So I decided to bite the bullet and start working on Morpheas, which is part of my project Ephestos ( a visual coding enviroment for graphics , music and sound) . Basically Morpheas will be a port of Morphic to OpenGL , probably simplified. So I started learning OpenGL ES 2 , because I was told that basically its possible to write code for both opengl es2 and opengl 3.1 without any major diffirence. And because opengl es 2 is what both Android and iOS use , I started considering what other issues besides opengl i have to handle. For now I am not so much interested on iOS because Apple does not allow for apps that can generate other apps and because Ephestos will be just an extension of pharo its most likely it will get rejected. So I decided to stick with Android for now.Â So the question is how do I use Pharo on Android. I know that CogVM can run on Android and that jenkins has builds for it , my problem is the FFI. I am going to need an FFI to use OpenGL ES , unless I could make Morpheas a pharo plugin which I guess that could work too. But I very beginner with all this and I want your advice on the subject. I assume Nativeboost wont work on an Android device. Two questions about Smalltalk language design

Hello Smalltalkers, I was interacting the other day with an user in a Scala mailing list, and he had some questions about Smalltalk. From his FP (functional programming) point of view there were some things that looked strange. I tried to reply to the best of my ability, but still I don't really know the background for these design decisions. So I come to you, real experts, hoping for some answers. The questions were: 1) Why do ST methods return "self" if nothing is explicitly returned? [Pharo-Users] FFI question. How read external byte* to image Form?

Hello. My application works extensively with png images. So Image based PNGReadWriter speed not enough for me. I have C library dll which has function "byte* readPNG(filename)". It returns buffer (pointer address) with same structure as Form Bitmap has. I use FFI to call this function. And I have very naive converter of returned buffer to Form: buffer := self primReadImageBytesFrom: imagePath. buffer getHandle asInteger == 0 ifTrue: [self error: 'bad image: ', imagePath ]. form := Form extent: width @ height depth: 32. x:= 0. y:=0. [y <= height ] whileTrue: [ x :=0. [x <= width] whileTrue: [ offset := x * 4 + (y * width * 4) + 1 + 8. value := buffer getHandle integerAt: offset size: 4 signed: false. form pixelValueAt: x@y put: value. x := x + 1. ]. y := y + 1. ]. ^form It's work and it is improve that buffer format similar to Form bits format. But such algorithm very slow. So my question is: How efficiently convert external byte array from FFI call to internal ByteArray (Bitmap, Form). I know about BitBlt class and blt := (BitBlt current toForm: f) sourceForm: source. blt combinationRule: Form over. "store" blt sourceX: 0; sourceY: 0; height: height; width: width. blt destX: 0; destY: 0. blt copyBits. And it works very fast. I try create source Form by source := Form extent: width@height depth: 32. source bits: buffer getHandle But BitBlt raise error for such form. #copyBits primitive failed and method execution continue with attempt to unhibernate given forms. Any ideas?

How to try out XTreams

Hi guys - I've been meaning to learn how to use XTreams and so I wanted to have a play in Pharo - however I am confused about how best to load it? I want to stick to a stable image - so I downloaded the 1.4 summer edition from the website, and then the XTreams project page seemed to point me to Squeak source and the install instructions seem quite old? As in there are Gofer instructions which I'm not convinced load the most up to date code. If I try and load a later mcz file it starts complaining about unsatisfied pre-requisites? I thought all this loading stuff was now sorted with metacello - but I don't see any references to this anywhere? Actually in typing this - it occurs to me that there was a welcome screen somewhere in Pharo that described how to load stuff so I've just gone and checked and found the MetacelloConfigurationBrowser - and now noticed there is an untrusted entry for XTreams. Is this how I'm suppposed to load it? If it is - is there any way of getting the Squeak source instructions updated, or even better the XTreams project page to give better directions (as this would have saved me time). Adding OAuth & OpenID support to Pharo

Hello, Now that we have added Websocket support to Zinc, I would like to move forward and add OAuth & OpenID. Sven Van Caekenberghe, and Jan van de Sandt, have put together a proposal, which my company would like to fund. If anyone feels that they would benefit from this - commercially - and would be happy to make a contribution to the development costs, please shoot me an email. Browsing inherited methods in Nautilus

Is it possible to browse inherited methods in Nautilus without going back the hierarchy ? I want the class to display all its methods including the ones that it inherits from super classes.

Is 'Smalltalk Best Practice Patterns' by Kent Beck still relevant to pharo?

SubscriptOutOfBounds using ZnClient in Pharo 1.4

Hi list, I'm using Pharo1.4 Latest update: #14457 with CogVM 4.0.0 from 7/2012. The below http get used to work with previous versions of Zinc components, but it doesn't work anymore. I need to retrieve a XML returned by the following URL: http://eutils.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/eutils/efetch.fcgi?db=nuccore&retmode… (the URL is ok, pasting in Firefox retrieves the XML, the service is described here http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK25500/) but doing ZnClient new get: ' http://eutils.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/eutils/efetch.fcgi?db=nuccore&retmode… '. answer: SubscriptOutOfBounds: 4097 I've tried with a clean image and it fails too. Any help or fix out there? I'm willing to try other HTTP clients too. HernÃ¡n
