[Pharo-project] kind of feedback from the presentations I did today

Hi guys today I did two presentations: smalltalk (pharo) and seaside presentation at Perl, python and rubyist (haskell and more) audience. It went well. And I was thinking: luckily we have a cool look. I think that we damage ourselves with the look of squeak for too long. Now we should really work to make our nice language shine. A guy told me that with IPython (nbot check) you can script your shell and get a debugger on error changes on the fly... and I was thinking: let us stop to live in a museum (yeah our community invented the mouse, people don;t give a shit about that, you just looks old and rubbish...). So this is why pharo is really important. We should move and smalltalk may move too and may be some people will follow. I believe that a real small kernel a cool infrastructure (compiler, tools, new Mop....) a scripting syntax (I'm working on coral and petitParser is cool: in 1h30 not knowing anything I got the parser working :)). will make smalltalk much more understandable and cooler. Let us stop to think that what is have is the best. Let us fix all the things that get in our way. Let us make little chicken steps and billion of them. We have really something to do and to dream about so this is cool. It will not be easy but this is good. GNU smalltalk shows also that this is possible to get it bootstrappable.... Stef

Please take alook at FileDirectory>>directoryContentsFor:. Does it have any business being on the instance side of FileDirectory? It looks like it _completely_ ignores the receiver and if anything should be a class method somewhere, or changed to work relative to a receiver, or something. Bill

Hello all, Sorry to keep grumbling about (aguably) faulty use of inheritance, but I've hit another one. Try FileDirectory default entries first copy. It complains about variable size instances. I have no idea what to make of this. Anyone? Regardless of the nature of the real defect, I would argue that DirectoryEntry should not be derived from a collection; at most it should hold a collection in an instance variable and provide accessors. [Pharo-project] Ugly crashes in 09.09.3 - any ideas?

I moved my code into 09.09.3 web, and it is crashing badly - the vm just dies, no indication (that I have found) as to why. Reminds me of working in C on 16 bit systems =:( By sneaking up on the crash, I see that it is quitting when asking ODBCConnection to connect. At one point, just inspecting a handle is enough to blow away the vm. Suggestions would be appreciated. I might set up a new image with just ODBC to try to reproduce it. Bill

[Pharo-project] StrikeFont Accujen in Pharo

Hallo, I'm porting a Squeak-Project to Pharo and I really need the "Accujen" StrikeFont with size 9. I know: those bitmap fonts look worse than the great FreeType fonts. But for my special case I need a very small/narrow but still readable font and there's nothing better than Accujen. So my question is, if it's possible to get the Accujen into Pharo. The StrikeFont class still exists but it seams like all fonts but DejaVu are missing now. Thanks for any help, if possible! Jochen

[Pharo-project] Cap lock madness

Hopefully somebody can point out something simple that will fix everything, but I'm to the point of declaring my move into 09.09.3 a failure. It was worth the effort because it forced me to clean up some packaging and revisit my load scripts. I figured out that when my image began to complain that the changes file was nearly too big, it was was doing so not because it was almost done loading my relatively modest amount of code, but it was because I had loaded it part way through many times, fixing bugs and accumulating LOTS of changes along the way - no problem. Since I cannot seem to copy and paste between 09.07.2 and 09.09.3 (they treat newlines differently), I thought to make yet another loader (my own) that will appear as a package with one class and a few methods to do my loading using whatever wins (installer, script loader, gofer, etc.) or a mix of them. Hopefully I can load that in either version, the code will look right, and the "script" will work. In working on the loader, my image appeared to go crazy. I was picking up things by halos when I had not intended to do so, the menus didn't look right; it was a mess. I wondered whether my new laptop had a busted/stuck control or alt key, and then noticed that the cap lock was on. Is there any reason the menus get weird when the cap lock is set? It seems like a nice way to drive off new users unless I'm missing the big picture somewhere. Bill
