[ANN] CalipeL: a benchmarking tool for Smalltalk/X and Pharo
by Jan Vrany Nov. 5, 2015

Nov. 5, 2015

Hi there, After more than 2 years of (time-to-time) development and about that much time of use, I'd like to announce CalipeL, a tool for benchmarking and monitoring performance regressions. The basic ideas that drove the development: * Benchmarking and (especially) interpreting benchmark results  is always a monkey business. The tool should produce raw numbers,  letting the user to use whichever statistics she need to make up  (desired) results. * Benchmark results should be kept and managed at a single place so  one can view and retrieve all past benchmark results pretty much  the same way as one can view and retrieve past versions of  the software from a source code management tool. Features: - simple - creating a benchmark is as simple as writing a method  in a class - flexible - a special set-up and/or warm-up routines could be  specified at benchmark-level as well as set of parameters  to allow fine-grained measurements under different conditions - batch runner - contains a batch runner allowing one to run  benchmarks from a command line or at CI servers such as Jenkins. - web - comes with simple web interface to gather and process  benchmark results. However, the web application would deserve  some more work. Repository:  https://bitbucket.org/janvrany/jv-calipel  http://smalltalkhub.com/#!/~JanVrany/CalipeL-S (read-only export  from the above and Pharo-specific code) More information:  https://bitbucket.org/janvrany/jv-calipel/wiki/Home I have been using CalipeL for benchmarking and keeping track of performance of Smalltalk/X VM, STX:LIBJAVA, a PetitParser compiler and other code I was working over the time. Finally, I'd like to thank to Marcel Hlopko for his work on the web application and Jan Kurs for his comments. I hope some of you may find it useful. If you have any comments or questions, do not hesitate and let me know! Regards, Jan

[ANN] QuickAccess for Pharo 5
by Torsten Bergmann Nov. 5, 2015

Nov. 5, 2015

Hi, I quickly wrote yet another small tool to work faster with Pharo. I call it "QuickAccess" - it's some kind of "ScriptManager 2.0" allowing you to quickly access actions (defined as code scripts) via Spotter, Menu, Button, etc. You can load it from Spotter/Catalog in Pharo 5.0 beta. The following video demonstrates how to use it: http://youtu.be/j-dTp6i_P3s The defined structure including the scripts can be exported to a file and send around. So far it is "complete" for my own requirements - if you feel something is missing you can contribute and help moving it forward. The repo is at http://www.smalltalkhub.com/#!/~TorstenBergmann/QuickAccess Contact me with your STHub account if you need access. The tool has some similarities with Playground/script cache, but GT tools lack the category structuring for scripts that you find in QuickAccess. It might be an inspiration for a future unified script management solution in Playground. Have fun! Bye T.

Re: [Pharo-dev] [Vm-dev] hello

Hi Sebastián, and welcome! Forgive me for not replying earlier. One thing is to consider multiple approaches. My friend Maurice Rabb (in the cc line) did a concurrent VM for a smalltalk-like language a few years ago now and he used something more akin to compare-and-swap. e.g. var ?= value := expr would set var to expire if it held the value var and answer true, otherwise it would not change the value of var and answer false. Talk also to Igor Stasenko (also in the cc line) who has thought a lot about this and has written a prototype image-level scheduler based on (IIRC) a couple of different atomic operators. Another thing to think about is goals. Making it convenient to implement lock-free data structures such as a lock-free thread-safe dictionary would be very good. Make sure you look at Cliff Click's work, e.g. at Azul such as A Lock-Free, Wait-Free Hash Table <https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CB4QFj…>. Google cliff click azul lock-free data structures <https://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=cliff+click+azul+lock-…> . Finally, decide where you want to discuss this. My preference is for you to at least include vm-dev, since this is definitely to do with the byte code set and the VM. But the data structure piece and the use is more generally useful. So I see no problem including vm-dev, pharos-dev and the general purpose squeak list. The more the merrier. A couple of questions: How long will your work with Gabriela last? Is this a master's project or a PhD or...? Good luck! _,,,^..^,,,_ best, Eliot
