Package browser?

I am attempting to do the Pharo by Example book, but a package browser (which is used in the examples) is not in the 1.1.1 or 1.2 image. Should I still use categories? If I create a package in Monticello browser I am not able to add classes or anything (not as far as I could see). Just starting out using Pharo, so apologies if these questions are already answered elsewhere.

Adding instance variables to existing classes in Monticello

Hi I have modified an existing class in the Smalltalk image and added an instance variable to it. I would like to record this change -- added this new instance variable -- in Monticello; that way my team can also pull in the changes and have it work. This existing class is outside of my Monticello package. Is this possible? Now we were discussing with Doru about how we as community could coordinate and structure ourselves better to create more energy. Analysis of the current situation: Right now we have individuals doing great projects, sometimes we have a group of people but this is often not visible. Now often happens a bit in ad-hoc way. Because someone ask something, then somebody replies and we integrate the replies. Image confusion

Hi, newbie Smalltalker here. Have been playing with Pharo for a couple of weeks - loving it and hating it at the same time! :) So I',m on WinXP and have Pharo in "C:\Pharo 1.2.1 Release". I had thought I'd worked out worked out dragging an image file onto the exe loaded it that image (it seems to work in the main directory with Pharo.exe ... and assumed that would work with cog vm too. So I copied an image into the cog directory "C:\Pharo 1.2.1 Release\cogvm" and dragged it onto PharoCog.exe and have been happily working away. Now I realise looking at modification dates that the image it is actually using is "C:\Pharo 1.2.1 Release\pharo.image" - and confirmed that by actually noticing the window header which says "PharoCog! (C:\Pharo 1.2.1 Relase\pharo.image)" I've filed out my stuff and am going to start again. So, which VM should I be using, and if its cog .. how should I manage images. Thanks Jonathan.

invalid utf8 input detected

I'm not sure what to expect with UTF-8 encoding in Pharo. Can someone point me to some docs or past discussion? I have tried this today in pharo 1.3: 1 - in a workspace: cnString := ''. 2 - Now I go to Firefox and copy 4 simplified Chinese characters and try to paste this in between the quotes of the smalltalk string in the workspace. 3 - the paste operation throws "Error: Invalid utf8 input detected" The web page I'm copying from is utf-8 encoded. I can copy text from this page and paste into vim or gEdit just fine. The error is thrown by UTF8TextConvertor>>errorMalformedInput I would provide a stack trace...but being new to pharo, I'm not sure how to grab such a report without doing a screen capture. thanks, Jon

Announcer question

Hi, in the pharo book, morphs unsubscribe to an announcer in delete for garbage-collection, but what do i do, when a morph is not explicitely deleted, but its owner? i have mypanelmorph that subscribes to an announcer. it has a tabgroupmorph as its owner, which has a panelmorph as its owner, which has a systemwindow as its owner, which has a model, that knows absolutely nothing about mypanelmorph, but occasionally deletes panelmorph. is there a method in mypanelmorph, where i could put the unsubscription in, that would be called, when panelmorph will be deleted? werner

Using SqueakSource / Metacello "offline"

Hi there, I need to load packages from SqueakSource into an image that sits on a machine behind a proxy that won't let me download from Squeaksource. I can, however, download packages using the Browser. The problem for me is that ConfigurationOfSeaside30, for example, requires a lot of packages to be loaded first. So I know I can donload all the .mcz files from Squeaksource and copy them to my local PackageCache, but I am looking for a way to find out which ones I need. Is manually extracting the info from the ConfigurationOfSeaside30 class the only way to do that? And how would I go about using ConfigurationOfSeaside30 to use my package cache instead of the online repositories? Any ideas? install system fonts on linux

In pharo 1.1, in the settings manager, I can "Update fonts from system" and have access to all/most ubuntu fonts. This works on Ubuntu 10.04 and Mint 10 (ubuntu 10.10). With pharo 1.2.1 and 1.3, I get nothing. I'm left with DejuVu and Accuny. Does anyone know a solution for this? thanks, Jon

Setting values using reflection

I've been playing with smalltalk casually now, for months and really like it. But I"m clearly still a newb. I've reached the point in a small project where I want to set the values on my object based on the values that are in a dictionary. The dictionary is filled with a set of keys that represent attributes on the object. So for a simple example, imagine I have an object which has accessors for 'title' and 'title:'. I want to iterate across the set of keys, being certain that each key is a valid msg to send to myOBject. The send the object the message with the value from the dictionary. Now, I understand that I can do: myObject perform: 'title' asSymbol. and use that as a way to message myObject with the selector 'title' As I understand it this is equivalent to getting the value with: myObject title What I've looked for an been unable to find is how to set the value. What is the equivalent to: myOBject title: 'A new title'. using perform? Thank you for your help. Hi List: I've looked at the source code for DateAndTime and TimeStamp but I do not understand it. | t1 t2 | t1 := TimeStamp now. (Delay forMilliseconds: 500 ) wait. t2 := TimeStamp now. (t2 - t1) nanoSeconds. ---> 0 DateAndTime>>clockPrecision says 1 nanosecond. Thanks in advance!

Hi, in a Configuration i have this baseline: baseline10: spec <version: '1.0-baseline'> spec for: #'common' do: [ spec blessing: #'baseline'. spec project: 'Nile' with: [ spec className: 'ConfigurationOfNile'; versionString: #bleedingEdge; loads: #('Core Tests' ); repository: 'http://www.squeaksource.com/MetacelloRepository' ]. spec repository: '/home/user/PharoFiles/package-cache'. spec package: 'Pattern' with: [spec requires: 'Nile']; package: 'Pattern-Tests' with: [spec requires: 'Pattern'.] ]. in the method version10 i have this: spec package: 'Pattern' with: 'Pattern-WernerKassens.14'; now i remove the package 'Pattern' and do a load with the configuration. no complaints by the configuration. but there is no package 'Pattern' visible in the browser. i open the monticello browser and there is a dirty package 'Pattern'. i open a browser on this package via the monticello browser and 'Pattern' is completely empty. but in the monticello browser the package shows the repository /home/user/PharoFiles/package-cache exactly as written in the baseline. i open that repository and of course can load 'Pattern' as expected . where did i go wrong? werner

Hi list, I'd love to have something like: #(#a #b) combinationsWith: #('one' 'two' 'three') collect: [:i :j | i , ' matches ' , j asString] That returns the collection: #('a matches one' 'a matches two' 'a matches three' 'b matches one' 'b matches two' 'b matches three') In other words, is there some kind of vectorial-product-like method for collections in Smalltalk? detecting and reacting to a race condition/infinite loop

Is there a way to detect when an image has entered an infinite loop? If so could I then halt it, save the image, and reboot from a previously known good configuration automatically? I have a site with a weird bug on a remote server that has become annoying to debug because when the infinite loop occurs the RFB process becomes unresponsive. Or maybe I should stop running headless temporarily and use X forwarding through SSH. Anyways, is there a way to detect an infinite loop an react to it? Thanks Paul

Hapao installation

Hello, I tried to download Hapao in Pharo 1.2.2 with the code in the Hapao website : Gofer new squeaksource: 'Spy'; package: 'ConfigurationOfSpy'; load. (Smalltalk at: #ConfigurationOfSpy) perform: #loadDefault When I load the packages, there is a dependency with SubscriptionRegistry package, what is this package ? Finally, when I want to run Hapao in the Pharo menu, there is the following message: MessageNotUnderstood: PluggableDialogWindow>>beResizeable. In fact this message does not exist in the system, is it because of SubscriptionRegistry package isn't load ? Or because I did something wrong ? Thanks for answers. Romain

Pharo showcase demos?

Question: what do you show to other people when you want to demo Pharo/Smalltalk? in 15 minutes / 30 minutes / 1 hour Do you have a typical example? Do you use a kata? Or a full blown application? What tools do you show? I'm looking for successful recipes/topos to present Pharo in a technical context: the premice is that people are interested by Pharo, but they will not be convinced by a toy case and a basic demo of tools. A TDD demo would be more efficient I guess. That would be cool to have a list of such showcases depending on the context (duration of demo, technical level of people, interest...) -- Simon Denier

Fuel: Could not find a serializer with id=0

I've serialized an object with Fuel and can't get it back in another image: Could not find a serializer with id=0 in FLCluster class>>forId: The instance variable 'serializersById' contains a dictionary with other integers than 0 for its keys (1, 2, 3, 4, 7, etc). Is it a known problem, something I'm doing wrong? Maybe because I've serialized an object from Pharo 1.2 to 1.3? Cheers, Fa

Hi all, i would like to know what do you when your image freezee?. how do you find the problem? it's easy to kill the process and start again but in this case i really want to know what's going on Right now, im using Pharo image: Pharo1.3#13280 Virtual machine used: Squeak4.1 of 17 April 2010 [latest update: #9957] Platform Name: unix I've read the vm's options but i couldn't find something useful. what should i do? thanks in advance
