Hi guys, I saw the interest in GUI lately and today I come across this really well researched master thesis paper that can put some light on how good we can perform in the GUI spectrum in terms of practicality, expressivity and productivity Introduction Even though OOP was born with the SIMULA programming language in the 1960s [15], it was Smalltalk that coupled GUI development with the OOP paradigm [25]. Smalltalkâs inventor Alan Kay was inspired by SIMULA, among other influences, to create a new language for graphics-oriented applications leveraging the OOP paradigm â and the rest is history [24]. Ever since Smalltalk successfully showed the promise of OOP for GUI development a great deal of subsequent OOP languages and, particularly, object-oriented GUI toolkits came into existence and eventually into the mainstream. Nearly all mainstream programming languages today directly support the OOP paradigm and there is hardly any widely used GUI toolkit that does not use OOP. recover lost changes

To whom can answer me Working with Pharo 3.0 I noticed for a while that I could not recover class definitions (do it's) from the "Recent Changes". I also lost class comments on file-out / file-in . For the second problem I made the following test: 1. take a fresh Pharo 3.0 image (bundle for Mac OSX from Aug 29, 2014) 2. create MyClass with a class method and a comment. 3. file-out MyClass 4. remove MyClass on remove of MyClass I get an exception: https://www.dropbox.com/s/unq89t84tq7r60b/removeClass.tiff?dl=0 5. file-in MyClass The class is there - no error But: With the same exception in other images the comment is missing after file-in. Tide does not load via Workspace: #UHE >> FileDoesNotExist

Hi, I try to follow the following step by step: .../Tide/tide-doc-master/documentation.pier.html in step 1.3.1. |Metacellonew configuration:'Tide'; version:#development; repository:'http://www.smalltalkhub.com/mc/Pharo/MetaRepoForPharo30/main'; load. it starts loading until: | ZnClient new url: url; downloadTo: outputFileName. url = 'https://github.com/tide-framework/tide/zipball/master' outputFileName= '/tmp/github-tideframeworktidemaster.zip' I get the following in the FileDoesNotExist in the method: FileHandle>>streamError reference exists ifFalse: [FileDoesNotExist signalWith: reference]. self error: 'Unable to open file ' , reference printString Please can you tell me what I miss .. my assumption was, that the output file would be created during loading. Atomic is game where you have to build chemical molecules using given atoms. The goal is to solve a level with as few moves as possible. The level is solved when the new molecule has the same structure as shown by the preview molecule (on the top right). In the higher levels, some tactical skill will be neccessary for solving the puzzle. It has been originally implemented by Gustavo Rafael Pistoia. (ConfigurationOfAtomic project version: '1.0') load AtomicGame browse to browse the main class AtomicGame new openInWorld to play :) Works at least in Pharo 40.

Running Pharo on Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS 64-bit

Hi, It seems some people are having trouble getting Pharo to work on Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS 64-bit. Here is one way to make things work. Pharo (the VM) is a 32-bit executable dynamically linked to a number of libraries, each of which has to be present in its 32-bit variant in order to run Pharo and/or to use all features. On a clean, stock, fully updated Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS 64-bit, do the following (the X11, GL and asound libraries are not needed when you run headless on a server): $ sudo apt-get install curl libc6:i386 libssl1.0.0:i386 libX11.6:i386 libGL.1:i386 libasound2:i386 $ curl get.pharo.org/40+vm | bash $ ./pharo Pharo.image eval "ZnClient new get: 'https://google.com'" $ ./pharo-ui Pharo.image HTH, Sven PS: <Pro tip> You can use ldd to check if all dependencies of the VM and its plugins in the pharo-vm directory are satisfied -- Sven Van Caekenberghe Proudly supporting Pharo http://pharo.org http://association.pharo.org http://consortium.pharo.org

voyage and couchDB

Hi there, a few days ago somebody showed me Pharo with Voyage and MongoDB. I must say I was impressed by how easy this all seemed to be, and how far we got in just two hours of trying stuff. I was thinking about using CouchDB as a storage medium for larger files before I saw Voyage an Mongo in action. And I am still not usure if Mongo would fit as well as CouchDB would. As far as I understand, Esteban wa/is pretty sure Voyage would fit very well with other NoSQL DBs than Mongo. But I am not so sure abot it. AFAIU, part of Voyage's greatness relies on Mongo's nice query facility, which is not present in Couch. Also, as I understand it, the concept of Collections (not Smalltalk collections, but the named lists -maybe kind of db slices - in Mongo) is not present in Couch. So my question is whether anybody has tried to marry Voyage with Couch? Any thoughts or ideas? Joachim

Hi Cam Interesting. The brain-dead-sample is a bit difficult to get started with. Would you care to talk a bit more about how to do something simple with it? An addressbook, with people having addresses and phone numbers might be an easy to use example. Cheers, Stephan

Writing a Login Dialog using Spec in 3 methods

So, how hard would it be for a normal user like me, who knows little about the Pharo UI or Spec, to write a plain, simple Login dialog ? It turns out it only takes 3 methods and some boilerplate code that is mostly auto generated. 0.
