Reverting changes in Iceberg
by Evan Donahue May 24, 2018

May 24, 2018

Hi, I was trying to merge changes from a collaborator from github into my local image and, through some flurry of menus I didn't quite comprehend, it seems to have blown away their changes and left me a commit ahead with all of their changes deleted. How can I revert back to their change, which I do see in my history, and continue from there without my erroneous most recent commit? Thanks, Evan

Handling socket timed out
by Hilaire May 24, 2018

May 24, 2018

Hi, With this code, the ConnectionTimedOut exception is never handled: | socket data | socket := Socket newUDP. socket setPort: 51284. socket waitForDataFor: 5. data := ByteArray new: 100. [[socket receiveUDPDataInto: data]    on: Error    do: ['Catched error, closing socket' crLog. socket closeAndDestroy]]    ensure: [ 'Closing socket' crLog. socket closeAndDestroy] Any reason it does not work? In Pharo I see several examples using ifCurtailed. Hilaire -- Dr. Geo http://drgeo.eu

How to LAN feature
by Hilaire May 24, 2018

May 24, 2018

Hi, I am looking for advices on a feature I want to develop for Dr. Geo. The need takes place in a LAN, for example in a School computer lab. A teacher and students each run their own instance of Dr. Geo. I want the teacher to be able to share with her students some sketches. Then the students, from their Dr. Geo running instance, can browse and open the sketches shared by the teacher. The user scenario will be like this: - Teacher copies the sketches she wants to share with her students in her DrGeo.app/myShare folder. Then she activates the Dr. Geo share service (from the setting browser for example). - Students start their own instances of Dr. Geo. It automatically scans (in the background preferably) the LAN for any available LAN shares. When a student goes to File>open she can also browse and open the discovered shares. - Ideally students could also save their work on the teacher share. The constraints:Â there is no such things as fixed IP. So the scan is over a subnetwork range. Any advices, reference reading, traps to avoid? Thanks Hilaire -- Dr. Geo http://drgeo.eu

Pharo 7 - New Iceberg feedback
by Tim Mackinnon May 24, 2018

May 24, 2018

Hi - last night we managed to explore the new contribution process as well as the new iceberg ui at the U.K. Smalltalk meetup last night. Not many had seen it before so it was a good test run. As an initial comment - we need to invest a small amount of time to get the right docs in places you expect them as not doing so undoes a lot of good work - the Pharo main site that points to old contribution docs (and doesnât reference the new ones) must be updated ASAP to keep energy high (we almost lost a few folks last night by going down the wrong path - fortunately Cyril piped up on Discord for me - phew). Armed with the right steps it was straightforward - much easier than the older slices mechanism (that I never was comfortable with) - so HUGE thanks for that everyone! As we worked through it, the more git seasoned folks were confused why git status in a terminal wasnât really showing the same info as iceberg (Iâll put this in a separate thread to discuss, as itâs an interesting thought which Iâm sure has lively discussion). Anyway - the new UI does take some getting used to (personally I liked the compactness of the original Iceberg and its tabs), but when you understand what the different windows show you - I think it makes sense (and hopefully is more stable). We all missed having an obvious Diff mechanism - we later spotted that Commit does show this (Although possibly calling it âCommitâ¦â might make it more obvious that you have a chance to review changes and change your mind) - but knowing the size of your change and reviewing them without any danger of committing something is a useful feature (but maybe a 2.0 enhancement request?). One small tweak (which I would PR if I knew how to - would be to swap the status and branch columns in the Repository window to make the status clearer (the status gets lost as it sqashed against the normally much longer branch name). Its a simple change to #initializeRepositoryList but I guess Iceberg is in a different repository (and not in the instructions for contirbutions). We also noticed that if you try to use the âCreate Pull Requestâ menu item, you canât if you have 2FA enabled on Github (the recommended setting) as I guess that ssh protocol doesnât allow this with an ssh key? So I we should update the instructions to suggest either using the web ui - or - creating an app specific login (that doesnât use 2fa). - Iâll look at how to add that tweak and send a PR. On UDP broadcast
by Hilaire May 24, 2018

May 24, 2018

Hi, I try to figure out this matter. I am just new to this domain so excuse me for the obvious the errors. To broadcast an IP, this seems to work: | socket | socket := Socket newUDP. socket setOption: 'SO_BROADCAST' value: true. 10 timesRepeat: [ Â Â Â socket sendUDPData: '10.7.2.1'Â toHost: #[255 255 255 255] port: 9999. Â Â Â (Delay forSeconds: 1) wait. Â Â Â Â ]. socket closeAndDestroy. Then I can listen from the shell: with: nc -ulk 9999 Now for the listener part, I wrote something like: | socket data | socket := Socket newUDP. socket connectTo: NetNameResolver loopBackAddress port: 9999. socket waitForConnectionFor: 2. [data := socket receiveDataTimeout: 5. data crLog] ensure: [ socket closeAndDestroy] But I got an error when connecting the socket, the debugger message is: "InvalidSocketStatusException: Socket status must Unconnected before opening a new connection" So far I don't see understand this error. Port 9999 is not in use, and running again after this error the broadcast code does not lead to an error. Any idea? Thanks Hilaire -- Dr. Geo http://drgeo.eu

[Ann] Some new iceberg videos
by Guillermo Polito May 24, 2018

May 24, 2018

Hi all, This time (just before releasing a new version of iceberg) I wanted to share some videos with you. Feedback is welcome. !! How to contribute to Iceberg https://youtu.be/yGr5HvVWM0M This video shows how to contribute to iceberg. For this, you should update your iceberg installation and then just do a pull request. This means that you need to start by forking https://github.com/pharo-vcs/iceberg - Path 1: Clone and pull (easy) - Clone your fork - Checkout the latest development branch (e.g., dev-0.7) - Pull from pharo-vcs/iceberg This path does not always work, as this is kind of self-brain surgery. Iceberg is updating itself. If this does not work, go to path 2 - Path 2: Install from scratch (if Path 1 does not work) - Use the script in the README file to unload and reinstall iceberg - Make sure you use the latest development branch in the Metacello script (e.g., dev-0.7) - Clone your fork and checkout the development branch Once you have the correct version, you can load the tests by loading the development group of the baseline. !! Basic Branching and Merging https://youtu.be/c0IgIT2s6Js This video shows in a simple example how to branch, merge and checkout different commits. In this video we first create a new class with a method, then we create another branch and force a conflict. We resolve the conflict during merge. In the middle, bonus feature, we checked out a commit and stayed in Detached HEAD for a while ;) !! Loading a baseline from your repository https://youtu.be/brUHEOr-p_E This video shows how to load a baseline from Iceberg's UI. We clone an existing project, see it is "Not loaded" and use Metacello plugin to load the default group. Enjoy, Guille PS: Tomorrow I'll answer the threads about Iceberg that were going around here in the mailing list. I was running today.

GIFReadWriter and Animated GIFs
by Eric Gade May 24, 2018

May 24, 2018

Hello all, Please excuse the length of this email. A week or two ago I discovered that the GIF implementation in Pharo (and possibly Squeak?) is incomplete. This has two side effects: 1) Not all GIF data will load correctly; 2) There is for now no way to display animated GIFs. It looks like the corresponding classes have not been updated since the 90s. But fear not! I've been working on a solution, and need the community's feedback and advice. # The Problem with GIFs # One of the issues here is that GIF files can (and do) contain multiple images inside of them. The root header will supply things like a "screen size" in which these nested images should be displayed. That also means that each nested image does not have to have the same dimensions as the parent object -- in fact, most are offset somewhere inside of the "screen." Additionally, each nested image will contain information about how it should be handled when animating. This is a crucial point. In many cases images are just updates of a small area that should be applied to the previous image in the set. GIFs call this attribute the "disposal," and this information is contained in a packed byte. Both GIFReadWriter and AnimatedGIFReadWriter have intentionally skipped/ignored the bits/bytes that store and keep track of these things. GIFReadWriter on its own will only read the first Form and does not store information about disposal, offsets, etc. These classes are not reading all the information we need to display GIFs! # My Solution # The attached changes file includes some preliminary updates to the GIFReadWriter class. Now when each nested image is read, it will be loaded into a collection called "frames" as a (new -- see attached package file) AnimatedImageFrame. Instances of this new class will store the disposal symbol, offset, and form for each nested image in the file. I have also created an AnimatedImageMorph which reads AnimatedImageFrame objects and cycles them based on the disposal re-drawing rules. # Trying This Out # To try this out, first load the attached changes file and the ST file. You'll need a FileReference to a gif file, so when you have one execute the following: ```smalltalk file := "your gif filereference here" img := AnimatedImageMorph fromGIFReader: (AnimatedGIFReadWriter formsFromStream: file readStream). img openInWorld. ``` # Issues # Not all GIF images work. This has to do with my implementation of the disposal (redrawing) rules for each frame. I'm still experimenting. I believe AnimatedGIFReadWriter should be deprecated and all appropriate functionality should be put into GIFReadWriter. If you all agree, I will make several changes to GIFReadWriter that I think will be helpful / necessary. AnimatedImageMorph is also incomplete. I'm not sure if I should subclass ImageMorph for this or not. # Your Feedback # If you disagree with any point of this architecture, please let me know. Also if you come across GIFs that do not animate or display properly, send them my way please! -- Eric

[Ann] OSSubprocess 1.0.0
by Guillermo Polito May 24, 2018

May 24, 2018

Hi all, News from the OSSubprocess side. For those who do not know it, OSSubprocess is the library to call external processes from Pharo. These are the main points of this release. - 64bits support - Issues Working on both Pharo 6 and 7 - Issue #34: Adding tests to validate that the return code is correctly handled - Issue #27: Cleanup: remove OSSubprocess-Tests package - PR #26: Add stress tests This version works for Pharo >=6. Users of Pharo5 will need to stick with v0.2.5, because of non compatible changes in uFFI (required mostly for 64 bits). Additionally: - We moved the repository to pharo-contribution to remove pressure from Mariano for releases and integrations - We updated the configuration in the catalog - We decided to move to a 1.0.0 versioning schema because 0.* does look like the library is not stable and it actually is (We have been using it in pillar and iceberg for quite some time). You can load this version from the catalog or using with: Metacello new baseline: 'OSSubprocess'; repository: 'github://pharo-contributions/OSSubprocess:v1.0.0/repository'; load. Detailed changes log in - https://github.com/pharo-contributions/OSSubprocess/releases/tag/v1.0.0 - https://github.com/pharo-contributions/OSSubprocess/compare/v0.2.5...v1.0.0 If you have any issues (or PR!), we wait for your issue entry in https://github.com/pharo-contributions/OSSubprocess/issues Have a nice weekend, -- Guille Polito Research Engineer Centre de Recherche en Informatique, Signal et Automatique de Lille CRIStAL - UMR 9189 French National Center for Scientific Research - *http://www.cnrs.fr <http://www.cnrs.fr>* *Web:* *http://guillep.github.io* <http://guillep.github.io> *Phone: *+33 06 52 70 66 13

Why doesn't Pharo 7 Iceberg write changes to the git filesystem as you go?
by Tim Mackinnon May 23, 2018

May 23, 2018

Hi - when trying out the new Iceberg with a bunch of developers and explaining the challenges of integrating git and files into a smalltalk realm of the image - there was a lot of interest in how this works. When you clone - you obviously see a series of files (in Tonel - nice) that are then brought into your image. If you edit a file like Readme.md (using a markdown editor) you will notice that git status will show you that this file has changed. However if you then edit some methods - and then look in the file system - git status doesnât show these? This in retrospect possibly feels weird - or does it? Iâm not sure anymore - and was wondering if there was a specific reason behind not mirroring code changes back to the file system as they happen? When you branch in Pharo, a command line git status does show that change - so some things clearly are being mirrored, just not code (Which Iâm guess happens briefly when you click commit?). Iâm curious now to understand the tradeoffs. Tim p.s. it is very nice for small private projects, to use a git client on your phone - edit a method or two on the train, commit your changes and then see your CI build the results and deploy a new website by the time you get off⦠yes its not the rich smalltalk environment for bigger changes - but tiny stuff, its quite nice to fallback on the traditional way.

LibFFI/NB Cairo External Module Not Found debugging
by Peter Uhnák May 22, 2018

May 22, 2018

Hi, some Windows users are repeatedly running into Pharo failing to load Cairo library on Windows (see stack screenshot at the bottom). The problem is that I have no idea how to even start debugging this. Is there some documentation on how Pharo loads libraries via FFI on Windows that I can start digging into? Note that the library is definitely present, as this happens only occasionally -- it can be fixed by restarting PC. But I cannot reasonably ask users to restart just because Pharo decided it doesn't feel like loading a library. Any pointers / docs / ideas appreciated. Thanks, Peter

Showing Keyboard events as Pharo goes weird when using an RD client for OSX
by Tim Mackinnon May 18, 2018

May 18, 2018

Hi - Iâm wondering if anyone has any experience using Pharo in a Remote Desktop environment? Ive been experimenting with MacInCloud.com and running Pharo there - however Iâve noticed that while it appears to run (and it reasonably performant) after a few seconds/minutes (I canât quite work out what causes it) certain keeps stop working - most importantly the Enter key (but also Cmd-P etc). It looks like its dishing out some kind of tab key (its invisible in the playground - the cursor just jumps forward a few characters) but Iâm not sure, and I wondered if I could print out key codes in Pharo to maybe spot what it is. But keyboard handling is not something Iâve dug into - and Iâm looking for a few pointers (or maybe someone has seen this problem before and might be able to suggest a solution). As I said, It starts out ok but then suddenly swaps to this behaviour (which makes coding then impractical). Restating the RD client doesnât make a difference (and Iâve tried 2 different ones now). Other remote mac apps like Notes donât seem to be affected and I have to exit the image and come back in to correct it. (I havneât tried saving in between to see if it then preserves this behaviour). Ulimately I was hoping to have an easy portable Pharo environment to sneakily take on holiday via an iPad. The approach is to try and compile Pharo for iOS (I did it a long time ago, but it was a pain - whereas a remote server seemed like a neat solution). Tim Sent from my iPhone

Restoring a class via Epicea didn't recompile a reference?
by Tim Mackinnon May 17, 2018

May 17, 2018

Hi - I think I had this issue a long while back, but I just hit it again (desperately trying to get back into Pharo again)⦠I was trying out Willow - and had a method like this: initializeContainerView | behaviorDetails scopeSelection | behaviorDetails := IdentifiedWebView forDivNamed: 'behavior-details' containing: WPPagerDutyUserDetailsView new applying: [ :div :constants | â¦. Where I had a class reference to: WPPagerDutyUserDetailsView, I deleted that class thinking I didnât need it and then spotted the above method referenced it and so I brought it back via Epicea. However when I ran my Willow Application, my web page was showing an error message âError, ObsoleteClassWPPagerDutyUserDetailsView does not implementâ¦.â - essentially it seemed like this method was referencing the class I had deleted and not the one I had restored. When I went back to this method and simply reserved it, everything worked properly. I recall Marcus (at the time) mentioning that the Opal compiler was supposed to detect these kinds of changes and rebind things properly - but it seems that this isnât the case - or potentially restoring something from Epicea subverts this? I can raise a bug if its genuine - but Iâm just musing on this at the moment? Tim

Is there a tonel:// format for repos?
by Tim Mackinnon May 16, 2018

May 16, 2018

Hi - I converted my project to tonel, and am looking to hook it up to my gitlab pipeline, and for older projects I had a run.st <http://run.st/> script that did: Metacello new baseline: 'WillowPagerDuty'; repository: âfiletree://../src'; load. I get a not found error when I run that, is there a new repo type for tonel eg? Metacello new baseline: 'WillowPagerDuty'; repository: 'tonel://../src'; load. Or is this the PR Esteban was working on earlier this month so that filetree can support tonel? If so, it would be very good to get this support as it makes it much easier to write generic scripts to run in CI projects without having to reference branch names to build things (as its simply the source in you git directory that you want to build locally ) Tim

Morphic, Canvas, and Drawing Polygon Borders
by Eric Gade May 16, 2018

May 16, 2018

I am having some trouble accurately drawing polygons using Morphic and the various Canvas types. My task is to recreate the Mac OS Platinum style buttons, and do be as pixel-accurate as I can. For the basic button, this involves creating a rectangle whose corners are always fattened by 2px on each side, no matter the extent of the underlying morph: â I can achieve this kind of outline when drawing individual lines one at a time with a Canvas: ```smalltalk canvas := FormCanvas extent: 150@30. rect := Rectangle point: (0@0) point: (150@30). vertices := { (rect left)@(rect top + 2). (rect left + 2)@(rect top). (rect right - 3)@(rect top). (rect right - 1)@(rect top + 2). (rect right -1)@(rect bottom - 3). (rect right - 3)@(rect bottom -1). (rect left + 2)@(rect bottom - 1). (rect left)@(rect bottom - 3). "(rect left)@(rect top + 2)" }. canvas line: (vertices at: 1) to: (vertices at: 2) color: Color black; line: (vertices at: 2) to: (vertices at: 3) color: Color black; line: (vertices at: 3) to: (vertices at: 4) color: Color black; line: (vertices at: 4) to: (vertices at: 5) color: Color black; line: (vertices at: 5) to: (vertices at: 6) color: Color black; line: (vertices at: 6) to: (vertices at: 7) color: Color black; line: (vertices at: 7) to: (vertices at: 8) color: Color black; line: (vertices at: 8) to: (vertices at: 1) color: Color black. canvas form asMorph openInWindow. ``` Which gives me: â But using the native Polygon drawing features of Canvas yield a different, and incorrect, result: ```smalltalk canvas := FormCanvas extent: 150@30. rect := Rectangle point: (0@0) point: (150@30). vertices := { (rect left)@(rect top + 2). (rect left + 2)@(rect top). (rect right - 3)@(rect top). (rect right - 1)@(rect top + 2). (rect right -1)@(rect bottom - 3). (rect right - 3)@(rect bottom -1). (rect left + 2)@(rect bottom - 1). (rect left)@(rect bottom - 3). "(rect left)@(rect top + 2)" }. canvas drawPolygon: vertices fillStyle: Color transparent borderWidth: 1 borderColor: Color black. canvas form asMorph openInHand. ``` â Either this is some kind of limitation in BalloonCanvas/BalloonEngine (which "becomes" the canvas for polygon draw operations) or I am doing something terribly wrong. Ideally I can trace this shape as a border, since I'll need to trace yet more additional borders around it (like the "default" button in Platinum, which has a fat complex border). Borders are already kind of complicated, so any help you all can provide would be much appreciated. FYI this same behavior is present in Squeak. -- Eric

How does iceberg handle caching of packages with different versions?
by Tim Mackinnon May 15, 2018

May 15, 2018

Hi - while Iâve been trying to troubleshoot my tonel build woes - I noticed something that might be a potential problem with baselines not loading the correctly specified version. I was having no luck with GitHub:/repo references (see other thread on this), eg: spec baseline: 'WillowBootstrap' with: [ spec repository: 'github://ba-st/Willow-Bootstrap:v8/source'; loads: #('Deployment') ]; import: 'WillowBootstrap'. So I tried using https equivalents like this: spec baseline: 'WillowBootstrap' with: [ spec repository: 'https://github.com/ba-st/Willow-Bootstrap/tree/v8.0.2/source'; loads: #('Deployment') ]; import: 'WillowBootstrap'. But then I wasnât sure if the newer version of the repository was what I was supposed to use and so I altered my spec to use /v8 (not v8.0.2) spec baseline: 'WillowBootstrap' with: [ spec repository: 'https://github.com/ba-st/Willow-Bootstrap/tree/v8/source'; loads: #('Deployment') ]; import: 'WillowBootstrap'. However when I was looking at the log files of errors, I noticed that when I downgraded my spec to v8 and reran my CI on a fresh image the error message still referenced v8.0.2 . As this was a run on my CI (which is preserving the pharo-cache directory between runs) this looked a lot to me like Iceberg/Metacello is not taking into account version numbers or repo urls when loading things from the file cache? When I blew away the pharo-cache and reran it - it then correctly showed me errors referencing v8 again. Is this a known problem? Tim

Pharo70 session start and silent failures
by Holger Freyther May 15, 2018

May 15, 2018

I am facing a problem with the new SessionManager>>#snapshot:andQuit: code. I have had plenty Pharo70 images that didn't restore anymore as the code is waiting for the "wait" semaphore. For sure it is something my code is doing but could anyone think of ways to make it more robust and handle failures more gracefully? My main concerns are: * When the failure becomes noticeable it is too late. :( * It fails silently. Maybe WorkingSession>>#runStartup: shouldn't rely on the UIManager doing the right thing (before the UI was fully initialized?) * Debugging is hard, there is no indication of why it broke, and getting to the situation of breakage takes a bit of time (installing the baseline..). holger
