to load in core #10441. And my question about the state and a pointer to the alien plugin for win32 is also still unanswered... [Pharo-project] OT: vm performance

Hello all, Here I am referring to a vm in the OS sense. Suppose you are forced to run code on a virtual machine running on a blade computer hidden behind locked doors. Access to the machine is limited to a remote desktop connection. You suspect that the machine is far too busy for its own good. Is there any way to test that? Is there any way to separate network latency from the box being slow, or perhaps just plain busy restoring a backup to fix up the most recent crash of some piece of hardware or who-knows-what software? Something that periodically runs a lightweight benchmark and logs the results comes to mind. Is there something that is commonly used for such measurments? I would rather not add too badly to machine's workload, but it gets sloooooowwwwwww at times :( Getting some data to objectify that statement could be useful. Bill

STicky is a pluggable real-time evaluator and/or translator workspace aimed to learn languages. For a quick overview please take a look at the presentation video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9uUIEaGyoU The Smalltalk evaluator could be useful in learning courses or for newbies typing expressions, but other translators/evaluators may help with more advanced usage, it all depends of the source and target languages you're using. Some default external translators, which does the real job, were included : Smalltalk to JavaScript (ST2JS by Diego Gomez Deck) Smalltlak to Java (Smalltalk2Java by Alexandre Bergel) Smalltalk to SQL (ROE by Avi Bryant) Smalltalk to AST nodes (Marcus Denker et al) HTML validator ( Todd Blanchard) JSON to Smalltalk (Tony Garnock-Jones et al) (...contact me if you want to add your translator in the release, a facility to automatic installation of translators is provided) You can easily plug translators and the workspace will update the current contents dynamically inside a sticky-like dialog or a fixed pane, the updater interface was decoupled to make possible other kinds of widgets too, but this is a bit experimental. [Pharo-project] Mac carbon VM goes to 4.2.2Beta1U

I've updated the Macintosh Carbon VM to include the latest changes for serial port logic which was driven by changes in the Unix serial port plugin. Plus Bert identified that horizontal wheel scrolling didn't work correctly, oddly it's never worked since I think 2002. People must not use those funky dual touch/action track pads on the macintosh I'd guess. I've added these changes to the SVN tree on squeakvm.org I've also uploaded the new VM as Squeak 4.2.2beta1U.app.zip found via http://smalltalkconsulting.com/squeak.html If someone other than Bert confirm the horizontal scrolling works, plus I couldn't test the altered serial port logic since I don't have a serial like device around that my mac would talk to. Promptly report any issues... Hi Damien, Yes it definitely works -- at least for me, on Mac OS X. Recent VMs from John McIntosh have the plugin already, though on the mac it only searches for libraries in a few select places and it doesn't accept absolute paths. Hopefully this will be resolved soon; for now I've symlinked the library into my Squeak VM's plugins folder. On Linux you may have to compile a VM yourself to get the plugin; I know it's in the VM source tree.
