[Pharo-project] [ANN] 10384 extraction of MorphicExtras

This update removes the MorphicExtras package. I had to spend quite some effort to properly detangle it from the rest of the system... MorphicExtras contained examples and experimental (and some wicked) morphs (in total 110 classes). The space gained is significant: 1.5MB. If somebody is interested to recover and maintain parts of what I removed, the package is available on SqueakSource [1]. Issue 962: remove BlockArgsNode KeyWordNode - Issue 463: SmallDictionary should not be a subclass of Set (and Dictionary) cleaner SmallDictionary + more tests - removing RBSmallDictionaryTests and MethodDictionaryTestBis'. Cyrille can you check on a core image that this is ok? Because you were using a dev one so lot of tests refered to classes not loaded (RB*....) Issue 443: Adrian and I have spent some time on fixing the bug. A fix has been produced: - Kernel-adrian_lienhard.358 in PharoInbox - Traits-Alexandre_Bergel.285 contains a test Now with the Traits package loaded :) Stef

[Pharo-project] Where declared global reside... how can they be removed?

Hi everyone, I'm new to both Smalltalk and especially to Pharo (and this mailing list). I have a very basic question and would like to be directed to more info or a different mailing list if appropriate. For most tutorials (I'm using squeak tutorials), one does a lot of work in a workspace. If I make a new global variable such as: MySquare := Morph new ...once I define "MySquare" as a global variable I know I can send it many messages like: MySquare openInWorld MySquare color: Color yellow When I'm done and I close the workspace, save the image and save the image. When I open it again it will know what "MySquare" is known in any workspace. How do I remove "MySquare" and/or the associated object? How could I see or find other such global variables? - John

[Pharo-project] Creating graphics and UI in Pharo

Thanks everyone for the help with clearing the Smalltalk Dictionary variables (and best practices to avoid setting them). Since about Squeak 2.x I'd discovered smalltalk and have been learning as I go. One of the most confusing aspects is that there is very old documentation that still holds up well (the book "Inside Smalltalk") mixed with documentation that is only a few years old yet outdated. One area where this has given me the hardest time is trying to learn how to create interfaces and graphics for my programs. I know morphic has gone through and is going through many changes, but what is its future with Pharo and what would be the "best practices" for making images and UI for programs I am writing? - John

Hi all I was toying with 'http://www.squeak.org' asUrl retrieveContent and HtmlParser parse: ('http://www.squeak.org' asUrl retrieveContent) content but apparently it is not in 3.9 and it was in 3.6 so was it in Scamper? Stef

I was just doing some coding in my favorite dev environment today and I must say: Pharo is excellent!! Seriously, nice work by all of you. You have all been cranking forward; progress has been frequent, which makes it both exciting and comforting. I also realized today that the performance was weighing on me and making me not want to use Pharo recently; now it feels meaningfully better for coding. There are many issues to be dealt with yet(*), however, there are many that have been dealt with. Numerous things, like the NetNameResolver (and associated issues), have been working for me on a Mac out-of-the-box, even though there are issues on other platforms -- i started to pick through the code today to get up to speed, but... just cannot invest any serious time right now. I hope to be a contributor later this year. (*) no details available here... this thread is simply a song of praise. Nice work. Thank You all for your effort and contributions! -Cam
