Whats the easiest/cheapest way to run a Pharo web app in 2021?

Hi everyone - its been a few year since I last hosted a little Pharo web app - and the last time I did, Sven pointed me to DigitalOcean and creating a tiny instance and configuring an Ubuntu server and then copying a pharo image on to that. It recall it wasnât too bad, albeit a bit fiddlyâ¦ Now several years later - I canât recall the exact steps, and vaguely recall there was something about 32bit vs 64bit setup etc - but am wondering if things have advanced a bit and whether its much simpler these days? Iâve seen references to Docker images for Pharo, and am wondering if now that is a prime time way to easily get a small demo application up and running with minimal fuss. Does anyone have advice - or something to point me to? Ideally I want to hook something up in Gitlab CI do deploy to this thing automatically (this is where I got to a few years ago - but in picking things back up I am hoping this has all got much simpler). Marcus was very kind to help me solve this, so you should receive this message now. Anyway... see my original message below. Hope it's still useful. ----- Hi Tim, Didn't really notice this thread until now. I understand you're looking into deployment using Docker. However, to provide some perspective, we're happily running Pharo in production on a (self-managed) VPS on Hetzner Cloud (which uses 100% green energy!). We use our own adaptation of Pharo server tools based on Sven's original work:Â https://github.com/objectguild/pharo-server-tools. We started with running Pharo 7.0 and have since upgraded to Pharo 8.0. Some experience with Linux command line is certainly welcome, but it should be fairly easy to get this going. Mind you, the README is (unfortunately) _not_ up to date. Regarding Docker, I don't have much experience myself. I've only used it a couple of times to troubleshoot smalltalkCI issues, never for running a Pharo server application. Hope this is of some use to you or others. Pharo-IOT Remote Dev connection Issue

Hi, I have a PharoThings environment which Iâm updating to version 0.3.2 and keep hitting the following DNU error when runningâ¦ remotePharo := TlpRemoteIDE connectTo: (TCPAddress ip: ip port: 40423). â¦from the Mac client to the pi server (image below). A SeamlessDefaultRequestContext does not understand #ownBytes: â¦which is correct - it does not :) Iâm guessing #materializeObject in the code just before the error, should have answered a SeamlessRequest. The git page claims itâs building successfully, and Iâve tried re-installing both the client on the Mac and the server on the pi, and get the same error each time. Is this a known error? Or am I doing something wrong? Thanks in advance for any advice. Cheers, J

Esteban studied Computer Sciences at Universidad de Buenos Aires, and worked since 1994 in many object-oriented and low-level technologies in different software companies, serving in various positions from junior programmer to senior architect. In 2007 he co-founded Smallworks to offer Pharo-based agile development projects. Since 2012 he dedicated full time to developing the Pharo code and community. Problem with Pharo 9 - repositories missing

Hi everyone. I have a simple talk, or so I thought. I am trying to port a Mac Pharo/Seaside project to either a Windows 2012 server or to a Windows 10 laptop. I have set up my git credentials and that all works fine. However, when I install either 8.0 or 9.0 on my Windows 10 laptop it shows he following Repositories -- status Pharo Local repository missing Pharo-spec2 Local repository missing Pharo-newtools Local repository missing Iceberg Local repository missing Libgit-pharo-bindings Local repository missing tonel Local repository missing What on earth is going on here as installing Pharo on my Mac was seamless. I have to get the project onto a Windows machine as these are the only servers that I have. I really can't be this difficult, can it? How do I get out of this mess, given that that is a clean install? David Totally Objects

Understanding how to best structure branches to contribute to a 3rd party project

Hi Everyone - I tried asking this on Discord, but I think it got a bit lost - and perhaps for more philosophical questions, here is better. So - Iâm wondering what is the recommended way to work with another project you want to contribute to (in my case CodeParasides). So I know I can fork it and put the fork in my baseline. But Iâm assuming contributions are best done discretely on a branch per proposal (this seems to be the Pharo way - and it makes sense for ease of understanding), but if you have a few of these contributions in play (while the maintainer is evaluating them) would you then have your own âcombinationâ branch to consolidate all those fixes until they get merged in? Iâve started to try this, but merging between branches gets a bit tricky - a few times now it seems that Iceberg shows me misleading info on what is being added/removed (it always looks like my changes are going to be removed, when if fact they get added - so its a bit of a leap of faith on this). So Iâm wondering if Iâm overcomplicating things - or whether this is the suggested way to work with another project? Tim

Problem installing Seaside on Windows

Hi everyone. I have been developing a new web site using Seaside on my M1 MacBookAir and I have had no issues. To deploy it, I have to install Pharo on either a Windows 10 or a Windows Server 2012 server. Pharo has installed on both without any issues. However, I am having problems installing Seaside. I have Pharo 8.0 installed on both (64 bit version). If I try and install from the Catalog, I get the following error in the Transcript. IceGenericError: Failed to stat file 'C:/Users/david/Documents/Pharo/images/Pharo 8.0 - 64bit (stable)/pharo-local. If I try using Monticello, I get the following: Metacello new baseline:'Seaside3'; repository: 'github://SeasideSt/Seaside:master/repository'; load I got an error while cloning: There was an authentication error while trying to execute the operation: . This happens usually because you didn't provide a valid set of credentials. You may fix this problem in different ways: 1. adding your keys to ssh-agent, executing ssh-add ~/.ssh/id_rsa in your command line. 2. adding your keys in settings (open settings browser search for "Use custom SSH keys" and add your public and private keys). 3. using HTTPS instead SSH (Just use an url in the form HTTPS://etc.git) I will try to clone the HTTPS variant.
